“Extraordinary location and top of the range quality of service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2009

We stayed 3 nights in a duplex pool villa and had the best time of our Asian trip (which started at the Shangri-La in Singapore and the Westin at Nusa Dua). We have a 6-year old daughter who simply felt at home and enjoyed both the private pool of the villa and the nice swimming pool of the resort. My wife experienced the Tree spa and had a very good time. There is only one restaurant in the hotel but it offers a large choice of Western and Asian specialties and it ranks among the best tables we have experienced during our trip.
Thanks to its extraordinary location over the Ayung river and to the surprising intimacy of its individual villas Kupu Kupu Barong is a completely different world from the traditional 5-star hotels. Our villa had a stunning view and a very warm atmosphere.
Service in the hotel was very efficient and kind.
All this has a price and Kupu Kupu Barong is an expensive hotel but we certainly do not regret the money we spent during these 4 days.

It was amaizing I went there with my husband for our honeymoon . We reserved the honeymoon package and it was worth every dime . The hotel staff were extremely friendly and made sure that we had an unforggetable honeymoon experience any thing we needed they made sure we got it . The view is breath taking , we got the villa that over looks the river , really amaizing . The food is excellent but they just need to add more items to the menu and you can always take the hotel shuttle to the town and eat there . The spa expereince was wonderful we got the wings of love treatment with the package . We got lots of great things with the package , it was overall a wonderful honeymoon . It is far but an amaizing hide away for romance , but if you're afraid of insects dont go to Bali seriously they come out from every where . There are lots of adventures to take outside the hotel . Finally if you're looking for romance and peace of mind go to Kupu Kupu Barong it means after all the giant butterfly .

We spent 3 nights in Kupu-kupu Barong Room 27, for rate of ~200 USD/night (domestic rate) from online agent. I think the publish rate is around 320 for the type of room we got. I booked around 2 months in advance with no issue. But when we were there, we heard from couple of butlers that it was already fully booked (even overbook that some guest needs to be transferred to nearby resort) although not peak season.

From the moment we were picked up at the airport, the driver is very courteous (giving COLD water, towel and even turn the air con on before our arrival). He also stop by in some places to entertain us while waiting for the check in time (our flight arrives in 9.30 am while check in is starting 2 pm). The room we got is amazing, very spacious with good design (modern but comfy). I especially loved the indoor day bed near the wall-sized window. Our room is also facing Ayung river with rice terrace underneath us. We also have our own private plunge pool and large terrace.

If you cannot detach yourself with TV, they also have plasma TV with various international channels. The bed is AMAZING (King Koil brand) and the sheet is also tremendous. The water pressure is great, felt very fresh to your skin. The butler also provide flower petals in the bath tub (but only for the first night). Activities? Well, they have bicycles you can borrow for free to go around. Nearby there’s a great Chicken Rice (Nasi Ayam Ibu Mangku). Rafting if you want (we can actually hear the screams everyday from our room). But personally most of the days we just lounge out for hours and enjoying each others company.

O yeah, the location of the villas is spread through out a hillside. So from the lobby to our room, it’s a good 5-8 mins slow walk with stairs. Or you can call buggy (but queue). But it’s manageable.

There are couple of hick ups but it’s not destroying the overall experience. Some issues we had:
a) Wi-fi not working from our room (the receptionist said maybe because our room location). When we use the internet at the lobby at 9 am, it didn’t work as well. We report this and waited for 30 mins but it’s not fixed yet.
b) When we ask for room clean up around 11 am, the cleaner did not come until 3 pm (that was after we rang for the 2nd time)
c) Food is relatively expensive compare to Bali standard (even for nice restaurants) and the taste is not that amazing. But it was OK and have good presentation.
d) Various bugs creeping into our room although we already use the bug spray, electric spray and always kept the door/window tightly closed. But that’s what you get for vacationing to tropical island.
e) Our shuttle to Ubud center actually TURN BACK with us in it, simply because there were LATE guest that wants to be picked up for free. Now this one I don’t appreciate the most.
But as said before, these hick ups are just small annoyance and not significant.

