“Wow !!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2011

Amazing hotel, romantic peaceful setting and fantastic food! Would certainly recommend this without a doubt for those looking for tranquil and luxury. Hillside hotel made up of several villas with own infinity pools and fantastic views. Spend only three nights here as late booking and no other availability, but wished it had been more! Certainly a place to relax, unwind and wash away the stresses! Although hotel was fully booked, we didnt see that many other guests, and it maintained an atmosphere of tranquility and calm. Hotel has a complimentary bus service into main Ubud which was reliable and quick. Ubud itself is busy and hot! The sights and sounds numerous and interesting, the Market area the place for bargains! The spa complex next to the hotel is a definite must. We booked separately for this as the hotel special offers were fully booked, but just rang the spa ourselves and a private treatment villa was available. We were able to drop our luggage at the hotel and spent 4hrs of relaxation and pampering before check in time. Within the private treatment villas are infinity pool, hillside jacuzzi and steam room. Together with own therapist and side by side treatment couches, this is pure luxury!! The 4 hrs weren't long enough! We wanted to stay forever! The hotels private villas are exactly as seen on the website, and have sunken baths and separate shower areas. Some of the fixtures and fittings in our villa were showing some signs of age, but this added to the charm somehow. The hotel grounds were amass of greenery and well tended pathways down to the river edge. The very occasional screams from people enjoying the river rafting were the only disturbances we had!!! Fantastic hotel, recommend without a doubt.....

From the moment you walk through the lobby to see the magnificent view from one of the restaurants out into the steep valley you know this is no ordinary hotel. This place is amazing. Once registered, complete with cool drinks and towels, we were lead down a number of steps, yes be prepared for steps, there are lots of them (more about this later) to an amazing two story villa. We have a 15 year old and a 13 year old who took the twin beds upstairs and we we shown to a four poster king size bed dowstairs, and we are talking huge king size here. Both levels have ensuites with very large marble baths as well as separate showers and downstairs also leads to our beautiful private infinity pool.

During the four night stay we sampled three of the four restaurants including an organic restaurant right next to the Ayung River. The food was good with prices you wwould expect when eating in-house.

We saw all of the close local attractions including the elephant park (well worth it as you get picked up early and beat the crowds from the coast) and white water rafting that gos right past the Royal Pita so anyone with a camera gets front row seats to watch the family paddle past.

Local shopping and attractions including Balinese dancing are plenty and the hourly shuttle from Royal Padma makes travel in and out easy.

If you have mobility issues this place would be a problem because the Royal Pita is perched on a steep valley face and there are lots and lots of steps accordingly. We had 75 steps to and from the main lobby but it wasn't a problem really, we soon got used to it.

The TV reception in our villa was poor but you don't come here to lie in bed and watch TV so we didn't care that much and didn't bother asking them to look at it and our teenagers had that many cheap DVDs that they were happy.

I'd certainly recommend this place as a great break from the coast and another side to Bali worth seeing.

We stayed in The Royal Pita Maha for 5 nights during a 11 day honeymoon in Bali. This was our first visit to Bali and the Royal Pita Maha couldn't have been a better introduction to the beauty of Ubud. The location of the hotel is perfect, its about a 15 min drive from Monkey Forest Road (main area for restaurants, shopping, etc in Ubud) and located in a Valley overlooking the Ayung River. One could very easily spend a week in the Villa itself with its spectacular infinity pool, massive room and astounding view. Really gives one a feeling of living in the middle of the jungle but with all the luxuries of a 5 star hotel. Be warned however that this is not a hotel for those looking for good food or a great spa. I suggest you stay here and take the shuttle/taxi into ubud for your meals. The food is mediocre and in-house spa is very basic. All in all the resort is a must visit once in a lifetime kinda place. Tip: try staying in a villa close to the reception (top of the valley).

Service was excellent, the view when you 1st walk into the lobby over looking the valley is literally jaw-dropping. The food is quite expensive for Bali standards but you are only a ten minute shuttle bus ride from town. I highly recommend this place

This property is situated in what must be one of the (if not the) most spectacular locations in and around Ubud. The views are exceptional.

