“Very minimal facilities, dingy atmosphere, require better maintenance and refurbishment.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2011 via mobile

Offer cheap rate so you get what you pay for. But the bathrooms desperately need refurbishment. Old furnitures, towels, bedsheets need to be changed with new ones. With all rooms open up to the pool it is actually a very unique and nice atmosphere, if only they had more lights outside the rooms.
I'd say this hotel is rather old and total refurbishment would have made it a whole lot better place to stay.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2011

I heard about this hotel through Wikitravel, but was worried about booking it after reading so many bad reviews on Trip Advisor. But due to Easter holidays several places I contacted were booked out - and this place had space so we thought we better take it, and I am glad we did.

The Kuta / Legian Beach area of Bali is expensive. It is "THE beach area" and there area lots of four or five star hotels. There are some budget places left, but all the reviews we read on them talked about how noisy they were. As such, we really wanted to find a mid-range hotel that was good value but quiet. Bali Matahari Hotel totally fit the bill.

The Bali Matahari is on an alley and is an easy walk to the beach. When I called to make a booking I was told a ten minute walk, but that must be for slow pokes as it never took us that long. It was especially convenient as it was near a gate to the beach that was basically the divider between the Kuta section and the Legian section - this meant we had loads of white sand to choose from. Plus we were in easy walking distance to the nice beach front restaurants of Legian (such as Seaside Restaurant).

The hotel itself was clean and comfortable. The lobby staff was friendly and tried to be helpful although they never had things such as a local map on hand. Still didn't really need one as there was no problem in finding the beach.

Our room was small but everything we needed. It has a double bed with clean sheets; two nightstands with lamps (although one was missing a lighbulb; a wardrobe; a mini-fridge; and a TV with a few channels including the BBC so we could watch the Royal Wedding. The bathroom was clean but small and there was hot water. We even had a wee deck with two chairs that were handy for putting all our sandy beach wear on.

The best thing about the room was the aircon which was nice an powerful. Plus having aircon meant we did not have to open the window so our room stayed silent and mossie free. It was way quieter than I could have hoped for after reading reviews on lots of accomodation in the area.

Our hotel also had a nice pool with a few lounge chairs although we never used it as we always went to the beach. Their was also a lobby restaurant that we never tried. Well, we did try breakfast there once as it was free with the room, but it was pretty bad so after that we simply went out. Which was fine since just up the street was a delightful coffee shop called Coffee Corner - fab lattes and an excellent avocado melt. There was also supposed to be free wifi, but you could only get it in a few spots in the lobby and so was not really useable. But again, Coffee Corner had free wifi so each morning we went their for a latte and computer time. Perfect.

We were actually a bit hesitant in coming to this area of Bali as we had heard so many complaints about the party atmosphere and loud music. But we experienced none of that. The Bali Matahari hotel provided us with a clean, quiet base for the beaches and we enjoyed ourselves.

All this for an extremely reasonably 300,000 rupiah which is approximately US$ 30. This is a very good price for this area of Bali. We were there in low season so the price they gave us was even cheaper than posted on the internet. Yes the Bali Matahari is basic, but you should not expect more for that price. Even people paying twice as much may not find a room as quiet and peaceful. We did look at another room in the hotel which was 450,000 it had two double beds in it and was much larger. But we did not need more space so went with the budget room and were extremely satisfied.

I will stay here again when I return to Bali.

They definitely could improve their cleanliness and rooms. Our room was a regular one for two people with everything essential (mini-bar, tv, air condition etc.) but nothing extra, such as a hair dryer would have been nice. The room wasn't bad, if you ignore the worn out sheets and towels and the nasty shower curtan. I really liked the pool scene and how relaxed the patio, it was in, in general was.

The Location is excellent for shopping and eating but the walk to Kuta beach is a tad longer (about 5-10 minutes). The taxis though seemed to have small difficulties in finding the hotel. We didn't try the hotel's restaraunt but the menu didn't seem very special. For breakfast we used the neighbouring hotel and a restaurant called Senen (excellent porridge) quite regularly.

For the package price of USD91 (2 nights), we got a free upgrade to deluxe room with 1 incl of breakfast & 1 hr massage each. This hotel is full of Japanese! :)

At the airport, couldnt find the driver who was supposed to fetch us before realising he was waiting at the back instead of the first few at the front. Although we didnt wait that long, I was afraid that our plans will be disturbed if indeed he didnt turn up.

Upon arrival at the room, we were greeted with a clean bed (decorated with flowers), cool towel (the heat was undescribeable), fruits (it wasnt that fresh, but what do you expect??) & a fairly wide room for 2 of us.

The bathroom can be improved though as its small with broken tiles all over. Location was so-so only, not really that near to HRC though. We even decided to rent a bike for SGD8 instead, to move ard at Kuta area. A walk back from main Kuta Beach entrance to our hotel may take almost fifteen minutes (but we took a longer time since we were already tired walking from hotel to Beach)

The hotel forgot to pick us up from the airport, and refused to drop us off without paying extra, even though this was organised the day before. The breakfast was reasonable, and restaraunt staff were friendly. The front counter staff were not at all helpful. The rooms were bad even by bali standards, bathroom was pretty disgusting, the "superior" room was tiny. The pool and courtyard area was ok. Everytime we ran out of toilet paper we had to go and ask for more. Location was ok.
