“Best view you can imagine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2013

The best resort I have ever stayed in. Very polite and friendly staff and very clean rooms.
My room had a very beautiful view over the river and when we went to rafting on the river we saw many Hotels along the river but The Royal Pita Maha had absolutely the best location.

Room Tip: rooms on the upper side of the resort have better view over the river (room number between 108 and 1...

The best resort I have ever stayed in. The view when you first arrive is just breathtaking. When being shown around one of the staff commented "you are kings and Queens"', and that is exactly how we were treated whilst we were there. Food was good, rooms were great, I can't think of any negatives. Thank you to the Royal Pita Maha for a wonderful stay at your resort.

We already stayed there twice and will probably come back when being in Ubud. The rooms are wonderful, all have a pool (not heated) and views to die for. The garden is great, but a LOT of stairs to the rooms. If you have problems with stairs, this hotel is not for you. The food is fine, but not great, but the views from the restaurants are perfect. The SPA is one of the best SPAs i've ever been at!

We stayed three nights at the Royal Pita Maha at the end of the rainy season. What struck us the most was how beautiful and luscious the gardens were. And the views of the valley, rainforest, rock and river running through the gorge at the bottom are absolutely breathtaking! If you have a royal villa you will be at the top of the resort with stunning views over the Jurassic-park like jungle below. The second thing that struck us is how spoilt guests are for choice when it comes to swimming pools: every room has a private pool (which is big enough for a decent swim), then there is the main pool, a pool in the spa area, pools in the spa treatment rooms, a spring water pool (with healing waters), and another 'lagoon' running parallel to the river below (where you can go white-water rafting if you like). I particularly liked the yoga pavilion down by the river where they offer guests free morning classes against the luscious green backdrop and rushing sounds of the river.
The staff are also very sweet and really do their best to be as hospitable as possible.

However, there were a few things which I did not feel were up to five star standards. The food was not the best - coffee at breakfast was weak, the fruit juices were watery, omelettes however were great and we constantly had 15 staff hanging around watching us and wishing us good morning every five minutes. We were only there for three days so we found them friendly but this can get really annoying if you stay longer!

The spa was very very disappointing. And I am not sure if this was because we booked treatments for Nyepi Day, the Balinese national holiday which may have meant that the regular staff was on vacation and the spa was only operating at half its normal service. If so, this comment following is not justified and I apologize! However, we booked treatments and filled out quite a bit of paperwork before the treatments, when we came to the treatment rooms, the staff were clueless what we had booked and even though I asked for back and shoulder treatment, the massage lady only spent 10 minutes of a one hour massage on my back. The pedicure was equally bad - it was only for the nails but out of the 30-mins, about 25 mins was spent on putting nail polish on (too many layers without a drying solution meant that it takes around 2 hours to dry in the tropics) and only 5 minutes on the nailcare. I skipped the manicure because the pedicure was just too unenjoyable.

I would honestly not have minded if I was paying just EUR 5 for a pedicure and EUR 10 for this massage then my expectations would be a lot lower, but at EUR 35 plus tax for a pedicure and EUR 60 for a massage, i.e. European prices, then I expect European standards. When I complained, they were very apologetic and reimbursed the pedicure. Still, I had been looking forward to the treatments beforehand so it was disappointing. To make matters worse, the two girls doing the treatment did not seem to understand anything - about beauty treatments or in English ... it was very frustrating trying to communicate with them.
The other thing about the spa is that they charge EUR 20 for three-hour entry, even to guests. If you book a treatment, you can use the spa garden free of charge for an hour. However, we were not allowed to use the pools in our treatment villa even though we had each booked two hours of treatments. I feel that the charge for the spa garden is a bit overpriced as all it contains is a steam room, sauna and swimming pool ... nothing really special for the tropics where you want to cool down instead of steaming yourself out!

I know I am being critical here but the food and spa at the Royal Pita Maha were really disappointing.
However, I definitely recommend staying here for the magnificent location and views and it is a great base from which to explore Ubud. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus to and from Ubud every hour which is a great bonus. I just wouldn't recommend dining in the hotel or using the spa facilities.

Room Tip: Royal Villas at the top are close to lobby and have great views.

A beautiful Balinese 5 star resort that is a world away from crowds, traffic and chaos!

The Royal Pita Maha offers guests a unique perspective on the Ayung River and a wonderful place to relax and enjoy nature in a beautiful and picturesque setting.

Spa is excellent and the food is very good.

We stayed at the Royal Pita Maha for our honeymoon and it was even more stunningly beautiful than the pictures. We stayed in villa 105 which had a gorgeous view of the river and jungle. The staff were always courteous, helpful and friendly. The restaurant offered an a la carte menu which we tried on the first night. While it wasn't the highlight of our stay, it is acceptable if you're arriving late or if you're feeling too relaxed to make the trip to town.

My husband and I prefer to sleep without airconditioning so we left the bathroom and tv room door open and closed the curtains, which was sufficient to keep most insects out.

The hourly shuttle bus to and from town was very convenient although it tends to leave 5 minutes early when returning to the resort and often we'd arrive before the stated departure time only to find that it had already left. A taxi is cheap however so it didn't bother us too much.

The grounds are extensive with multiple swimming spots to choose from. The organic restaurant overlooking the river is quite nice.

It really is a beautiful resort which has a lovely traditional Balinese feel to it. I would highly recommend this resort to anyone looking to treat themselves. It was so nice coming back to such lovely accommodation after spending a day in town.

Room Tip: For those not wanting to walk up too many steps, then get villas that are closer to the lobby e.g. 1...

We just returned from 30 days of travel through Asia, starting in Myanmar, Bali and then to Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. We booked a 3 night stay in Bali at the Royal Pita Maha and could not believe what we saw. It was amazing to see the entrance to the resort, then the reception area. A short walk to a large villa with a private infinity pool looking into a valley of lush green. Staff was elegant, polite and efficient. The grounds were carefully maintained with losts of green plants and rock formations. Dining was beautiful in open air rooms with breathtaking views of the waterfall, river and pools all located on the property. Yoga under a covered thatched area along the river was so zen like. The Spa offered a private retreat for couples that takes place in a two story villa with private views of the property. The treatments were tastefully handled and the environment was something we have never experienced. A shuttle is offered to take you to the spa and back or you can make the walk yourself. We spent most of the first day exploring the 14 hectors of this amazing property. It was hard to leave, but the resort provides a convenient shuttle to Ubud or Monkey Farm. Watching an afternoon shower pass over while enjoying tea service with majestic views was a lovely break, we finished our visit with a trek through a local village to see how locals live and work. Good food, wonderful staff, a stop notch spa and the most beautiful grounds imaginable makes Royal Pita Maha one of my favorite spots in the world.

Room Tip: There are lots of steps on the property so closer to reception if you want to minimize walking. The...
