I chose this resort mainly because of the overwhelmingly positive reviews on TripAdvisor. We stayed here 4 nights to split our Bali vacation time between Ubud (village) and Nusa Dua (resort town).
First off, if you go into the resort realizing that they built it in a jungle environment in a remote region of a developing country, it is quite impressive. That being said, the resort is in a jungle environment, which means that you will experience mosquitoes, bugs, and other wildlife that you probably wouldn't always expect if you were vacationing in a relatively expensive 5-star resort.
The Tanggayuda location is about a 20 minute drive from the center of Ubud. Traffic is variable depending on the time of day you travel (one day it took us almost 50 minutes) since there is only 1 road. The hotel has a shuttle that runs daily to take you to the village and to one of its other locations in Monkey Forest. The other Komaneka locations are situated closer to town, and are withing walking distance of other restaurants.
The staff, as mentioned by other reviewers, is incredibly helpful and friendly. They all work very hard and have extreme attention to detail. I initially booked a standard suite villa (Room 204) but was upgraded to a pool villa (126) when it was apparent that the air conditioning did not work. The pool villa (126) was very nice, but I noticed that rooms were variable depending on their location. My villa had a mini infinity pool overlooking some foliage, but the water was too cold to swim in (no direct sunlight). The villa itself was designed very nicely, with a lava rock soaking tub, shower, king bed, dual vanities, and daybed outside. The bathroom amenities were custom to the hotel brand--it was a little underwhelming given the prices you're paying for the resort. There was a bit of mold damage on the lower portions of the walls, and some gaps in the walls to the outside.
When we visited, the new restaurant was completed, as was the new infinity pool below. The view into the forest and distant rice terraces was amazing. The quality of the restaurant items were amazing and all items were reasonably priced--I really don't have any complaints. I did notice that dinner service tended to be slow (server was overworked) during the peak hours, even though room service was quite prompt. The new pool also had an amazing view, but had a weird sewage-like smell at one end; I suspect that there was probably a water drainage pipe nearby or below.
Overall, Komaneka is an impressive resort. It has great views, wonderful staff, and villas. Again, be aware that the hotel is not within walking distance of Ubud. They offer taxi service to and from the airport but pricey for the area. I'd recommend using the Bluebird taxi from the airport and a private taxi back if possible.
