“What is all the fuss about?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2010

Went there for lunch a couple of days ago - they have relocated from their original location near the Palace to what seems to be a larger place further back from the main-road. The service was pretty quick once we got there. Food is served in wicker baskets lined with disposable wax-paper sheets (plates?). The menu is basic/limited - pork meat only, pork meat with rice special (you get a small piece of fried sausage and various other unrecognisable fried parts of a pig - didn't try them) and some other combinations. The amount of meat you receive is very limited but for the price it is hard to complain. The meat tasted fine - nicely spiced - you also get some spiced chopped and cooked vegetables - but nothing to write home about. Not really worth the trouble I would say. On the other hand make the effort to get to Sari Organic right in the middle of rice fields - you will not want to leave - we didn't :)

“Hand Service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2010

OK! ...So once you have got over the fact that you are eating suckling pig in one of Bali's nicest villages, time to get real. Its pork and it interesting, but that's about it. There are two Ibu Oka branches, one right in town in Jalan Suweta, near the Palace, and another near Mas, on Jalan Raya Teges. Both restaurants are consistent in one way, appalling hygiene. Personally I can no-longer eat there, its disgusting to watch the staff ripping the pork apart with their bare hands and assembling into portions, and shuffling it around till evenly distributed. On the last of my visits I watched a member of staff moving the crackling about with one hand, whilst holding a mobile phone in the other into which he was talking. Eventually the mobile went back into his pocket and then he continued arranging the food with both hands, basically it was disgusting. In short, if you like pork and bacteria fine, but the management is non existent, the staff untrained and indifferent, bordering on obnoxiousness, and the standard of cleanliness is insulting.

“Yuk!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2010

We ate here as a group of 4 in november after reading a review about it in an airline travel guide. Well it has either gone way down hill or we got there on a particularly bad day. yes it is cheap and authentic but it is also dirty and there wasn't much actual pork and I am not even sure what one of the other things on my plate was. The service is terrible and they look at you as if you are putting them out by coming in. I also wasn't impressed with a dog sitting between me and my friend in the "restaurant" trying to get scraps. Four of us went for lunch and the girls couldn't even bring themselves to try the pork due to the appearance and lack of hygiene in this place and then the waitress looked at them in disgust and disbelief when they only ordered rice. We ate at numerous restaurants around Bali and this was the only really bad experience that we had. I shudder whenever I even think back about this place

“Suckling Pig experience?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2010

After having a taxi driver who had no idea where Ibu Oka actually was in Ubud. We went to the tourist office at the corner of Jl Monkey Forest and Jl Raya Ubud and were suprised to find that it was directly accross the road (diagonally opposite the Ubud markets). They were doing drainage/road works right in front of Ibu Oka, so you had to negotiate accross a narrow plywood plank. We got there about 10:45 and there was only a few vacant seats (although they have a pretty quick turnover so in the morning you don't have to wait too long). The appearance of Ibu Oka is fairly rustic - you can either sit at normal tables and chairs in the front or you can also sit on the floor at low tables inside the bale (pavilion) at the rear.
There is only a limited selection on the menu - roast pork, pork rind or the special (roast pork with rice and spiced veggies) all served on paper plates. It aint fancy but its cheap. The special is 25,000 (about $3 AUS). One thing we did notice was that the locals serve was larger than the tourists serve but at those prices you can order a second serve if you were still hungry. The rind wasn't as crispy as I am used but the seasoned pork meat was delicious. Worth visting if you are in Ubud.
