“Bali's best kept secret”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

Faultless. I never thought I would say that about a hotel, but you can see why it is rated the Ni1 hotel in Bali on Tripadvisor.

This is a small luxury hotel that defines the very best in service, ambience, food, relaxation and management. Led for the last year by Simon Spiller - definitely a GM to watch in the future - his charm and quiet authority are evident everywhere. No detail escapes his attention, yet the staff are clearly happy, beautifully trained and flourishing under his leadership. He told me there were improvements to be made, but I couldn't see where - at least from an experience perspective.

The service is superb - omin-present yet not invasive. With only 20 villas and a staff-to-villa ratio of 4:1 you know you are going to be pampered. Your arrival, your check-in, your vila/suite preparation is faultless. You are assigned a personal butler who looks after your every need - from escorting on walks around the local rice fields, to servicing the villa to bringing you room service. Nothing is too much trouble. And, critically, they have the perfect balance between attentiveness and familiarity.

The property is quite large, so there is a feeling of space and serenity.

Food under Chef Dean is a joy - his enlarging of the organic vegetable and edible flower garden is evident in the taste and beauty of his dished, He even smokes his own smoke salmon.

Really whether here for a night or a week (and after the first night you will wish it was a week) you will fall in love with the Chedi Club and the staff. Forget the Oberoi, the Bulgari or the Four Seasons, this is small Luxury hotel experience at its best.

Perfect for honeymooners, couples or singles. Less ideal for families as you'll feel guilty about spoiling the serenity!

Room Tip: Upgrade to a private villa with pool for the ultimate indulgence

My Girlfriend and I stayed here for 4 nights towards the end of our 3 week long holiday and we truly saved the best until last. What can you say about this place that hasn't been said already!?

From the moment we were greeted at the steps of the hotel, until the moment we waved goodbye, we were smiling and relaxed.

We were met at the reception with smiles and a refreshing drink and piece of fruit and quickly and efficiently checked in. Our luggage was taken for us emmediately to our room. The check in staff were very fast and very friendly. Perfect so far.

Next we were introduced to our personal butler, Jun, who drove us briefly around the grounds, speaking to us in perfect English and explaining where every thing is and timings for breakfast etc, before taking us to our AMAZING private villa.

The villa was large and welcoming. It was set up so that you walk directly into a large lounge-bedroom, with a bathroom behind it. The room was wonderfully set up with Balinese artwork on the walls and very modern technology to help you relax. Each room I believe comes with a fully loaded and refilled daily, free minibar, as well as a Bose sound system already playing Balinese music. Very relaxing to arrive to! The bathroom was sensational. Half indoor, and half outdoor. The shower was fantastic and they even had a traditional Balinese washing system if you didn't fancy a regular bath or shower!

The grounds to the hotel are quite exquisite. The swimming pool (if you don't have your own private one) is perfect. A huge infinity pool with a pool assistant ready to lay your towel out for you the second you arrive, and on hand to bring you complimentary refreshments. Perfect.

The dining experience at the Chedi is too quite perfect. Chef Dean must be applauded for his ability to make anything on demand should the fantastic menues not be enough! Chef Dean also provides a cooking demonstration, after walking you briefly around his paddy field/ vegetation plantation. Very recomended if you are a foody.
Price wise, the food at the hotel was more expensive than the town, of course, you are in a hotel, it's a given. However, still well priced and never stupidly priced, not limiting your choice on the menu.

The hotel puts on a free taxi service to and from the town, dropping you where ever you want, and giving you a mobile phone to use to call the hotel to pick you up. Very clever.

On arriving back to the hotel after an evening in the town, the Chedi is beautifully lit, just adding that extra special feeling to the place.

The Staff are quite brilliant. From Simon, the very intelligent, and very approachable General Manager to the waiters and waitresses in the restaurant, to the groundstaff, all absolutely perfect. They all greeted you with an honest and welcoming smile, and on the most part all remembered our names. Very very impressed.

Lastly, I would like to mention our butler, Jun. Quite an amazing young man to whom we actually became quite attached to! He was very professional and very very good at his job. He took us for a walk one morning through the paddy fields before the sun was fully up, and then through a local village before we returned to have breakfast. Jun was sociable, yet private at the same time. He spoke to us about Balinese life and his familly, truly interesting.
As the foodies we are, we asked Jun for a few restaurant recommendations before we went for a swim. We arrived back later to find an entire list of places in the town to eat, cleverly detailed from price to type of cuisine to location. Some of the suggestions even had recommendations to try certain dishes. This was again something that someone had spent a lot of time perfecting!

Each evening Jun left us something to return to our rooms to find. He must be THE best towel folder/craftsman around! We had from elephants to cool pigs wearing sunglasses awaiting our return, made out of the towels. Again, a brilliant touch from the hotel and staff.

Treble the prices, and double the distance, we would still come back again and again!

Thank you to the Chedi club hotel and staff for a truly amazing 4 days. See you again soon.

This was our third time at Chedi Club and we are seriously considering buying part of the property and moving in there :))) It is THAT good! Besides, how can you not love Bali! And then there is food... We simply could not wait till lunch or dinner time!

We stayed at the Chedi for the final leg of our honeymoon and we were blown away!!

