“Traditional dances”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

I attended the dance at a local village and was amazed by the colorful display, enthusiasm, and sheer spectacle.
I would suggest reading up (and doing this a few times to fully understand the background!) before you watch, as you may find it difficult to follow the legend.
It was quite amusing is to see local villagers (that I got to know and spoke to on a daily basis) dashing around, changing into colorful costumes, singing or chanting along with great gusto.
The Balinese are a very happy bunch and get very enthusiastic about traditional ceremonies etc - so the spontaneous performances are convincing.

The Kacek dancers tell an amazing story. Definitely take a good camera to capture the magic. The Fire dance...watch out for flying embers!

“Fascinating!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012

Really worth a look, but you need a little explanation before you go about what is actually happening or the story itself otherwise you won't follow it the plot!
Sit at the back if you can, it's a much better view

“Well worth going”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012

We went to the Kecak Ramayana and Fire Dance Presented by Krama Desa Ubud Kaja. Telp: 0361-973285. Location: Open Stage Pura Dalem, Ubud. It's shown on Monday and Friday at 7:30pm, costing 80,000. I've provided all this information as there were many different dances to choose from in/around Ubud, and I only saw this one.

Get there early for a front row seat, however you could see well enough from anywhere. There were two rows of seating around a central decorative lantern with many spouts the flames come out. It is lit at the beginning and the show is performed around this central lantern.

It took just over an hour and was hugely enjoyable, however it was a hot airless night, so you may want to bring a fan. As we arrived, we were given a page describing the story line, with explanations of the dramatic scenes, and Trance Dance (which is the Fire Dance) which was really helpful. This was also available in many different languages.

It started with the men coming out, and their chanting. I was really impressed by the chanting and how they depicted wind and waves was terrific. We were chanting off and on and wiggling our hands for days. The costumes of the main characters in the story were colourful, and the women beautiful. The actors were very animated in both their movements and their voices, and as we'd read the story line it didn't matter that we were listening to another language, it just worked. There is action, treachery, humour and love, all the elements of a good story.

The trance/fire dance was relatively short and dramatic. To the rhythm of more chanting, the dancer in a hobby horse outfit, scuffed his way through coconut husks which had been set alight. Those in the front row scooted their chairs back quickly and were 'alert' for the rest of the show. It was all very dramatic and entertaining. A couple of fellows scurried around sweeping the husks back, every time he walked through the fire. An interesting end to an enjoyable evening.

It was well performed and enjoyable, I would definitely recommend it.

“Mesmerising”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

On arrival we were handed a summary of the story, in English (there were other languages too), giving us the chance to follow the dance.

The dance started with a large group of men sitting in a circle chanting and singing and the action continued from there with beautiful dressed dancers performing the story. it lasted about an hour and, by the end, we were almost in a trance ourselves. The main dance was followed a fire dance which involved a man dancing with a 'hobby horse' and dramatically spreading out/kicking a bonfire of coconut shells with his bare feet, accompanied by the chanting men. After each bit of action, the fire was swept back up by 2 sweepers and the dance continued. Western health and safety advisers would have freaked out, as the fire came pretty close to the front row of the audience, but it was a spectacular site, in the dark.

If you forget a drink, or insect repellant, there were a couple of ladies very willing to sell you their stock.

Cost was 80k rup and the show last about 75 minutes. Well worth it.
