3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

We are a family with two older teenagers and stayed in a family room, it was very dated and dark, and if your 6 foot tall or over good luck using the shower, the ceiling is so low I was hitting my hands shampooing my hair and I'm 5'7, definetley needs a renovation, however the lagoon pool access rooms below ours looked nice. The drinks and food we found a little expensive compared to other Bali locations, however they do have a 3 hour happy hour, and the in room fridge was so tiny buying some supplies of your own had to be done on a daily basis as not much would fit. The breadfasts are definitely more to a Japanese or european taste, very little cereal etc. The grounds were absolutley beautiful, the beach quite and clean, the pool area was great with lots of scheduled activities and lovely staff. The spa was beautiful and the service top quality, but it did come at a price. There's not a lot of choice of other eating places within walking distance and when we were there none of the advertised dinner buffets actually happened. It would be a great spot for honeymooners and people not wanting to leave the resort and just relax by the pool. If you want to do any water sports you have to travel 10min by car to the other end of the beach where its hectic and we were bustled in rushed thru our chosen sports and rushed out again. This means the beach in front of the Melia is lovely and quite but some paddle boarding or kayaking options would have been great.

Room Tip: Check out the Lagoon access rooms

Booked on hotel website, so got US$20 coupon PER DAY to use, with restrictions. Can use the coupons to eat in SOME of the restaurants (if you can find them open), the mini bar, the indoor lounge, etc.

Requested pickup at airport by hotel at US$20, but the hotel taxi didn't show up, though I had emailed arrival time at their request. This $20 is far too much to pay. Go to taxi stand in the airport and pay 95,000 rupiah, not the 120,000 rupiah they'll ask you for.

Booked a Deluxe Room Garden View, assigned to a room in Block B, facing the garden/pool area.I had asked for a renovated room, was assured it was renovated, but it obviously wasn't. Fixtures are old, tired. Very very strong moldy smell in the room, asked to be moved, second room in Block B, also had a moldy smell, also not renovated. Staff offered to upgrade us to a Lagoon Access Suite (reading the reviews, this is a pattern) for US$125 per night (not the usual US$150 per night), were shown one of the suites in Block 1 rooms 1100+. There was a slight moldy smell but felt it was tolerable. Partner awoke during the night with a reaction to the mold, next morning took a look outside (had arrived in the dark) and saw our view of the garden was not that pleasant. Garden not cared for well in this area, asked to be moved, went to room 3126, Block 3. No moldy smell here; instead, a strong sewer smell when the shower and bidet spray were turned on. Reported to 4 different people on staff. Workman sent to fix it, said it was the fan that was not working in the bathroom, but the problem persisted. Was not fixed while we were there. A plumber is needed. Customer service sent a very young man with a room deodorizer spray; he sprayed and left with the spray, which I asked to have sent back to our room. Floors were badly stained in this room; asked to have them cleaned before we moved in. Cleaners arrived with a solution and brushes to scrub the stains in the marble; were able to take out most of the stains, also taking the finish off the marble. Bathroom marble floor also stained; looked like hair dye.

Were differences in the two lagoon access suites: first one we were moved from had a coffee maker, extra water to use in it, and a good working hair dryer. Room we were moved to did not have a coffee maker, no extra water (until we asked for it), and a poorly working hair dryer. Website says coffee maker (and newspaper) are supplied, but they were not in room 3126.

The beach: small in size, lounge chairs were crowded together. Local vendors selling clothing, jewellery, toys, approach all the guests using the lounge chairs - saw at least 12 of them at various times. They walk up and down the beach area, sometimes sit on the hotel beach. Other hotels prohibit this. Their beaches are private.

Positives:
The lagoon access suites are quite lovely; they're 1.5 years old, though the two suites we had access differed in wear and tear. 3126 was very well "used" whereas the suite in the 1100 block appeared to be in better shape. Lovely good-sized bathroom with bathtub and separate shower. Patio has a small table and two lounge chairs. Able to slip into the water at any time, water surrounded by lovely gardens. Very pleasant environment; sometimes very quiet, can be noisy if there are children in nearby suites using the pool.

