“A special, secluded place - may not be right for everyone”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013 for a stay in September 2013

I stayed here with my friend for 5 nights. In general, we thought the place was really beautiful and special - it's two big bedrooms with their own bathrooms, a small kitchen, small living room and a big outdoor terrace with a beautiful infinity pool and some chairs. It's set in the middle of the rice paddies and jungle, in the hills around Ubud, already mountain country.

Unlike other places without A/C, it actually was a good temperature for us here and the fan was sufficient. The mosquito nets around the beds were good and did not appear to let any bugs in.The beds were also really comfortable.

The staff is lovely - very nice people from the local community who speak English reasonably well. The food they made for us was very good.

Downsides:

It's very far from Ubud. This could also be an upside, because I don't like Ubud at all, it's crowded and full of tourist traps. However, if you feel that you need to get off the compound, it will take some time and some money. The price list they presented at the beginning of our stay was wrong - they listed the return taxi price to Ubud as 150,000IDR, and the driver charged us 200,000IDR. I think it's still a reasonable price - he basically waits for you all day or all evening and then drives you back, but I don't like negotiating prices and wondering if someone is having one over on you.

You need a driver who knows how to get here - recommended by the villa. It is completely unmarked from the street and there are no real addresses in Ubud/Bali. I think it would be great to have a sign or something so that it could be found more easily.

The food is good, but simple. I think you would probably get tired of eating there solely, so you'll have to leave - and back to the difficulty of getting out.

The internet is very, very inconsistent. I understand that it's a bit much to expect incredible high speed internet in the country, but the place is advertised as having free unlimited internet. Unfortunately it was so inconsistent as to be unusable. In the time I wrote an email, the internet went down, and maybe back up again, and down again. We asked about this but the staff didn't really have a solution.

The other downside that I think I should mention is the staff - while they are good, their hours are limited and we weren't able to get breakfast when we wanted, etc. Also, there was a day where there was a celebration/ceremony in the village and clearly they wanted to be there. I felt bad that we had to keep them from it - perhaps the owners can ensure that they don't book visitors during those times. I'm not sure what the best solution is here.

Finally - the bathroom downstairs is a bit rustic. It fits in reasonably well with the decor and the look, but be forewarned. This is not a fancy, buttoned up place - it's basically part of the natural environment.

“Magnificent”

Perched on an amazing gorge the view into the valley is truly stunning and for us Villa Kalisha epitomises the romantic side of the surrounding Ubud area. The staff at Villa Kalisha are also outstanding. They treated us as family from the moment we arrived, taking care of our every need. Magie, the driver will always hold a very special place in our hearts. My husband unfortunately had to go to hospital during our stay and Magie literally held our hands every step of the way – we will be forever indebted to him. The Villa Manager, also went well beyond her call of duty to help us, despite us having to cut our stay short due to health problems. We would recommend Villa Kalisha to anybody. The villa is beautiful, the setting is magnificent, and the staff are out of this world.

“MAGNIFIQUE !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2014 for a stay in July 2014
Google Translation
