This hotel was recommended by friends who stayed there during their honeymoon.
My 3 nights stay at Kupu Kupu Barong was the highlight of my trip. I mean the villas are very charming and its location is perfect, something like 7 minutes drive from Ubud which is a very peaceful area with however many things to do.

Concerning the room, we stayed in a wooden villas with a private pool and a great view; very warm and spacious place with good amenities. If your villa is a bit far from the lobby, there is golf car to takes you there.
Staff is very friendly like many other hotel staff in Bali, that's fascinating, the way they always remember your name, ok the pronunciation is not perfect but that's kind anyway.
Their Spa is also beautiful, good therapists, if you contact hotel directly before arrival, you must try to get 60 minutes free ;-)
Breakfast are good enough and copious to make you feel sated a good part of the day, their restaurant has a nice view (like villas) and the food is more than fine for a French Gourmet that I am 

It's strange how this hotel makes you feel alone in the world when the sun goes down. Jungle noises, bright nights, river sounds...Maybe the most romantic moment in my life.
I recommend it and will go back to Kupu Kupu Barong one day for sure.

Kupu Kupu Barong Villas & Tree Spa

After reading all the great reviews we decided in the middle of our Bali trip to do a 2night break at KUPU KUPU BARONG. We agree with most reviews about the superb location and the friendly staff, but we were extremley disappointed with the lack of quality of service - way below any 5 Star resort we stayed in before.

1. No one makes the room at night. No fresh towels, only one set of towels per person. If you want hot water for a shower or bath, you have to let the water run for at least 10 minutes before its getswarm.
2. That a Frog jumps in your room happens in the jungle, but that food trays from Room Service in the afternoon were not picked up and stayed all night was disgusting - and the Ants were of course all over it.
3. Very limited selection of wine. A call at 11 pm for a bottle lead to a call back from the Butler that they were very sorry, but they did not have a "key for the fridge" were the wine is stored. Also the only open White Wine is a local Balinese Chardonay. While we wholeheartly support local efforts to grow wine on Bali, we don't think we should be forced to consume it more then once!
4. One time the battery of the Golf Cart died on the steep hill and we had to push it up, the next time we waited 15 minutes in the pooring rain, and had to walk all wet up the step hill to the Spa...

We could continue the list of poor performances, all somewhat small in detail but if you know how smooth and excellent a 5 Star operation should run, this was way off. We had a feeling that while the individual staff member was very eager, there is clearly a lack of management focus in the overall operation. Too bad...

We stayed here for the first 5 nights of our honeymoon. We could not ask for anyplace more romantic. Every detail thought out....from breakfast each morning to our names written in rose petals on the bed at night. The staff were amazing and so helpful. Food was a little on the expensive side but was excellent quality. They had a shuttle going into ubud village regularly. The view of the river from our villa was exceptional! There was some noise from other guests - this was quickly sorted out by staff. For honeymooners - I recommend!!

We spent 3 nights at Kupu Kupu as part of our honeymoon & then went onto The Chedi Club (also in Ubud).

You can book this hotel in confidence! We really can't fault it.

We stayed in the Family Villa (they upgraded us as it was our honeymoon) & it took our breath when we went in. The first room had 2 single beds & its own bathroom, the second room was the double was was massive! The photos of these rooms don't do them justice. The infinity pool was also lovely & had the most amazing views.

The main rooms are the Ayung River Pool Villas & the Duplex Village Villas.

It was the little touches that made this hotel so special. Every morning they put small flowers by each of the paths, on the steps, on each of your towels etc & it looks beautiful. You have a butler but ours was not intrusive, he was just on hand should we have needed him & was extremely helpful.

All of the meals were fantastic & we had one 'romantic meal' which was separate from the restaurant (near the reception) & this was all decorated with petals & candles and lived up to its name! We didn't find the prices too expensive, even though they were hotel prices.

When we went on to The Chedi we spent each night in Ubud Centre for meals & we should have done this here as well because that really is cheap! We found a fantastic restaurant named 'Nomad' and it cost us £7 (total...yes total!!) for 2 two-course meals & 3 drinks! And it was very good food and service.

While we were in Bali we did a few trips. We booked the River Rafting & the Elephant Safari through the hotel (they used Bali Adventure Tours). It took us a while to choose which tour group to use but we picked well...these appear to be the best and looked after us very well. It would be worth noting this if you want to go rafting because a lot of the other tour groups had problems with their boats which isn't good thing!

The rafting was fantastic (& not too scary if you're a wimp like me!). You get very wet but it's all very safe and great fun. We went on to do the Elephant Safari which was a great experience, the Elephants are all rescued and seem very well looked after - we highly recommend it!

(While at The Chedi we went up the volcano - Mount Batur - which was amazing! I've described it in my Chedi review).

I've included as much as I can in this review to help you book, it took us a year & we definitely got it right! Please feel free to contact us if you would like some more information :)

Fantastic hotel nested in the valley on the outskirts of Ubud. Super friendly and helpful staff. The place is small enough for personalized treatment, the rooms are beautifully appointed. The restaurant terrace is beautiful. Diner very good although quite pricey. Breakfast leaves to be desired, it was good enough but not 5 star and we were not there to fill our bellies but to relax and had a great time, I would go again any time.
A very good restaurant called Gaya is close to the hotel (they will pick you up) even though the hotel does not recommend it, we found it the best around.
Internet : there is wireless in the lobby but is is very slow speed. Ok for regular email check, not good enough for fat files. Blackberry worked everywhere.

If you go, enjoy !
