“Sunari Needs Work”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2014

My team of 12 stayed in Sunari for three nights because our chosen hotel, almost next door, the Aneka, was full. The rooms were nice and the bathroom was open to the outside with plenty of privacy but the Sunari needs upgrade. We only paid less than $35 per night so it was not a bad price.

We booked a private pool villa here for two nights paying around AUS $150 per night which you might think was pretty good value for such accommodation. On entering our villa however I thought they almost had a damn cheek even charging that much!

Our villa was extremely run down and in desperate need of make over. It looked to me though that our traditional roof had recently been renewed so I’m guessing that perhaps a renovation of these little villas in on the way.

The air conditioner struggled against the heat and made a constant rattling noise. The furniture was old and tired, the bathroom was kind of an indoor/outdoor affair that was swelteringly hot! (I thought Lovina was way hotter than Kuta). There was a general air of utter shabbiness and disrepair about our villa.

I did ask if I could have a look at one of the deluxe rooms, but was told they were booked out (really?) and to come back later in the day. So I can’t comment about the rest of the rooms in the hotel.

Good thing we did have our own private pool, the general pool was being put to good use by the other guests and all the pool lounges were taken. This is a huge resort and must accommodate at least 150 guests but only have about 20 or so pool lounges. This is actually quite a common thing in Bali and I’ll never understand it! The main pool was very pleasant though and looked out over the beach and local fishing boats.

But we did really enjoy our little plunge pool, it was clean and wonderfully cool.

The breakfast was buffet style and one of the worst I’ve ever had in Bali. Scrappy on choice, we were a little late getting to breakfast on our first morning (although we were still within the allotted time) and they had run out of a lot of stuff with no effort being made refill anything. I even had to go ask for coffee, they had run out and seemed rather put out that I wanted some. The restaurant was being renovated and was stiflingly hot. They did have a brand new air conditioner in there but they didn’t want to turn it on.

Some of the staff had a really arrogant, unhelpful attitude here which is kind of unusual in Bali. We did try out the spa though and the girls were fantastic, very kind and helpful and we got a great massage for a very reasonable price.

Unfortunately there is not really a great deal to do up in this part of Bali if you have already done the snorkelling or diving nearby and the dolphin hunting (which I would strongly advise against – it is appalling!), which we had. There are few restaurants or café’s to choose from in this area and none of them really had any decent food.

Unlikely to return to this part of Bali and definitely not to Sunari. Has to be newer, fresher accommodation around better than this.

The hotel was just OK. It needs a good makeover. The rooms are showing signs if age and need to be updated. Some of the basics like the shower head was broken, a door did not open, all small things but for a hotel of this standard you would expect more than this. The palatial entrance was spectacular, but does not reflect what is hidden behind.

This was my very first private villa experience and what a treat it was. Fully enclosed villa with my very own swimming pool, cabana and pebbled outdoor shower with tropical landscaping throughout. Wonderfuly roomy interior with comfy bedding, and a huge pebbled waterfall shower. All of this and a mere short walk to the beach itself. We snorkled, swam with the dolphins which are small in size in comparison to California dolphins but much fun none the less. The menu was very limited yet provided with that beautiful Balinese smile. We went into town and participated in a full moon celebration, quite the ritual. It was a very enjoyable experience.

My wife are on our Honeymoon and half way into a month long trip here in Bali. The Sanuri Villas Spa Resort have been the only negative aspect to our trip so far.
We asked for a non smoking room and our room reeks of cigarette smoke and there was an ash tray in the room. We were assured that we recieved a non smoking room. Then every other place we have stayed has been more than willing to contact a motor bike rental company and have a scooter delivered for us. Not here. We were told to walk 2km up the busy street without an offer of a taxi.
Also my wife went to the front desk to place a call and was inappropriately stared at and made to feel very uncomfortable by a group of 50 or so business men at a confrence here. She will not walk the property by herself now.
And lastly we went to the resturant on site to eat lunch and not one of 45 tables were clean! As we looked around to try and find one we were informed that if we had a problem with the tour group in there we could eat some where else! The waiter nonchalantly tried brushing off a table which almost left it dirtier.
I would strongly warn ANYONE who is considering spending and money at this hotel. The staff is borderline rude, the enviroment not safe feeling with outside tours coming in and the service here is terrible.

We stayed three weeks in Bali and we spent two days at the Hotel Sunari Bali Villa. We enjoyed quality hotel for the reception of people, the environment of the place, for the comfort of the room. See pictures that confirm this comment.