The villsas are quite large and very comfortable... but there best part is the location of the bed and the full-wall of windows so that you wake up to a lush view of rainforest and a river valley.

Comments by other travellers about the service are overstated! We found the staff very friendly and very helpful. It is true that on the margins the operation is not as polished as the western influenced and trained operations of chains (see; The Four Seasons / the St. Regis). But, this is a Balinese owned and operated hotel and we found not much wanting!

The bathroom did have a somewhat stale smell... but it is not that bad. I suspect this is a by product of building a luxury bathroom/plumbing on the side of a mountain.

Our excitement for the evening was that (two nights in a row) frogs appeared in our villas. They were actually quite large and hopping around. We are a yuppy (not very outdoorsy) couple, so we had no clue what to do. The hotel staff happily came to our room at 1am and chased them out of the room, and even caught one in a towel. If this type of thing freaks you out, then I dont recommend staying here... but I do recommend this hotel, and just relaxing your expectations about these glitches: youre in the middle of a rainforest!

As well documented in pics and other reviews, the private pools are lovely, and exceptionally large. Food at the restaurant is OK - but I highly recommend lunch at the "organic" restaurant down by the river. VERY good.

No one was swimming in the public lagoon, I suppose because it is so far from the rooms. But, don't miss this - it is a great experience with amazing views of the waterfall, river and valley walls. Also, you can choose to have breakfast delivered to your room: another thing I'd recommend!

There is a conveninet shuttle into central ubud. It's about a 12 minute drive. Staff were prompt and reliable with the schedule.

The hotel does requires some serious walking up/down steps to get around - be warned if you are not in the best health or have difficult with steps. But, this was fine for us.

Free wifi in lobby. There is supposed to be wifi in rooms too, but ours didn't have signal strength. No workout facilities.

A most special hotel which I cannot recommend strongly enough for its location, great villas/pools, and helpful and friendly staff. Leave your western five-star pretensions of absolute perfection behind and you'll have a great stay.

This review is coming late as my partner and I stayed at the Royal Pita last November. The resort is beautiful, and the view as you walk into the lounge/eating area are breath-taking. I have never seen anything like it....it was amazing. The staff are lovely, kind people and we enjoyed meeting Widi, the Night Manager, whom we still email from time to time. He was very helpful and friendly and helped us with anything we needed. There is a lot of walking, up and down stairs so you must be in good condition to stay here. The breakfasts where wonderful and the grounds are very beautiful. Our villa was amazing and our private pool was huge. For those who really don't like creepy crawls, be aware that many do come in through the doors as they are not a secure seal. That was the only thing that kept me from having a sound sleep. Other than that, I would say it is a must place to stay and see when in Ubud. Breath-taking.

We travelled to Ubud, Bali, on the last leg of our trip which took us from Jakarta overland
thru to Jojakarta, Solo, Surabaya and Bali. We usually stay, when in Ubud. at the Pita Maha hotel, but this time they were full up so we were directed to their last born child :
the Royal Pita Maha. This resort is truly "royal" : from the settings to the landscapes to
the accommodations which are not simply rooms, but private villas with private swimpools and beautiful inside and outside furniture: deckchairs, tables, linen, toilettries, and much more. There are two kinds of villas, ours was an "olistic" villa
with a very large swimpool of olistic water. Also there is a spa which we did not have the time to try because we only stayed two nights. If you choose to try their organic breakfast/lunch they have a dedicated venue for organic food. The whole place has been built on different levels connected by elevators, it is not recommended for handicapped people or people who have any kind of trouble with their legs because you have to mount a very large number of steps, otherwise it is a good exercise. On the grounds, beautifully kept, there is an incredible water fall, a river where we saw many people practising rafting, a breathtaking panorama, but the most startling feeling you get in this place is that of being in a tropical forest with its sights and sounds and smells.
The staff seems at times slightly naive, but I suppose they will learn fast to be more professional since the management has shown to be very attentive and experienced with their other properties.
There is a shuttle service to Ubud town which is about 15/20 minutes away depending on the traffic. All in all we regretted not being able to spend more time at the Royal.