From the moment we arrived,we were treated like royalty. Our friend (butler) Agus was there every time we needed him. He made sure everything was prefect for our stay. He even stopped to visit us at dinner to make sure we were okay. Now that is what I call beyond the call if duty.

We ate at the resort everyday and the food was great! The Chef and resturant staff are top notch!

The pool villa was beyond gorgoues with a bed that was out if this world. The pillow were the best! My wife mentioned to Agus that we love the pillows and where did the hotel get them. He went out if his way to try and find out if we could purchase a pair but there were none available at the time.

I think the best part of our stay was the trek through the rice paddy field and local village. Agus seemed very passionate about his country and culture. You could see it in his eyes as he answered the many questions we had.

Mr.Simon, please pass this on to Agus and let him know that because of his hospitality, our honeymoon and stay at the Chedi will never be forgotten.

P.S. We still want the pillows lol

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Chedi Club, Tanah Gajah Ubud in October this year. We were utterly pampered with good food, great service, and a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere - which was exactly what we were looking for.

Our butler Komang was adorable - he had a shy demeanour and was very polite, but was always there to help us arrange for trips or make reservations when we needed assistance. On the complimentary rice padi trekking tour (about 1.5hours), Komang walked us around Tanah Gajah's very own rice padi fields and the nearby village, giving us insights about the daily lives of the average balinese. The experience was lovely and memorable, we toured at our own pace, took silly pictures whenever we wanted (with Komang as well!), chased some ducks, and looked on as the farmers went about their harvesting duties.

We opted for the spa villas and were pampered with complimentary 90 min spa sessions of our choice every single day. This was something to rave about as their masseurs were quite good, and it was a perfect start or end to your day especially if you've gone jungle trekking, village hiking, or bicycling touring round ubud. Better to book your spa early if you can though, as they have limited slots everyday.

Having your meals in the tranquility and beauty of golden rice padi fields was a luxury, and was definitely something different from the poolside restaurants most other resorts would offer. We love that Tanah Gajah offers complimentary high tea and cocktails every evening, on top of the daily complimentary breakfast menu and everything you can eat/drink in your very own villas. We pretty much spent half of each day just hanging around the resort, just chilling out and using the in house facilities (even tried their tennis and table tennis courts!). If you need to get souvenirs in town, their free chaffeur service is there to fetch to the city during the day. We tried the famous babi kuling at the famous ibu oka 2, which is just 5 mins away from the resort by car - really convenient!

All in all, it was really a fantastic experience and we'd recommend it to all couples heading to bali for a private, luxurious retreat, just as we did.

The exceptional service began from the moment we were picked up by the driver at the airport.
We were greeted with a friendly smile and he insisted to take our bags to the car.
Once we were in the car we were handed 2 cold towels and 2 bottles of water. Just what we needed! Part of the fabulous Chedi service is free transfers to and from the airport.
When we arrived at the resort we were blown away with the magnificently manicured gardens and how the 20 villas were perfectly positioned within the resort. We were in villa 19 which was so beautiful! We loved the outdoor bathroom with an enormous rain shower, huge bath and 2 sinks. Each villa comes with a private butler. We loved our butler Tari. She couldn't do enough for us. She made us feel so welcome and comfortable. Also included is 6 pieces of laundry per day per person as well as a free mini bar including alcohol! On the coffee table were 2 caraffes filled with vodka and whiskey.. also included!!
The restaurant is situated in the middle of rice paddies with breathtaking views all around!
Breakfast was delicious!!!
The pool service was outstanding! As soon as we sat down the pool butler brought us 2 cold towels, 2 glasses of iced water as well as suntan lotion and facial mist!! Our glasses were constantly refilled! I have never experienced service like this before.
Simon the manager introduced himself to us which I thought was a nice touch. Tari booked Bridges restaurant for us and Simon made sure to secure us a lovely table by sending an email to the manager. See my review on TA about Bridges restaurant! Sensational!
We have travelled extensively and have never had such exceptional service as we had at The
Thank you Simon, Tari, the wonderful chef Dean and all the staff for making our holiday so memorable, relaxing and enjoyable!!
We look forward to coming back next year!!

Our trip was for four nights, arriving on 30 October. This was our fourth visit to a GHM hotel and lived up to our expectations that we had got used to at the previous three. We stayed in Villa 12, which is a pool villa and would thoroughly recommend this, as is it located at the edge and you therefore do not hear any noise. The food and service in the restaurant was superb, with a wide choice available (the chef is more than happy to prepare your dish should it not be on the menu, you just need to ask). We also learned during our visit that Chef Dean will be updating the menu in the coming months. During our stay, we undertook the following:

- Cookery course with Chef Dean, which included a tour around his herb garden (and you also get to eat the food afterwards)
- Walk around the paddy fields with your butler (you also walk back through the local village)
- Trip to Ubud (free transfers that can be arranged by your butler)

In line with the other GHM hotels, we met the GM (who already knew our names) several times and chatted with him. If you did have any issues, these could therefore be addressed at the top - something which we like.

The only one minor point that we would mention was that, on our last night, we ordered in villa dining and, whilst the food was beautifully cooked, this was unfortunately served to us cold.
