“wonderful one night stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2014

Travelling round Bali and the more remote places, we decided to spend one night in the city of Ubud to check out the shopping and bars. We had been staying mostly in very low budget accommodation and paid a little more for this one, but still reasonable at £30 for the night with breakfast included (and think we chose a superior double for that price, so there are cheaper rooms on offer) Check in was at 2pm but we arrived very early at 10 am (we had allowed extra time to negotiate the roads as getting lost had been our forte until now) anyway no problems, staff let us check in early at no extra cost. The room was lovely fresh and clean. Bathroom was very nicely decorated. The pool area is beautiful and set in lush green gardens. The main reason we chose this property was the short distance to the center. A ten minute walk (maybe 15 mins if you don't march like me) and you are at the market and right in the hub of the city. The staff served breakfast on our balcony in the morning. Fresh fruit salad, eggs, toast, coffee and juice. Lovely staff, very nice rooms, super comfy big bed and easy to get to the center of Ubud. Bottom of the street, turn right and then its one straight road to the market. Would definitely stay here again. Oh and not only soap in the bathroom but also little sealed travel toothbrushes and toothpastes, nice little touch.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2014

We stayed in Ubud for 3 nights last December. The choice for booking this accommodation was made based on the TripAdvisor reviews and also the booking site reviews.

The good:
- I liked the idea of cottages, the possibility to serve the breakfast or a coffee in frond of your cottage;
- The outdoor landscape is simply amazing, a lot of green plants and trees;
- The pool was also great - actually they have 2 pools, infinity pool like;
- The room was large and clean;
- A very quiet place to stay and relax.

The bad:
- In the room, but most in the bathroom, there was an awful smell - we tried to keep the door open for some time but the smell was still present. My guess is the smell came from the bathroom, because there it was more intense;
- The management needs to invest some money in the bathroom - comparing the overall look and feel and also the quality of the room with the bathroom, there is a very big discrepancy; we also encountered some problems with the toilet;
- They need to buy new towels because the ones in the bathroom were old; also, during our stay, the towels were never changed;
- Poor breakfast: coffee or juice, 2 slices of bread with butter and marmalade, and eggs; all 3 days we had the same menu;
- The location is a little far away from the Ubud center.

If there was no smell issue in the bathroom&room, the bathroom had other conditions and they had some now towels, I would have given an "Excellent" rating for my stay.

We stayed in the private pool villa for 5 nights and it really is great value for money. Large villa with enormous bathroom. Nice outdoor area with great pool, shady eating area and a big fridge. Only 5 minutes walk to main road, 10 minutes to Ubud Market. Really enjoyed our stay here. Not many rooms so most of the time you would have the pool to yourself so private pool not really necessary, but a nice treat.

I booked and paid for the pool villa,only to get an email the next day to say that it was booked out. They offered a deluxe room,which we declined as we wanted to stay in a private pool villa.
The trouble started When I asked them to give me a refund as it was their error.
apparently it was the computer system that emailed confirmation and request for payment!!!
They said they were unable to give me a refund and kept trying to get me to book something else.
There is a Commonwealth Bank in Ubud which they could have deposited my refund, but after several emails(16) they said I would have to pick up the money and that it would not be what I paid as they would only refund what they received after bank charges.
I paid $250 USD and transfer fees of $25 and they are only going to refund me about $230 AUD

It may be a nice place,but the booking system is obviously a problem and the fact that they made the error and it is still going to cost me about $45 + the cost of arranging for the money to be picked up from Ubud is pretty poor

We stayed three nights at Alas Petulu and it was great, we had the double room with facilities but since it has it's own terrace and pavilion area for breakfast you can feel like you are the only guests. The walk to the main street is perefectly easy and lit at nights and there is lots of choice of places for meals and refreshments. The owner Made is very helpful and friendly as are his family and the staff. He gave us lift early one morning to allow us to do a walk through the rice fields. The two pools are lovely and since one of the cottages has it's own pool you have lots of peace to relax.

Alas Petulu Cottages is located about 400m off the main street of Ubud town. When you walk out of Alas Petulu, turn right and walk straight on. At the end of the street is the main street. The walk is safe even at night. We booked the 1 bedroom pool villa and it was wonderful. Upon checking in, we requested for a in room massage service and our request was granted. We had the massage by our pool. Breakfast was done at the kitchen in the villa. We just had to leave the door/gate open for the staff to come in and cook for us. There are other type of rooms at the premise and they look cozy as well, as well as an outdoor pool. This place is so private although there are other guests there. Would definitely recommend this place but the pool villa may not be suitable for children as the pool is very deep for a kid. Only one thing they can improve on is the mattress and pillows which seem a bit old. Other than that, it's perfect.

Unfortunately we only stayed here for one night. I stayed with my husband and 14 year old son. It is located a couple of hundred metres off the main drag (turn right and walk another couple of hundred metres to the markets), but it is a nice, quiet walk. The grounds are beautiful, with lush gardens and a lovely stone path down to the pool area; a small pool above with waterfall flowing into a larger pool below, surrounded by what looks like forest. We stayed in the family room, one bedroom downstairs, one up with a balcony. Clean, usefully furnished and good wifi. Hated leaving. Next time will stay longer. Lovely staff.

Room Tip: All the rooms looked to be quite private
