“Mostly Amazing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

This hotel was stunning! Our room was absolutely beautiful and very Balinese in style. The property itself was also gorgeous and very relaxing. The service was great and the breakfast was delicious. The pool was beautiful as well and since it's not a huge resort, it never felt over-crowded. They also offer fantastic yoga classes in the spa area and you can even pay for a private yoga lesson.

There were at lot of mosquitos in the evening here and the bathrooms are open-air with no real closed-in window. Because of this the staff would burn mosquito coils in the bathroom at night which was very cloying and made it difficult to sleep. Ask them not to and I'm sure they'd oblige. Other than that, I would highly recommend this place.

Room Tip: Ask them not to burn mosquito coils directly in your room.

Superb location, great restaurant on the street, fabulous food and not expensive. Rooms 2nd level good size, great bed, decor lovely. Pool service slow, not enough sun beds although they did say arriving, pool in sun all day for sun lovers. Not a real buffett breakfast as such however the breakfast menu is good, great omelettes. Book on the net as room charges are very high, great value from Agoda, all in all
A SENSATIONAL venue, highly recommend.

My husband and 10 month old daughter have just had a lovely week long stay at
Sudmala.

We got an early bird special and paid only $140USD for our deluxe courtyard suite (the entry level room). It was fabulous.... clean, spacious and a little bit luxurious. Great bed, a nice courtyard with a Balinese day bed outside and an open air shower and toilet. We didnt look at the more expensive rooms but we had ample space for the portacot etc, it was more the size of a studio apartment minus the kitchen than a hotel room.

Positives:
- very friendly and helpful staff.... Or maybe having a baby with us made this more pronounced. Our baby was warmly greeted by name by the staff everywhere we went.
- great coffee in the restaurant, which was included with the breakfast. We had two very respectable lattes every day, the coffee was definitely good enough to be served in a Brunswick St cafe.
- very nice toiletry products in the bathroom
- great room as mentioned already
- a decent location, 5 or 10 minutes walk to the beach, lots of eating options close by and a few small shops and street vendors
- a fairly impressive pool that was never too crowded, we were there in peak season and could always find a pair of sunbeds. It was sometimes hard to get poolside service for lunch or a drink as the service staff just came past occasionally.
- it's only been open 8 months so everything is nice and shiny new
- the day spa do great massages and facials, I had to book a day ahead to get an appointment so other guests were obviously enjoying it too

Negatives:
- no wifi in the rooms, but we were close enough to the pool to get it in the room anyway on the iPhone but not the iPad
- The rooms aren't very mosquito proof... as part of the turn down service every night the staff light coils and plug a thing into the wall to discourage them. We found the only thing that really worked was to spray the whole room with killer before bed (which we didn't like doing because of our baby), but even then a few survived. Unfortunately I think this is a fairly common problem in Bali because of the way the doors are designed. Our room also had a really high vaulted ceiling, so killing them all was near impossible.
- the rooster who lives next door is very noisy.... We kept wishing someone would eat him for dinner! One night a dog got in amongst the chickens and caused quite a ruckus. I believe the deluxe courtyard suites are the worst affected by the rooster as the doors face toward a vacant type lot where the chickens must live. It didn't bother my husband and I wore ear plugs, however the people next door to us were moved to a deluxe garden suite around the corner and were much happier and slept better.
- the restaurant put on a decent breakfast (and the coffee was excellent however the juice was not), but for dinner it's overpriced and not very impressive. There are loads of better options within 100m of the resort so we only ate there the first night. I feel a bit bad about bagging the restaurant as the staff were so nice, but the food let it down.

All in all we had a fabulous stay and would recommend this place to others, however be warned about the mozzies and the rooster!

Myself and Parner stayed at the Sudamala from the 5th to the 12th August. Whilst the hotel does not front the beach, it is only a short 5 minute walk away. The hotel and its gallery, spa, gardens and pool are all wonderful and the complex is peace personified. If you want to really relax stay here. What sets the hotel apart are the wonderful staff, who are so friendly and attentive and cannot do enough for their guests. It was my partner's birthday whilst we were there and the staff arranged some wonderful surprises. I had the opportunity to meet the owner Ben and must congratulate him for putting together such a wonderfull staff and for building such a lovely tranquil hotel. My only small criticism would be the same comment as ab_trom regarding the restaurant. Whilst the breakfasts are great and the lunch meals we had clearly showed the food was of good standard, the setting of the restaurant close to the road was not ideal. Perhaps more could be made of the lovely garden area behind or even tables set up around the pool? That said, I would not hesitate in recommending the Sudamala to all who travel to Bali and if you stay in Sanur do not stay anywhere else.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 322 which overlooks the pool and would recommend it.

We stayed here in august 2012. What a amazing place!! Lovely hidden gem, I think one of the best hotel in Bali. Staff are so friendly and nice, all of them!! The other negatives is the restaurant. The food was not so great and very small dishes. This resort is really good for couples, it is a very quiet and relaxing place. In the evening the restaurant should be around the gorgerous pool at the hotel instead of in front of the road, it would be perfect. You have to try the spa, very nice!

I can't say enough great things about this place. My husband and I have stayed all over the world and this hotel stands out as one of the very best,

The rooms are magnificent. Very in keeping with the Balinese motif/theme (the front doors ares stunning) but the rooms are equipped with all the modern conveniences and comforts that we are used to and enjoy having when we travel. These things are just handled artfully so you don't notice them and they don't stand out. For example, the outdoor shower is both very beautiful and very functional. I did not feel that we had to sacrifice any comfort or pleasure for authenticity.

The pool is gorgeous and I had a very wonderful midnight swim. We enjoyed the spa.
The restaurant had great music, fun chairs and we were able to sit and watch the world go by on the street. And the tables were set far enough back so we had some privacy.

The staff is incredibly helpful. The standouts were the manager Monica and one of the trainees Putri. We were very high maintenance during our stay; and they both, as well as the entire staff were extremely gracious and professional. We will never ever forget our wonderful stay at the Sudamala.

You really really need to stay here.

Fantastic hote,l everything is brand new, room very spacious beds and pillow super comfy. We had a garden view room with a nice outdoor area with its own Balinese cabana. In typical Balinese fashion staff are fantastic. Breakfast is also very good.

Only negatives would be the resturant for meals is not so great, serving sizes are small and quality is not so good compared to other options in the area. Also while the pool area is fantastic they would need more pool chairs if it was busy. Because its new the hotel was not so busy, however of it was close to its maximum capacity room by the
pool would be limited. Considering the hotel is not on the beach this would be a problem.

However these are things that can easily be fixed and the over all standard of this hotel is very high.

Also there is a" locals" resturant straight across the road ( not sure of the name) from the hotel, the food is great and super cheap about 10usd for food and a couple of beers. We ate there 5 or 6 times with no issues.
