“Good Budget stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2012

We stayed at this hotel for because it was part of a flight-hotel package that was cheaper than the flight alone. Here is what I observed:
- A Hotel off the beach in a central (North/South way) of the Sanur beach area.
- Very nice grounds with trees flowers and 2 nice pools
-Rooms were clean but the cleaner they used was strong and if arrived shortly after cleaning it was a bit intense. Might bother some but it told me they really cleaned. It was gone in a couple hours
- Bathroom needed remodelling. Toilet and tub are stained from being old. Sink is OLD. Bathroom is huge! Careful not to slip on the wet floor like I did. But I felt it was clean.
- The room itself is large! Queen Bed was comfortable, lot of storage area,
-TV is small CRT and has no English but BBC. Watched a little for fun one night while getting into bed. I didn't really care that it was poor.
- Wake up calls were ten minutes late. So I just adjusted my request and they were on time
- Room has no fridge so rented one for $3 a day (worth it)
-Room has no safe, no hair dryer and no coffee or tea. However coffee and tea are available during breakfast and we took it back to our room, and you could borrow a hair dryer from the front desk but then needed to return it right after use.
-room has desk with large mirror, dim lighting, two wicker chairs and coffee table, two night stands.
- Window between bathroom and bedroom so you can see your room mate shower and use the sink. The toilet is around the corner and not visible. No way to cover this window up. We didn't mind as we are married but others may.
-Air conditioning worked great and with 44C humidex we needed it. Note the bathroom has an area that is permanently open in the roof which is very nice but ruins the AC. We kept the bathroom door closed at all times . this kept our room kept a great cool temperature.
Outside - Veranda was nice with a towel clothes rack to dry wet stuff, two chairs and coffee table. Never used the pools as we preferred the ocean but they seemed great and clean.
-Wifi available for $1 a day. We were lucky as we were straight across for the lobby and could get a connection on our veranda and on occasionally in the room if right by the window. I am guessing 80% of the hotel would only get the wifi at the lobby or in the hotel. Speed was acceptable considering it is Bali. I saw many people using video SKYPE in the lobby and it was working fine.
- Lots of stray cats - but this is Bali
-Staff could not have been nicer or more accommodating.
-Breakfast was fuel and no more. Basic and not too good but not BAD tasting just blah and after two weeks really blah. Orange juice was watered down Mcdonalds juice from what I could tell. Totally good enough to get some energy in the morning but not memorable.
To get to the beach was a small issue. Not a big one but realize you need to cross to the beach past a resort some how. We did it but carrying beach stuff in a shopping bag and acting like we stayed there which usually worked but if you were obvious they kicked you out leaving at least 10 minute walk to the official access street. We like to walk but a couple time if you want to go to the beach for an hour and it takes 10 minutes to get there it when it is essentially across the street it is a bit time consuming. Coming back wee always cut through a resort as they could not tell if you stayed there or not. By the time you go tot the main gate it was pointless for them to kick you out and said nothing.

We did on two mornings hear a lizard in the walls running around but he was not in the room. I think you could have that the Hilton though as it is Bali. Was not an issue for us.

IN summary we enjoyed it and found the location excellent with the exception of beach easy access. Clean, felt safe, good service but nothing fancy. On budget - this a great hotel to consider.

We have already stayed in the Bumas three times now and we'll be back in November 2012 for our fourth spell!
We return because of the staff, location and chilled-out atmosphere you find lazing around at one of the two pools. The rooms are always clean and the towels although not new are always clean and available. There is always plenty of room at the pool.
Other reviews don't read kindly but you get what you pay for but with the added bonus of 1st class staff with their winning smiles.
Nothing is ever too much trouble for the staff - they always remember us and make us feel completely at ease and at home. Give it a try - you'll love it

This hotel was part of a good overall package out of Vancouver,BC. Have to say the hotel was a big disappointment. Grounds were very nice; large pool. Perhaps the hotel was nice in its day; however, it is in need of upgrading big time. The rooms were clean but dark. Bathroom had a blue energy efficient bare lightbult in it and the bathtub had a telephone type shower with no curtain. Toilet had a tendency to run and needed to be prodded to stop. Staff not overly welcoming and mgr. somewhat inflexible. They offered one tiny round bar of soap to last until it was gone and would not give out a second one for the bathtub. (we used our own and left it there). Towels were gray colored and no washcloths. We had to ask for handtowels each day and they weren't automatically left in the room. Although we had asked for twin beds, there weren't any in the whole place. Breakfast - sparse, had to ask continually to replenish juice, coffee and Dutch pancakes were on the menu EVERY day, buffet style. I would not call this a 3 star hotel. Central location was good and other restaurants and beach, very walkable.

