How do you review a restaurant that is great 8 out of 10 visits! They have some unresolved quality control (ie consistency) issues in this place (maybe 2 times out of 10) - depending on who is preparing your drinks and food, - it may be unbelievably delicious, or it may not!
For example: the chocolate Mylk (sic) shake - made with coconut icecream and cashew milk (which I order with mint) is my go-to drink -I've had it maybe 7 times this trip! But today, it was...well...yucky! Not cold, not thick, not chocolatey, not ANYTHING. So I sent it back, and it came back as utterly delicious and full of flavour as it could be (and always is)! So I asked the waitress in charge why? She said because different staff make things differently! I pointed out how problematic this is when attempting to keep up a consistent standard. She agreed and said she'd talk to the staff, but not everyone likes their milkshakes cold and thick. I suggested that actually pretty much everyone enjoys their chocolate milkshakes chocolatey, cold and at least a little thick! (the way it came all those other times)
Anyway moving on from mylkshake, the food is so healthy (tasting) and delicious - I love the Quesadilla with feta, sundried tomato and homemade basil pesto (but there again, one time it had almost no fetta, corrected upon sending it back!)
Have enjoyed their (practically healthy tasting) French fries, the Tuna fillet burger, the
Breakfast burrito etc.
But for me, the thing that defines Clear Cafe is their truly extraordinary range of drinks - so many wonderful concoctions! So many many tantalizing options, it's pretty damn hard to choose!
As far as vibe, it is teetering on the brink of a vegan-style of trendy that turns my stomach - ie unfortunately it attracts a few too-cool-for-school types - and perhaps that's why they play so much awful soul-less Ibitha style 'cool' music (acid-jazz?) , which really gives me the sh***s! On a couple of occasions they've veered away from this with some Latin music and even some classical music, which made me very happy indeed! Notwithstanding, the place has a really nice feel, does also attract some really interesting people, and has a really nice toilet.
Wifi is excellent (though that does attract the trendoids to sit mooching with their laptops). On a side-note, I personally do not enjoy the compulsory removing of shoes before entering, but when in Rome...
The prices are cheap by Australian standards, but fairly pricey by some Balinese standards (when you factor in the excessive 20% tax) - so the forementioned mylkshake for example is about Aus$3.50 - still pretty reasonable value for what it is.
In closing, Clear Cafe is most definitely worth a visit - and like me - you may just get addicted to their drinks - just don't be shy to send anything back if it's not as described, or not as mindblowing as the time before!
