“A lovely stay at the end of a quaint road.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2011

This hotel has a wide variety of rooms as to price and amenities. From cold water and fan at $15.00 to four poster and all the trimmings at $60.00, we opted for a $40.00 and all still get to enjoy the gorgeous pool and grounds. The included breakfast features your own pot of Bali coffee with real milk and the staff is lovely. Right on the beach, a terrific spot to catch the early morning dolphin boat trip arranged by the hotel, or the trip for a most spectacular day of snorkeling. There are several great little restaurants and shops on the street as well. Price is negotiable (we discovered).

Almost across the road, try Warung Bali 9, a tiny restaurant with delicious food, unbelievably cheap prices and a delightful family you will want to see again. Nyman is also a very reasonable and dependable taxi driver for long trips.

I've stayed a Suma twice, the first time was the entire month of October 2009 and the second visit was October and November 2010. Suma is one of Bali's gems, a combination of beautiful architecture and five star service. The owners, Budi and Luh, are two of the nicest people I've ever met and have become very good friends. The staff always takes the time to wish you a good morning and offer an assistance you need during your stay. The ambiance is first-rate, Budi is the landscaper with such a talent for creating an atmosphere where one feels like their in paradise. The room rate comes with breakfast, the pool is a recirculating system using very little chemicals, and one can choose from a nice fan room up to the new addition which features large rooms with tub and shower. The rates are very reasonable but what makes Suma special is the extra treatment and attention by the staff to assure your stay is a memorable experience.

Remodeled rooms with beautiful grounds and pool. Great staff. Dolphins charters and snorkeling right on beach outside hotel. Lots of little restaurants on the street leading to hotel. Wonderful week long stay here.

I stayed in one of the new rooms at the hotel near the pool. It was spacious and very pleasant...the pool was lovely. It's hard to explain...but the hotel just lacked something!
It is apparently a family run hotel -- which would explain why the whole family utilised the pool. I would too if I owned the place -- however when one of the owner's children was doing bombies and splashing everyone around the pool causing me and others to leave...well??? The resident dog stole my shoe (I saw the funny side) and brekky was very low quality -- the worst I've ever had in Bali (orange juice OR coffee, one egg & toast OR plain pancake...where's the Nasi Goreng???).
A notice in the room said leave your key at reception when you want room cleaned so at 9-45am I leave my key. I return at 3pm tired after exploring Lovina...ROOM NOT CLEANED! Gosh -- that would be slack even by Aussie standards!!
It is a pleasant enough hotel...but just down the road about 50 metres is Hotel Melanum - cheaper price, nicer atmosphere and friendlier staff -- stay there instead!!

This hotel was the most aggravating experience on our 5 weeks on Bali. Clearly the recommendations in previous editions of German and English guidebooks have caused this place to let itself go. The service and quality in no way matches the price level.

The good sides:

- The place looks nice, garden and pool area are well kept and nice to sit in, as are the open air bar and restaurant.

- Location is good, not too far from the center of Lovina but in a quite street close to the beach with some nice Warungs.

The many bad sides:

- The "Economy Room" for 180.000 Rp. smelled of the mould that grows on the walls an the plastic curtain separating the bedroom from the bathroom. Mirror, Flyscreen and Fan were broken. The foam mattress was old and worn out, the sheets didn't seem very clean. The price does not justify this: Even in high season you can rent a decent bungalow in Lovina for 150.000 Rp.

- So we upgraded to a decent room with a view of the garden and the pool, however the bathroom had no vent and thus is constantly moist and smelly. At 280.000 Rp. this too was overpriced: As we found out, other hotels offer good AC rooms for 300.000.

- Friends of ours had a so called "Superior Room" for 450.000 Rp. which was smelly, dark and tucked away in the backside without pool or garden view and a claustrophobic porch.

- The pool water reeked of an acrid chemical substance that burned on the skin, the kids of a family we talked to even developed a rash.

- The staff is more keen on selling you overpriced diving and dolphin watching trips than on providing good service. (E.g.: Our laundry was returned when it was still wet. Dishes from room service were not taken away from our porch table for 2 days. Essential works such as the repair of a broken flyscreen were only carried out after we pointed them out several times.) They even try to prevent you from comparing prices by using tricks like telling you to decide *now* because "the office closes earlier today" (and of course we weren't supposed to tell any other guest about the "great" deal they offered us).The scooter they rented out to us had a flat tire and they only had it inflated when we refused to take it to a mechanic and have it done ourselves. Bus tickets and car rentals are much more expensive here than in town.

Sorry about your bad experience but we now have new and better trained staff looking after and cleaning of the rooms.

Our pool is clean and does not over use chemicals.

Our rooms are very reasonably priced for a centrally located hotel

Stayed 4 nights at Suma. The rooms where brand new, big and lovely. The garden was filled with small surprises, trees cut like snakes, frogs and other animals. The food was really great, and the athmosphere where great. We did really enjoy.

Some of the other reviewers already mentioned the hotel being UNDER CONSTRUCTION and that is STILL the case. As far as I'm concerned the hotel should be AVOIDED for the remainder of 2010. After that it is probably a nice place to stay, because the landscaping and pool are gorgeous, but now it's BIG NOISE THROUGHOUT THE DAY!
They are quite sneaky, because when we entered the lobby the we were asked to wait for someone to show us the room. When the room was showed no construction sounds were to be heard and they took us to a nice brand new room.
When we decided to stay they first of all used the 'don't tell the price you pay to the other costumers because they pay more' (which always makes me feel that we should have bargained more) and he asked us to pay for two days upfront (apparently I was sleeping, that it was a big clue of what was too come).
The minute we had paid and went into the restaurant for a drink all the workers returned to work (probably were asked to be quiet while we were checking out) and the an incredible noise could be heard throughout the entire grounds of the hotel for the remainder of the day.
The BEACH is also CRAP, and the center is also a 20 MINUTE WALK away!

To make the story complete, they try to sell you overpriced excursions from the moment you get in (fortunately we didn't bite), in the center we arranged excursions with a starting point for negotiation that was half the price of what the hotel started at.
