“Sanur's Hidden Gem.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

Our overall experience was outstanding.

Upon making the booking the prices were fair and correspondence with the Sudamala was swift and helpful. We had booked a transfer from the airport for our arrival which was priced on pay with local transport. We arrived to Bali late due to a delayed flight and our pickup was ready and waiting with a smile. The vehicle was very clean and the driver super friendly offering a cold towel and water for a quick journey to Sanur.

Arriving at the Sudamala was a confusing episode for us. I was expecting to check in at a foyer of some description but it was conducted under a outdoor gazebo on the street with a welcome drink. It was a nice touch and something totally different. From there we were led to our room with help from our new friends.

We booked the cheapest option with the Sudamala and we were surprised by the luxurious standard of the room. We were in room 121 on the top floor with court yard and main road views. We were initially worried about the noise but found it to be minimal except for the nightly entertainment at the Sudamala Restaurant which finished at 10pm/ It shouldn't be a issue because if you are going to bed at that time you are either soft or old. Our room had all the luxury trims, massive comfy bed, free bottles of water, massive bathroom and shower, brilliant balcony with plenty of space and was maintained twice during the day by the staff.

The restaurant had a good range of food items although a little pricey considering the other offerings in the local area. The breakfast was a good option in the morning with good service. During the morning service there were two employees playing traditional bamboo xylophones but I found it very annoying the morning especially when the the weather was hot. We ate at the restaurant once for dinner and we found the meals very tasty. My only negative about the dining experience is that the portion sizes are quite small. Do not order the pancakes as they are the size of a pringles cap if you're hungry!

The overall charm and vibe of the Sudamala is where it excels. The entire complex offered a relaxing feel and I often commented to my partner that I could barely walk up the stairs as my muscles were so relaxed! We are both fitness fanatics but the Sudamala knocked all the puff out of our training program, we did nothing for 5 days! Most of this nothing happened by the pool area. It was very quite and comfortable with the hotel frequently changing towels and ensuring we were all ok. This area also has a yoga area which my partner enjoyed and found challenging as a frequent yoga participant back home. The day spa is also in the area but we opted for outside spas due to the very high price at the Sudamala.

Upon leaving we were sad to go. The service continued until we left where the staff organised a good value and comfortable transfer to Ubud. Generally we could not fault the Sudamala, it is off the main streets and general resort area of Sanur which is perfect. I would not recommend this resort for families because I would like to return to the Sudamala as a couple, it's perfect for couples.

Thank you Sudamala for making our Bali stay beautiful!

Room Tip: I personally would go for a bottom floor due to mosquito issues.

Dear Mr/Mrs. IntraVol,

Many thanks for sharing your experience staying at Sudamala Suites and Villas. We’re glad you liked it. Your detailed comments were most useful and we have made changes based on them, particularly regarding the pancake, which was a mistake and has been corrected.

The Sudamala is a relaxing oasis. When you pull up from the street you aren’t quite sure what you’ll find behind the doors…a very high quality and luxurious hotel with a high standard of service.

Not long open, everything feels new and is very clean. Our garden deluxe room was large with a gorgeous open air shower and our own fenced courtyard. Little touches went a long way such as free bottles of water and lighting mosquito coils. The staff were quick and responsive, for example the door to our bathroom was sticking – we mentioned it on our way out to dinner and by the time we retruned, it was fixed. Good job too as you need as much protection from the mosquitoes as possible! We didn't get bitten but there were a lot of them.

The garden is immaculately maintained and the pool area was fantastic – very quiet, great sunshine and lovely size and temperature. We both booked in for spa treatments which were good but very overpriced considering the offerings on the surrounding streets: my boyfriend went to a little place next door to the hotel for a Balinese massage: it was 7 times cheaper and in his opinion, much better. If you want a true spa experience then the hotel’s offering is exactly that but expect to pay more.

The spa / hotel also offered free yoga on Monday, Wednesday and Friday which my boyfriend particularly enjoyed.

We had read that there is an area on the beach allocated to the hotel but we couldn’t find it and heard other guests say the same thing. Having walked along the beach, the pool is much nicer anyway.

With its newness, you can tell that some things are still being finessed: the breakfast service was sporadic….very slow for the first few days and then on our last two days there was a buffet breakfast which was actually much better. I ordered the same thing for three mornings but each time it was slightly different. Everything is done with a smile however so unless you are in a massive rush, sit back and relax.

We didn’t have dinner in the hotel but did have lunch around the pool a couple of days: good food, good portions but at hotel prices, for example, we had Satay at Sudamala for about £3-4 but across the road it was £1.The hotel arranged a car to take us across to Tanah Lot and all their prices were on a par with local taxis.

We spent 7 days chilling out at the Sudamala and felt very relaxed thanks to the surroundings and staff.

Staying at Sudamala was a perfect start to our holiday from the welcoming drink and friendly staff it just got better. The rooms are clean and modern, beds amazing, so comfortable and the bathroom is spacious. sudamala is very stylish and has a great ambience about it, you immediately feel, relaxed and nothing is a hassle for the staff, who, are so warm and friendly. We took advantage of the bikes, knowing we could drop into the pool or book a massage at the spa..although not beach frontage, we didn't feel we missed a thing.. Highly recommend

To start, let me say that the hotel looks very nice and is obviously new. The staff were nice and the place was clean. However, there were a couple of things that made this an average experience:

Our room had an outside toilet. Now I get the whole outside shower thing and think that is a nice touch, but the toilet outside as well?? It just doesn’t work especially as we were on the ground floor and only 10 feet away from a main walk way back from the pool! Plus the door that led from the outside area to the dressing/washing area was a glass door that neither locked nor created a seal. This led to the next problem.

Mosquitos!!! This place has a problem. I have stayed in many places in Bali and have never had the level of mosquitos that we had in this hotel. Because the door to the outside area did not seal, it was impossible to keep them out. We were killing 10-15 per day on average. Yes the smoke ring they lit most evenings helped, but I still got bitten more than I ever have before!

Is this a hotel, restaurant or art gallery? The place just didn’t seem to know and as such has not really succeeded in being any of them.

It was a shame as we were looking forward to this part of the trip and I certainly expect more for the price (by Bali standards).

Sudamala was a gorgeous hotel, the bed was soo comfy, the rooms were tastefully decorated and there was always someone available to attend to your every need. The beautiful pool area and complimentary yoga were highlights. Although it is not based right on the beach, the complementary bikes make the beach easily accesible. Highly recommend this beautiful hotel.

From the second we arrived the staff were very friendly and we felt very relaxed. The pool is lovely and the rooms have everything you would need. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The breakfast was the best we have had in a long time and the library and business centre is great with really fast internet. Would highly recommend, thank you for a lovely stay.
