My family and I (4 adults + 2 kids of 6 & 8 years old) stayed here for 4 days 3 nights on 14th - 17th Dec 2009.
The registration is a bit frustrating as I've been waiting for about 1 hour as my booking through airasia seems not registered in their system. We have to sit around the lobby with a small chairs as we are not allowed to sit at the coffee shop. The waiter shoo my family members, so this consider uncomfortable experience. Luckily the frontoffice staff apologise & give us orange juice as a compliment. The aplogise & compliment at least reduce our frustration.
Everywhere at the hotel shows that there's a free wifi in all rooms but when I ask for the access code, the front office said I've to pay Rp100,000 per day for internet access. This is also frustrating as I can't update my work & communicate to my staffs & freelancers through email unless I pay for the EXPENSIVE FREE wifi! In fact, I'm paying RM980 (Rp 2.7 Million) for 3 nights for the 2 rooms.
It;s a nice hotel considering that Ibis is a 3 star hotel. Our rooms were cleaned every day, towel and toilettries were changed daily. Their breakfast was good. the hotel has good facility eg fitness centre etc (but we didn't use it as we're only at the hotel for sleeping as most of our time spent outside the hotel). The jembatan merah plaza is just 3 minutes walking distance across the hotel. For local food, just about 5 minutes walking distance from the hotel. Taxi to other malls eg Tunjungan Plaza, Surabaya Plaza, WTC etc just about Rp 15k to Rp30K from the hotel. The hotel also provide free shuttle to tunjungan plaza but we didn't use it as we have our own schedule for sightseeings, amusement & shopping & don't want to waste our time simply to use the free shuttle.
They also offer spa and all of us had it since it was cheaper. we take the 3 hours treatment for only Rp325,000 per head (their list price but we get 5% discount for 4 of us). That's 1/3 the cost in Kuala Lumpur!
For shoppers, we recommend to go to Pasar Turi & jembatan merah (various locals products) & masjid ampel (for muslim products). At sidoarjo, there's a tas products (begs, wallets, jackets etc). Tunjungan plaza & plaza surabaya more on branded or imported products. WTC is for handphone products.
For kids, we recommend to go to Taman remaja & the beach. We also went to Taman safari in malang (about 2 hours journey from surabaya). we enjoy our day at the safari park as it's not only about wild animals but also have amusement centres and we pay for Rp80000/ head and can access everything including the rides (more than 20s inc go cart, bumper car, roller coaster, ghost house, train, boat etc).
we also went to the new bridge connecting surabaya & madura island & buy some souvenirs items from the madura island sellers. We felt that our 3 nights 4 days stay at surabaya is not enough & we'll back again sometime next year.
Though there are the 2 frustrating issues but overall the hotel is satisfactory.
