“A must stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2014

The hotel ground is as beautiful as in any pictures. Not sure if it's always like that, or if it's because it was during a rainy season.
We were there during weekdays, nice and quiet, only business travelers and no little kids running around. :-)
Restaurants are of good quality, although the food came a bit slow. Buffet breakfast was amazing.
We stayed in a Suite, perfect setting, although would've appreciated getting one with terrace. When checked with Front Desk, they told us all rooms with terraces were taken, but watching them, that wasn't true.
Also, there were other information that could've been relayed better to us at check-in. Otherwise, the rest of the staff was friendly.
Gym was a bit run down.

I had anticipated something special, but the result fell short.
Certainly the building, gardens and staff are of a high standard; yet the room let me down.
The furniture had holes in the fabric, the towels were frayed, the carpet had not been vacuumed properly and the bathroom floor also had also not been properly cleaned.
The mini bar fridge could not be plugged into the electricity because the plug was not compatible with the power sockets…so too the electric kettle for making coffee. Some other power point were not properly attached to the walls.
Other than that, the room was large and comfortable.
The menus in the Indigo restaurant were torn and had scribbles all over them.
This hotel is in need of a renovation and I suggest that the management who takes care of the detail.

At the end of our holiday through Java and Bali we stayed here 1 night before heading back home. What a pleasant surprise. The hotel is an old building but very well maintained.
The staff is very polite and speaks a decent level of English.
Our room was beautifully decorated with old furniture and had a bath and separate shower (with brass fittings loved it!). Bed was very comfortable.
The breakfast was by far the best we had in Java, it's a buffet and you will find everything you could want and whish for.
Definitely you should stay here if you are in Surabaya.

Room Tip: Try a deluxe standard room, the value for money is great!

Stayed here at end of December with family at the start of an East Java tour. A building with a lot of history: built in Dutch colonial period by the son of the constructor of the Singapore Raffles hotel.

Rooms are large and nicely decorated in 1910s-20s style. Bed is very comfortable, and hotel facilities like Spa, swimming pool and gym are all of very good quality. Located in walking distance of major shopping mall.

Only minor points are the food quality for dinner (nothing special) and hotel service was not entirely what I expected from this kind of heritage hotel. Still highly recommended when you plan a trip to Surabaya.

Room Tip: Massages have to be booked well in advance during the weekend. very popular.

Stayed here while lecturing at the university airlanga (with Dutch foundation). Having traveled a lot in Indonesia this is one of the most special ones. A former colonial hotel! The entourage looks like it hasn't changed over the years. Rooms are clean and breathing ancient times. Breakfast buffet is an extensive collections of a variety of world dishes. An quite place in a hectic city. Pool is also great. Can highly recommend this place........ Not expensive!

The hotel has beautiful grounds, but the quality of the rooms seemed to vary quite a bit. We were in a ground floor room with a beautiful balcony view of the inner courtyard, some friends were in upstairs rooms that were not the twin beds that they had requested. However, the historic value was really majestic. We arranged a driver through the hotel for a sunrise trip up Mount Bromo. As a snobbish American, I felt that was a bit overrated after the beauty of the Rockies. With 100s of people with cameras jammed in one spot, the crowd dampens the experience a bit, especially after you may feel a bit crabby from pretty much staying up all night. I realize this has nothing to do with the hotel, but just a travel tip as the hotel provides access to drivers who will arrange a package deal to visit Bromo. Be sure to haggle on the price--it still seemed a bit pricy--once again--to an American who goes to beautiful mountain camp grounds without having to pay for a guide service.

The breakfast is extensive! The pool is beautiful--however it had been rented for an event so our time there was restricted a bit.