Staff: always listened, tried to help, pleasant to deal with, co-operative, patient. Some at the reception desk speak better English than others. Especially appreciated Anastasia. All staff, whether cleaners, maintenance men, servers, reception, always greeted us with warmth and friendliness. They're all well trained to do so, but we got the feeling the feelings were genuine. They're the hotel's best resource.

Fabulous gardens - generally well cared for, except in the Block 1 lagoon access suite area by the tennis courts. Very pleasant place to walk.

Food - good breakfasts - great attempt to meet the needs of a variety of different cultures; wondered when some of the restaurants were open. The restaurant where we ate breakfast advertised itself as being open 24 hours, but wasn't. It wasn't open at 6:00 PM, but later. The Sorrento - never did find out when it was open.

Hotel has a Departure Lounge by the gym where guests can wait in air conditioned comfort for their flight, if it's after check out time. Can shower and get a free non-alcoholic drink. Hotel will extend noon checkout to 2:00 if you ask. Much appreciated.

Suggestions for improvement, in addition to getting rid of the moldy smell and stained floors, and having good quality fixtures/appliances that work properly:

1.Arriving guests could be given a fact sheet indicating the opening hours of the restaurants/bars and spa. Or at least post this information in a prominent place where guests will see it.
2.Tell guests where the ATMs are. I asked someone at reception and happened to speak to someone with limited English. I understood him to say we had to go to a shopping mall somewhere in town. A guest told us the closest ATM was in the parking lot of The Laguna, the hotel next door, and there are several more in the Bali Collection, a nearby shopping mall.

3. Prohibit vendors from harassing guests on the beach.

4, Tell guests where the travel desks are. Took us a few days to find them, and then it was by accident.

We wondered where guests were eating, and when we went to the Bali Collection, a nearby shopping mall, we found out. Numerous restaurants, some with good quality food. Bars, shops. 10 minute walk from the hotel.

Day before checkout we got our hotel bill, and a letter from the general manager asking us to go to tripadvisor.com to give the hotel a 5 star rating. Sorry, couldn't possibly do that given the room quality. We really should have been offered a huge discount, given the state of the rooms, and in particular, the sewer smell. That is just not acceptable.

Room Tip: Seems not to matter if you ask for a renovated room. It doesn't get you one. Did hear some cons...

We love Nusa Dua for a short stay. It is very quiet and we enjoy getting away from the busy areas of Seminyak and Legian for a bit. Restaurants are not abundant if you don't want to eat at Bali Collections. The beach itself is pretty good. It isn't Thailand but it is a long way from Kuta thankfully!!! Shopping is also limited in Nusa Dua.
The Melia is a lovely surprise. The grounds are old Balinese style, with lots of greenery. It is a very large resort, not boutique style. Our room was great and did not smell musty and both our interconnecting rooms had great a/c which we were worried about from TA reviews. They have now installed free wifi all over the hotel which was pretty good speed. It is unusual in Bali to get the same speeds as we are used to at home so no use complaining!

Cons:
Breakfast area was stuffy and smelly. The array of foods I think could do with a bit of an overhaul. Breads limited and cakelike and almost no condiments bar some lame jams. Cereals as well fairly basic. Pool towel system is a pain but I understand they must lose so many and it seems common place in many places now to offer a towel only if you have a card with you. The bathrooms were probably my biggest gripe. They are old and pretty average. They have done up rooms but the bathrooms remain unpleasant. They need to be done up asap.

Go and eat at Bambu Bali. It is A+++! Not cheap but great.

Overall a pretty good stay for a few days only.

Nice facility with welcoming staff. A little on the slow side when checking in and out. Really enjoyed the breakfast buffet. Close to local shops and restaurants. Lovely pool area. Would recommend for families. Nothing extravagant, but really very nice.

Room Tip: Choose an upgraded room rather than the basic. It would be worth it.

Spent three nights there and I'm generally happy with the experience. Staffs are warm and welcoming. Food is not bad. View at the beach restaurant is great. Plenty of selection at breakfast (plenty of people at the same time).
Now some downsides1. The room facility is a little old, but still quite clean. 2. The air conditioning is very humid. I can even feel my bed a bit damp. 3. Power cut 4 times at one night is a little unexpected. (though only cut for less than 20 sec each time). 4. Private beach is okay, but quite small. Hotels at Sanya's Yalong Bay offer way better private beaches.
