We, a group of 4 friends, arrived in Hotel Mandalapuri in Malang in July. This being the Indonesian school holiday season, most of the hotels in Malang were fully occupied. Mandalapuri looked ok enough from the outside. We took a 4 people family room for 320,000. The room had 2 big beds, and a rather dilapidated bathroom. A broken tub added to the fun. But the rooms were adequate, although overpriced. Breakfast was included in the price.
However, be aware that the staff at the desk know very little English. It is not a crime, certainly. But what irked us was that we checked out of the hotel on Wednesday to go on a tour to Kawa Ijen, and explicitly told the manager at the desk that we would be back on Friday. We left our bags, and the manager duly wrote down the same room for us. Well, surprise! Come Friday, late in the night, we find that the same manager has given the room away! At no point of time does he even look at us, instead pointing to two double rooms for 460,000, which we could not consider at all since it was way over our budget. No one from the hotel bothered to help us, the manager looked the other way, and nothing was left but to drag our bags at 8:30PM, and make our way to Helios, where they helpfully guided us to the bus station for a bus to Surabaya.
My end note : There are better hotels in Malang, Helios being one of them. This is neither value for money nor does it offer basic courtesies to customers. The disco attached to the hotel can also be disruptive at night.
