Stayed here with my boyfriend for 8 nts in September 2005, on the final leg of our Asian holiday. Previously we had spent 4 nts Hong Kong and 5 nts Nusa Dua (on the beaches of Bali).
The hotel is set among stunning scenery overlooking the Ayung river (which is quite soothing when drifting off to sleep at night), and each villa has their own private infinity pool (my boyfriends personal favourite feature).
The villas are stunning - so much so that in our 8 nights there we only ever saw the hotel restaurant (on the 2 nts we ate there) and didn't bother with the main pool! The HUGE bathroom with a fantastic sunken bath (complete with fresh rose petals everyday) overlooking the "jungle" beneath us was my personal favourite, and as in addition there were another 2 showers to choose from (one inside, one out), there were never any arguments about who got to use the bathroom first!
The bedrooms were complete with cd / dvd / tv and a beautiful canopied bed, the dressing room was more than big enough to change in / store all our belongings, and the comfortable shaded day room (which was a welcome relief from the scorching midday sun) came complete with a fridge, ice, bottled water and fruit, all of which were replenished daily.
There was also a rectangular shaped fish pond in the villa, at the side of the breakfast table, and while we weren't sure whether we were to feed the fishes or not, they always seemed more than grateful for the odd left over croissant in the morning.
Gorgeous toiletries, fluffy bathrobes, a box of "treats" left every night in our room that contained a different sweet or chocolate each night, and a host of other things I probably haven't mentioned, made this a unique and truly luxurious place.
The turndown service at night is also something worth mentioning - we were convinced a team of cleaners hid around a corner and pounced as soon as we left the villa as each night the rooms were impeccably clean - and they always left a night candle burning in the day room to ward off the night time wildlife, which also smelled wonderful.
The butler service was thoughtful and efficient without being intrusive, and our order for breakfast the next morning was always picked up outside of our room and delivered as per our request no matter what ungodly hour we hung it outside our villa! And what a breakfast...this place is not somewhere to go to lose weight! Every morning the door bell rang and our butler would lay our table and deliver what we had ordered (cooked breakfast of your choice, tea or coffee, basket of croissants/muffins/toast/pastries, fresh fruit, cereal, and any type of freshly squeezed juice you could think of). We usually didn't require lunch...
As I mentioned, we ventured into the hotel restaurant in the evenings twice during our stay, and the food didn't disappoint. On both occasions we had the place to ourselves and thus the attention of all the staff, which was also quite special.
While by Balinese standards the food was expensive (well worth it though), this only equated to an average London restaurant (about £80 for 3 courses inc drinks and entrees, for 2 people).
The location of the Puri Wulandari is just outside of Ubud, but your butler will arrange complimentary transport to and from the centre (about a 5 min drive) whenever you like. It is true that being central, Ubud is slightly cloudier than on the coast, but this was sometimes a relief, and it was only ever passing cloud so it didn't linger over the sun for long.
Being the cultural capital of Bali, Ubud has many restaurants to choose from, most of which are more than acceptable and extremely cheap by western standards (average £12 each for 3 courses with drinks). However for anyone interested in staying up partying all night, I wouldn't recommend it. Although there are a few late night pubs and a really good jazz club, if you want a mini Ibiza (with the people to match), Kuta is probably more your style.
Being 23, I do enjoy the odd late night so would say 8 nts was enough in Ubud. Having said that, because of the hot days and the amount we crammed in during our stay, we were usually too tired to stay up past midnight anyway! And while I'm not a huge fan of the sea, my boyfriend definitely is, and he said he would've preferred longer on the coast. But no one listens to him anyway... For me, this place was perfect to get away from it all, and to not have to see a single other soul if you didn't want to. Ahhh…. bliss!
