I booked this hotel with trepidation. There aren't many reviews after all and what was I going to expect from a place called "...Private Boutique health & Leisure Centre"?
Boy was I blown away right from the start. The 5 star service started when we emerged from the arrival gates. We were greeted by friendly hotel staff. We left the staff waiting for another hour while we grabbed a quick lunch at the airport before embarking on the long car ride to Ubud. When we finally could get going, the staff was still all smiles. After climbing into the APV, he introduced himself, asked for our names and served us cold towels. This was followed by chilled bottled water.
Along the way, our friendly driver (Arya) pointed out local sights and villages to us. When we arrived in Ubud, our car turned right into a narrow driveway and left the busy world behind. Unfolded before us was the iconic semi-circle gateway on KajaNe Yangloni's website. What a world of difference. More hotel staff came to greet us as we disembarked, and helped us with our bags. One of the staff said he would bring us straight to our rooms. What could be more pleasant than that after a plane and car ride?
The hotel manager, Artana, showed us to our "rooms". Along the way, we were greeted by the lush padi field that sits right in the centre of the entire compound. The open air, greenery and quietness of the hotel was filled with our Ooohs and Ahhhs. Our rooms were little huts literally. I booked 3 Bale Villas, and they looked exactly like the pictures on their website. 3 little wooden huts on stilts. There were koi fish in the pond under the villas. Inside the wooden villa, it was rustic and charming. The bed was very comfortable and clean, as with any other 5 star hotels. As this is a wooden hut, the flooring is all naturel teak. I could tell its very clean because even Artana the hotel manager and the porters removed their shoes at the bottom of the short flight of steps before entering the room. Unlike standard hotel rooms where the staff simply walk in and out with their shoes on. The bathroom was quite a stunner. Outdoor stone tub, koi fish below and fresh cool breeze every time nature calls...no nasty odour for the next toilet user.
The breakfast was fantastic. Mind you, this is not the usual buffet breakfast with 1 or 2 live stations, food that has gone cold or cereal that has gone soft. Every morning we called room service to have our breakfast served on our porch, no extra charge. We ordered the American and English breakfast for 3 mornings straight! I don't usually like American breakfast, bacon and sausage is not exactly my kind of breakfast. But this was yummy and well balanced. Yummy toasts, baguettes, eggs, fresh juices, sausages, fruit salad, bali coffee with fresh air, lovely padi view and "good morning" greetings from the staff that would walk by. My 1 year old loved to sit on the steps of the villa and share her toast with the koi below. What a great way to start the day.
The tea snack at KajaNe was equally memorable. One of the days we got back to the room around 4.30pm to enjoy our complimentary foot massages. We thought we had missed the afternoon tea. As soon as we opened the doors to our rooms, the hotel staff was already at the foot of our villas ready to serve us tea on the porch! The massage although complimentary was very good, we were pleasantly surprised.
Every evening we would return to the room to find that the mosquito coil had been lit, the bed has been done and covers turned. I've read plenty of reviews about expecting mosquitoes at padi fields, creepy crawlies at nature-themed hotels etc. At KajaNe, there was only pleasant dreams and ZERO mozzy bites. At night, we could hear the frogs croak and jump into the pond.
The shuttle service to ubud town was on demand, not according to a fixed scheule. The car would be ready in 15 mins to take us to town. We had a local prepaid card which we used to call for the car to pick us up promptly. The hotel is about 5 mins from the town centre, away from the noise yet close enough to get to.
The only regret was not staying put in KajaNe Yangloni for our entire bali trip. We moved to Legian Beach Hotel on the last day. The cost of both hotels were the same (Kajane was on special offer) but the standard and quality were worlds apart. We were definitely bitten by mosquitoes at Legian Beach Hotel.
The only downside of KajaNe Yangloni was the lack of internet booking. I corresponded with the hotel admin for 2 weeks via email. The staff requested for photocopies of my credit card and passport. I rejected the request for a copy of my credit card although I did furnish details in order to secure the booking. I didn't feel comfortable that I was made to email such documents. I didn't get a confirmation until 1 week before departure. I hope KajaNe will come up with an easier way soon.
Definitely a place for a memorable experience, a world apart from the run of the mill hotels. It is also a great place for family, safe and clean, no busy lobby or roads.
Villa 4 is slightly smaller than 2 and 3.
