“Believe what you read - a wonderful, relaxing friendly place.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2010

Santhi is a wonderful place for any one wanting to explore the North of Bali. Their web site is a true reflection of the Villa and its garden and pool. The staff are all incredibly friendly and nothing is too much trouble.

Komang's cooking is superb and as good (if not better!!) than you will have in any restaurant - but also try some of the excellent restaurants in the area. Komang will also happily arrange for some one to drive and act as a tour guide and take you to those very special places only the locals know about, and for those who need to stay in touch there is also good wireless access!

The beach can be busy at the weekends, and you will find traders wanting to sell you pearls, wooden dophins and other souvenirs, but they are friendly and will go away if asked, but the major plus side of being by the beach are the dawns and sunsets across the Bali sea which are spectacular! (The sea is warm and it is like swimming in a well stocked aquarium!)

If you just want to relax, be throughly spoilt you couldn't find a better place which provides such privacy and high levels of personal service.- try it and enjoy it!!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2009

The villa is absolutely even more beautiful as it looks on the website. The villa itself - the architecture, the decoration, the lighting, the furniture, is all beautiful and carefully and thoughtfully designed. Often places look fantastic but lack functionality - not here. Everything looked gorgeous and was practical too. Then add to that the fabulous swimming pool and its immediate surroundings, and then the beautiful setting on the seafront....wonderful. And then the staff, who are lovely.

We especially loved - the enormous bath!! was AMAZING!!, massages at the villa, Ketut Susanna's wonderful home cooking, being served lovely breakfasts with freshly brewed coffee by the pool or on the tarrace, the astonishingly beautiful sunsets which were different every night, the gorgeous pool, enormous, spaceous rooms, huge comfy bed. Being surrounded by elegant, tasteful, individual beauty at all times.

So why have I only given it 4 stars? Because there were a few niggles, for me 5 stars is when something could not be any better. The thing that bugged me most is that I felt ripped off by a lot of the none included things, and my irritation increased because prices were not always set out clearly in advance. e.g. they offer that the cook will teach you how to cook any of the dishes on the menu. We assumed we would only have to pay the normal price of the food on the menu, which is actually very reasonable (3-5 Euros a dish). Instead we were asked to pay for the ingredients (not very much) and then 10 Euros per dish. We had selected 3 or 4 dishes, so this came to 30 or 40 Euros. That's a lot of money in Bali, and the cook would have been making the dishes anyway if we'd paid the menu price! We were also annoyed that we weren't informed in advance there would be an extra charge, and decided not to go ahead. The biggest rip off though has to be the dinner spectacular...they refused to give us any price indication until we had said exactly what menu we wanted - so we picked a menu and were then given a price of over 200 Euro!! And we'd only ordered a chicken! Imagine if we'd ordered a duck, or lobster...When we said there was no way we could afford this, they refused to give us a price for just the dinner. Instead they gave us a price for a sort of pared down spectacular, involving decorations and food, and offered it at 100 Euros. I thought it was absurdly expensive, but the tension this issue was causing was unpleasant, so we just agreed. It was not worth it....
Other issues - the drivers are very expensive by Bali standards, and they are NOT guides - we had assumed if we picked a tour from the brochure the driver would not only drive us to the places but also inform us about them when we were there - not so - so we ended wondering around places with no idea of the context, with a driver who could not help - frustrating.
One other point that bothered me only a little is that the villa is not as secluded as the website leads you to think. The balcony of the neighbouring property looks out over the pool area, and the beach is frequented by locals, especially on weekends and in early evenings, and most especially on early evenings on weekends - our first afternoon there was a Sunday, and local kids came, and sat around playing football and playing drums right in front of the villa. It was much less of an issue on other days, but some kind of warning from the staff that this was likely would have been handy.
Finally, on 4 nights out of the 8 we were there, we were woken at night at around 2am by music from a club/disco down the beach. Given the type of holiday we were after, this was not good for us. I entirely appreciate that the owners had no control over this, that it was a new establishment, and that the locals were trying to have it shut down asap - which I believe has now happenned, so I hope it won't be an issue for any other travellers.

Overall, we had a really wonderful time. We would sit by the pool, look around us, comment that we would never stay anywhere so beautiful again, and tell ourselves off for complaining about anything whatsoever! We felt very lucky and privileged to have stayed in this beautiful, wonderful villa. In fact writing this has made me want to go back right now! I would not want to put anyone off going here, but there are a couple of issues which I would have liked to have been aware of before going, and hopefully people will find this report useful. Please pm me if any questions.

It was by pure chance and luck we got to know about Villa Santhi. A real good luck!

Planning our second visit to Bali after a quick first stop in january 2007 we already new we wanted to see most of Bali experiencing different parts and areas. Lovina and the dolphins was among those. Also the desire of experience real Balinese-luxury living in a private villa during our trip. Quite early in this process of planning our trip I happened to see the web-site of Villa Santhi instantly making me very curious. Just to mention my profession is as a consultant in creating events, meetings and incentives so I normally know quite well what I am looking for.

What first struck me was the personal - yet professional - very friendly and helpful direct contact with the owners Komang and Andrew Blane. Our communication turned out to be quite long and detailed since our trip was quite complex and detailed with 10 different hotels and places visited in 24 days. Lovina/Singaraja and Villa Santhi was supposed to be the relaxing grand final of our trip. It certainly turned out to be more than what we expected!

