Stayed at the Westin for a week in early April. The resort is located on the beach in the heart of Nusa Dua, in a long strip of the other 4 to 5 star hotels. Had a basic Gardenview room that was perfectly acceptable. Was offered to upgrade to an Oceanview room at check-in that was a whopping extra $200 US per night!
The hotel gardens and grounds are meticulously well maintained.
The pool area is okay but is a little dated. It lacks the infinity pool overlooking the ocean that many of the newer establishments have. It has a private beach which is similarly very well maintained.
Breakfast buffet was included in our rate and this was generally very good. There was a separate guy cooking eggs, omelettes, pancakes and is Asian fare. There are not a lot of options in the immediate vicinity so if you can get a rate that includes breakfast I would recommend this. It is possible to order select dishes separately and two eggs were around seven dollars.
A couple of things stop this resort being great. It is a very family friendly resort, which may suit some people more than others.
Like many four and five star resorts, the prices for everything are ridiculous. Almost everything in the hotel costs 4 to 5 times what it does if you buy it from a local guy about a kilometre walk down the beach. A massage in the western spa is the best part of $85-$90, where as you can get it from a local person a few hundred metres down the beach at $15, in a scenic spot on the water. This started to become annoying.
On day one, I emptied the minibar onto the floor and filled it up with my own local purchases at a quarter of the price.
There were also a couple of issues with the service.
One of the hotel bars and restaurants is called Ikan. It directly fronts the beach and of an evening they lay out coloured beanbags and it's a very comfortable relaxing spot to lie on the sand and have a predinner cocktail. They have a happy hour between 5 and 7 PM making the drinks and tapas somewhat more affordable. We enjoyed an evening beverage here on most evenings but inexplicably on our last night, we sat on the beach and went to order the same drinks that we had on the previous seven nights and were told by a waiter that happy hour drinks did not apply to those consumed on the beach. This was despite having had them on the beach with other hotel guests for seven nights in succession! Despite our protestations to the waiter, another manager also said that happy hour did not extend to beachside drinks, even though we had photos of us c sharing the same happy hour drinks on almost every night previously! We finished up leaving and spending our money at a neighbouring resort.
The other problem we had was with the service desk when we went to book a bike eco tour, which are well established in Bali. In our research, it was clear which company was best but the service desk refused to assist us with the booking and kept trying to funnel us to an alternative tour, where not surprisingly the same program was triple the price. Clearly our preferred operator did not have a favourable commission deal with the hotel, because the girl on the service desk could not have been less interested in assisting us. It was only with some firm pressure and some graded assertiveness, that she finally assisted.
The final annoyance is the recurring problem of these four and five star resorts trying to ream you for in room Internet. Internet in the lobby was free and was satisfactory but the charges for Internet outside the lobby were ridiculous, Most of their competitors in neighbouring resorts had this included, as should the Westin.
Overall, it was a good stay in a somewhat dated resort but a few things stop it being a great resort