As the setting is very romantic, I recommend this especially for couples. If only friends getaway, I think it’ll just be awkward in this setting. Or at least try booking their Lumbung cottages instead of the private villas. Overall very good experience, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the experience!

My husband and I spent 6 nights at the Kupu Kupu Barong, in a private villa over looking the river. Words cannot describe how beautiful it was. The resort staff, but especially the Butlers, go out of their way to ensure your stay is lacking nothing. And the spa was truely something to be experienced. The resort is a little way out of town, but a free shuttle service is provided, and Ubud and Monkey Forrest are easily enjoyed.

My husband and I went to Kupu in May 2007 for 4 nights before flying over to lombok for 10 nights. It's really hard to describe just how beautiful it is. The villas are amazing, all made out of balinese wood, and are extremely beautiful. There is a huge bath made completely out of marble. We had a villa with a private plunge pool and it was lovely. The view over the valley is so picturesque and romantic. It's on 3 floors, and you can't believe what you get for your money. It's a huge villa, with flat screen tv's, satellite tv (for those who will use it), and you get fresh fruit every day.

As we were on honeymoon, we didn't really do any sight seeing, just chilled out at the hotel. It was so relaxing and traditional.

When you first arrive, you're greeted by an extremely warm welcome of cocktails and flowers. This is a relief, as when you're driving down the drive to the hotel, it's a bit worrying and looks like it's going to be horrible! Quite the opposite!

The best things about our stay were:

1. Total relaxation in possibly the most beautiful surroundings I have ever seen.
2. Lovely staff who can't do enough for you. We had 'welcome' written on our bed in petals when we arrived, sarongs as gifts, and bath robes that were lovely.
3. You feel like you have full attention of the staff at all times, yet feel that you have total privacy and are not surrounded by hundreds of other tourists. To be honest, we hardly ever saw other people!
4. The couples massage was unbelievable! Firsly they exfoliate and massage your legs in warm water. Then you go for your massage, which is in the same room, and is a real place of serenity and calm.
5. The food was lovely, and the afternoon cakes and tea that are included in the price are beautiful. They're local delicacies and you have to try them, they're lovely. We went for afternoon tea every day that we were there.
6. We had an evening meal over the water at a special table (near to the reception). That was so lovely and special, we will never forget it.
7. All balinese people that we met are friendly, polite, eager to please and just generally lovely. We made friends with someone in the car on the way to the airport, and he invited us into the VIP lounge. This is typical of this culture - so welcoming.
8. There's nothing to do, which I found was great for us. I can see that this might get a bit tiring if you're there for more than 4 nights though.

The only thing that I would watch out for is insects. If you really can't be around them, then this isn't the place for you. We had a really frightening experience when we went. The hotel staff fumigate the resort once a week to get rid of flying ants etc. On our first night there, this was done, and all of the ants came inside. We had a mosquito net, but were awoken to buzzing noises and a sense of something crawling on us. When we opened our eyes and turned on the lights, there were literally hundreds of them all over the net trying to get into the bed. Even my husband was freaking out about it. The hotel staff were great and came to sort it out immediately. The apologised profusely, and it didn't happen again. It was pretty scary though. Apart from that, the insects didn't bother us. We ate dinner next to preying mantis' and all sorts. After a day or two, you just get used to it.

We didn't see anything like spiders except for tiny ones, and you honestly just get used to the other things. It becomes pretty normal to need to get rid of a grasshopper or locust from your room.

Overall though, an amazing stay, and an unbelievable honeymoon. You have to go!

I'll post some pictures when I get chance.

our stay was luxious and very pleasant. we had a pool villa at the bottom of the resort overlooking the river.. our plunge pool was a little cold, but that was no ones'fault.. all the facilities worked, the "butler'A was pleasamt, the spa was unreal!! the massages professional.
My only complaint was the plunge pool's first step was too deep for me to enter the pool,I had to jump in,and as you can imagine it was not a pretty sight when i got out!!! My friend had the same problem, one of the other partners had bad knees and this was very limiting..
overall a wonderful stay,,but would not recommend the plunge pool at all unless the steps were changed.