Booking trips on the internet might not always be a pleasant experience. Especially in Bali many places has lost edge due to the crisis in travelindustry. We made a quick stop in Lovina just in the beginning of our trip swimming with dolphins together with friends that we travelled with for the first week. Luckily we ended up finding the only dolphin just outside Villa Santhi! Encouraged by this very quick aquintance with Komang and her fantastic Villa Santhi we knew that we would be back in paradise to complete or Bali-trip no matter what other experiences we would have during our next coming weeks taking us around Bali. This also proved the absolute honesty of Komang and Andrew in the way the present and sell their fantastic Villa Santhi - what was actually built by them for their personal and private use! I admire them for letting us - other people - so intensely share their dream and paradise! Villa Santhi is 100% what it is presented as on the web and yet even more. It is a dream come true! No excess luxury - but pure and honest service performed by people who really are concerned about your wellbeing, comfort and pleasure.

What makes all the difference - from my point of view - is the people. The crew of Villa Santhi. You feel from dawn to sunset that these people care about you as their guests. Not as clients and customers because you pay. Just because they care! That's real service to me! You can learn many things - but you need to give service from your heart.

This concern and care about your well-being goes like a red string through the entire Villa Santhi experience; the welcome, the setting, the arcitecture, the food&kitchen - always ready to fulfil your desires from french croissants in the morning to fresh lobster for dinner. Also a vast menu of things to do and see - everything carried out by the villa staff and veichles of great standard and condition. You feel in safe and good hands.

Small details as the personal story of Komang and Andrew and the Villa Santhi written in the guestbook, decoration of the house with thousands of Frangipanis upon arrival, flower garlands, fresh fruit juices, Balinese folklore-music performed by the night guard, Komang taking personal care of all the family- and house temples every day. Upon departure we received the most caring and concerning gesture - an album of our fantastic Villa Santhi! What an unforgettable memory always on our coffee-table at home.

Travelling around Bali Lovina might not be the most beatiful spot on the island. However the setting of Villa Santhi right on the black lavasand beach is marvellous. The sea is warm and the absence of big waves makes it wonderful for swimming. Right in front of the villa there is a great reef to explore snorkeling. Lots of fishes to see.
Also walking on the beach either towards Lovina or Singaraja allows you to explore ordinary Balinese life, genuine people and fishermen "villages" on the beach. People are very friendly, open and curious.

I went with our chef to the local market for shopping which was a great adventure. Quite impressed the way the do the shopping - but evenmore the quality of food processed in the kitchen. Especially the local dishes and fresh fish from the sea.

Since we had been moving around alot before arriving at Villa Santhi we mostly enjoyed just hanging around our fantastic home for almost a week. Wonderful days in total harmony - by the sea and the mountains. Spectacular views from sunrise behind the villa, volcanoes and ricefields to sunset in the shadows of Java. If paradise was a place - this could be it. Since paradise is more likely an emotion - this must be it! You have to try it!

All our warmest recommendations - Family Renmarker, Stockholm, Sweden with teenagers Rutger 15, Lea 13 and Estelle 11

I cannot recommend Villa Santhi highly enough. I'm not sure what to add to the other reviews except to say that this truly was the best holiday we've had and you should check availability and not go to Bali unless you can stay here. Andrew and Komang have created a unique piece of paradise where you will feel completely relaxed and spoilt. The Villa exceeded all expectations (already high from the excellant website pictures and videos) and the staff were friendly, attentive and welcoming. Service is personal but not intrusive, the Villa is a tribute to Andrew's vision and taste and we hope to return as soon as we can. Whether you want to stay by the pool and be spoilt in the luxurious surroundings watching the sunset over Java or visit the waterfalls, volcanos, temples and hot springs or take a boat trip to Lovina for dinner or see wild dolphins there is something here for everyone.

This is our second trip to Villa Santhi. We went in July 2008 to celebrate our friend Jackies 60th birthday. We liked it so much we went back this yeat and Bill and myself renewed our wedding vows in the Villa gardens and at night moved it all onto the beach. This is an absolutely fabulous Villa with a setting to die for and if any one wants to get married abroad or renew their vows as we did they could not find a better place. We shall be making a return visit in the near future.

After all the very positive feedbacks our expectations were pretty high - but they weren't disappointed. Villa Santhi is without any doubt one of the most beautiful places we've ever been to in our entire life.

In Denpassar we were greeted by Komang, the driver. From there to Lovina it's a three hours drive and the roads on Bali could certainly need some improvement. Not so Komangs driving skills. He's calm, relaxed, careful, friendly and with a great sense of humor. On our third day we had booked a day trip and Komang safely took us to the must see spots in Eastern Bali. Fortunately he avoided the tourist traps like Pura Besakih, Bali's largest temple, which is in the hand of the temple mafia and therefore not worth the hassle.

Back to Villa Santhi. What should I praise most? The food? The staff? The location?
Probably everything, but the wonderful people working there most definitely deserve being highlighted. You simply cannot think of anybody being more welcoming and caring than these folks. We were treated like royalties and pempered like babies.
The Villa itself doesn't need explanation, just visit their well-designed website, it tells the truth.

Was there anything we didn't like that much? Hmmmm, maybe two things.
The Villa is open to the public beach, so the people walking by can easily look inside. Given you're a privacy freak, that might be slightly disturbing at times. Actually we got used to it soon and didn't bother after a while.

The second aspect is actually not an issue but a good example of how much the guests are in the focus of everybody's interest and concern: there were no mosquito nets around the beds and we were actually bitten quite often and ended up in the small bunk bed room after hours of hunting.
We mentioned this to the friendly owner, and in the very second I'm writing this review he's installing the mosquito nets (I received an email this morning).

Well, there is probably no heaven on earth - but Villa Santhi comes pretty close.
