“Batam holiday experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2012

Stayed at this Hotel for one night on Vesak Day, Sat 5 May 2012, for the 2nd time.
My rating of the hotel are as follows :-

LOCATION : very strategic and centralised. About 200 metres to Nagoya Hill Shopping Centre where Matahari is located. You can get all your office clothes, ties, socks and shoes here.
Transport : It cost you Rp to get a taxi from the new Harbour Bay. But you must take the taxi outside the carpark where the check counter is located. Inside the carpark the taxi driver will ask for Rp 45,000. The Hotel is located along the main road and it is very convenient to get a cab. Do not take the cab from the lobby.
FOOD : Eating places are spread all round the hotel. There are 3 - 4 nasi Padang shops around. However, you need to walk and ask around to find them. One Nasi Padang shop is located just across the hotel lobby. They serve original Padang dishes ( rice and gravies at your order ) and lunch for 4 is around Rp 70 - 80,000 - much cheaper than in Jakarta or Bandung.
FACILITIES : There is a ladies hair saloon outside the hotel lobby. A hair cut cost us Rp 55,000. If you do a special treatment and head massage it would be RP 75,000 ( inclusive of the haircut ). Alot of spas, massage places and pubs around Nagoya Hill. If you walk a short distance away to the right side and towards the wet market area, there are plenty of shops including coffee shops catering Chinese food, More spa and pubs can be found here. But it is a bit dark at night.
HOTEL : The hotel is old but the rooms are newly renovated. Hovever, all the wooden furniture and panels have gone and new appealing designed laminated surfaces have been replaced for the beds and furnitures. However, there is a lingering smell of cigarettes in the room.
But somehow the hotel is always full and be prepared to be turned away if you did not book in advance. The price includes free breakfast for two. The spread is more than adequate - complete with bread and pastries and also the egg station. For breakfast , I had sharksfin soup ( look alike ), sweet sour fish, oregano fresh loaf ( sliced your own share ) and spead with peanut butter and honey with some keropok belinjau ( Indonesian seed crackers). You can wash it down with hot beverage or chilled orange juice.
STAFF : They are always always smiling and attentive to your needs.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a window so that you see the sunlight.

“Surprise Surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2012

Having been to Batam several times and staying at the same hotels, I recently decided to check into Formosa hotel based on the positive reviews in here and as it also fitted my expectation of being within walking distance to Nagoya Hill.

The hotel lobby was simple and pleasant enough. Checking in was a breeze as I was the only one and the staff there are friendly and helpful. Pretty good first impression.

Stepping into their elevator, which was quite small, I was worried if the rooms will suit my expectations.
Arriving at my level, the door opened to reveal a magnificent sight. Seriously, I did not expect the place to look so nice. It was a little distance from the elevator to the room, good thing they arranged a staff to lead our way.

Door opened and I was greeted by a more than expected, pleasant Deluxe twin room. Looked around the room and decided that the hotel was beyond my expectations and definitely a good choice. The room was simple and nicely designed. Bed is clean and comfortable, does not cause itchiness. However, there was a strange smell in the room, probably from the air-conditioning unit. That dissipated quickly enough, or perhaps my senses got used to it, I don’t know. There was also no window in the room though it was not a problem for me. Only thing was that the toilet does not have a spray hose which most hotels provide for nowadays.

I am not able to comment on the breakfast nor the Vienna Restaurant located at the lobby, as I did not managed to wake up in time for it, nor did I dined in during my stay.

All in all, I had a very pleasant experience with Formosa Hotel and it is likely for me to return in future.

“Well kept hotel within the city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2011 via mobile

It's kinda weird for a batam hotel to charge using Singapore dollars. Rooms are very big and accomodating. There's even security guards patrolling the hotel which makes it safe from unwanted guests. Spa, karaoke, fitness club (very small with a few machines available) and even a hair salon located within the hotel. Macdonald's and some 24hours minimart nearby for the late night munchies.. Overall enjoyable.

“OK”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2011

Stayed for 1 night with a group of friends. The location of the hotel is great as it is only a short walk to Nagoya Hill Mall. The surrounding area is very lively as you are not short of food & entertainment. The room in general was functional and the facilities adequate. Love the mirror facing the bed.

My only suggestion is that the management might want to consider adding more channels to the room tv as it can get very bored seeing the same channel all the time.

“Definitely a place I’d return to”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2011

I stayed in the Executive Suite room, and to my opinion, everything looked okay.
I had and LCD TV by the bed, and an old one in the living room (yup, there are 2 TVs).
The carpet was new, also some of the furniture. The bed was okay, but the pillow was superb.
When I come down to the restaurant (it was called “Vienna Restaurant” by the way) it came to my attention that they are still in major renovation.
I tried some Chinese food menu in the restaurant, and surprised that the taste of the food was actually pretty good. And they gave me a cup of soup as an appetizer, fruits and cakes as desert, closed by a hot cup of coffee (all these are provided as compliments a.k.a “free”)
Last, but not least, this hotel is located right in the heart of Nagoya. So you can pretty much have a good access to entertainment or shopping spot. All in all, a good place to stay
