We'd read a little about this place form a guidebook, looked it up as it was about a mile from our hotel along the beach, and we were astounded at what we found. We spend a lot of time in galleries and are familiar with lots of North European artists, but Le Mayeur was completely new to us both.
Getting to know a little of his art was embellished by the fact that we did so in his home of many years, which his Balinese wife bequeathed to the nation whilst she was still living there. The freedom to walk unhindered in this intimate museum was incredible, the story of the Le Mayeurs, their meeting when she was a young girl and their lifelong relationship, was touching; it was a real privilege to visit and savour this place and the art.