We booked this hotel as part of a 3* package for our honeymoon. Can't comment on what others say about it being a bit of a bargain as for us, it wasn't. Our other two hotels in Bangkok and Phuket more than met our expectations even though we were on a fairly tight budget - we are quite happy to stay in 3 star accomodation and have a bit more to spend. However under no circumstances could the Bumas Hotel be classified as a 3* hotel, or even a 2*. Where to start? Towels in the room were a bit of a lottery - some days we got more than others but they were never white, although they were clean and there was often a delay between them being taken away and replaced (3-4 hours!!). Pool towels always seemed to be in short supply and were stained but clean. The room was dark and the sheets were again, a bit grey and frayed, although clean - someone had clearly 'thrown' something up our walls as they were marked. A bar of soap constituted toiletries - bring your own everything! One day the water from our bath and toilet was 'black' for a time - we wrote to our travel company but no explanation has been forthcoming. Breakfast was again a lottery, if there was coffee, there were no cups, if there was juice there were no glasses. Bizarrely, we always seemed to get 1 teaspoon per table??!! I could go on, (and on) but for whatever reason, the hotel is not being managed properly and understandably the staff are unhappy and not particularly helpful. Yes, the place is apparently a bargain and full most of the time. But in my opinion, if you are going to make the effort to go all that way, pay a bit extra (I wish we had) and have joyful memories of your time in what is a most beautiful and interesting island.

Hotel is clean and staff are ok, not over friendly but polite all the same. Room was clean but the breakfast was pretty awful. No problem, we just ate at the crazy parrot (Irish style pub) not far away. Two swimming pools, 10 mins walk from the beach. Hire yoursef a fridge - cold drinks are always a bonus. T.V in your room is mainly unwatchable so a good book would be best. Watch out for the local taxi drivers, they rip you off really badly !!! don't give them chance eh. Bali Hyatt hotel is a short taxi ride away, fantastic place, they love visitors and you are more than welcomed. It is on the beach and they have all day tea, coffee, cocktails and a lovely evening menu - plus nightly entertainment. You can get an all day taxi for just $20, this includes the petrol and the driver, don't pay any more ! Plenty of bars and restaurants around there - enjoy. Beware though, Local stats reported in the Sanur Weekly newspaper state that 54,000 people were bitten last year by dogs (rabies is a problem there), 54,000 is a hell of a lot of bites !!

We enjoyed our stay 2 weeks in January at The Bumas Hotel. Don’t expect any luxuries and you won’t be too disappointed. On the entrance to the Hotel, much more could be done for a first impression, no frontage as such just an old unused tatty grey door with an open reception to the side, covered by plants.

Our room was on the 2nd floor and was enormous with a 4 poster bed, large bathroom with corner bath and a big balcony. The room was cleaned every day, fresh towels and the bed made and turned down. The sheets were rather tatty and towels were grey rather than white - they really need to be renewed and it was a bit off-putting at first, but they were all perfectly clean.

The gardens of the Hotel could do with a major prune as lots of leaves fell into the 2 pools at night and sometimes they weren’t cleared the next day, however, the pools were cleaned most days and sunbeds and towels not a problem. We asked for a safe which was in reception and had to leave a deposit, if you loose the key you don’t get the deposit back, otherwise it was free. We also asked for a fridge which arrived straight away - £3 per day.

There is no bar at the Hotel, just a cold drinks cabinet with cans and bottles of lager in reception. The breakfast wasn’t very inspiring, although you can take your own marmalade etc to the table and they don’t mind; if you ask for Bacon it’s not included in the price. If you go out to the main street there are many cafes, bars, and restaurants; we recommend you turn right and you will almost immediately come across The Mona Lisa, which is a café by day and restaurant by night and was absolutely lovely and cost us about £2 each for full breakfast, and dinner was less than £5 each. Don’t pay for WiFi in the Hotel, most of the cafes/bars have free WiFi and, believe me, there are many to choose from!

There are lots of Laundry signs in the main street, about 12 items of clothing ie trousers, shorts, skirts, tops etc, all perfectly washed, dried and ironed in a day for less than £3 in total - amazing! It did rain while we were in Sanur and we saw the most amazing thunder storms, the hotel grounds flooded and large cat fish were swimming around in the water, apparently they live under the soil and appear when the ground floods, no worries they’re just like big fish!

All of the staff at the Bumas were lovely they couldn’t do enough for us and always acknowledged us in passing. Having given my views of the Hotel and Sanur – yes, I would stay at the Bumas again.

We met a couple staying at the Hyatt Regency at the end of the Beach, we visited their hotel, plush restaurants, pools, enormous beautifully tended gardens and right on the beach, but they paid nearly £1,000 more than us and we had an additional 3 nights in Bali (and an extra night in Singapore). Vis a vie you get what you pay for!

Room Tip: Ask for a corner suite - huge!
