Good, basic and clean accommodation in great location, opposite the beach and minutes walk to poppies lanes. Staff were very helpful, grounds were lovely and the rooms were fine. This is an older, more traditional Balinese style hotel, which I prefer over the more modern contemporary ones (at least when in Bali)

The staff were all friendly and smiling the service was good
The room was adequate for sleeping and showering, we were not there much as we had a lot of site seeing and shopping to do. We made friends of a couple of the staff and they really liked helping us with our Indonesian. the towels were old but the rooms were clean and toilet and shower were clean. We were situated across the road from the beach and about five minutes walk from the two Poppies lanes. Breakfast was excellent there was eggs, bacon, pancakes, croissants, pastries, juice, tea, coffee and of course there was the traditional indonesian hot fare as well. The restaurant over looked the road and there was always plenty to see while you were eating. I would like to say a big thank-you to Catur, Jasmini and Redana who made our stay enjoyable as the treated us like friends. There is a great Australian owned restaurant named SHEPPYS if you turn left and walk up and around the corner, they serve both Indonesian and european food. Foods good and cheap to. what I liked best was that the hotel was quiet and you did not get a lot of noise from the road. What I liked least was that the showers were not to good and you had to run the water for a while before it was hot.
If you need some one to leave you alone when they are trying to peddle their wares just say, tidak terimah kasih, this means no thank-you in Indonesian.

We only stayed here one night due to our flight being changed and only paid A$80 for the night. It was ok, rooms are outdated but they have what you need. Breakfast was also ok as were the staff and the pool area. Good place to stay if you want to be in Kuta and not in your room a lot.

We found the staff very helpful.Originally put on top floor, wich was changed to ground floor the nxt day. We had 12 of us staying there and all found it great. breakfast was ample, with egg station ,pancake station, salad bar, dim sum, hot food selection,pastries and of course fruit bar. If anyone complains about the breafast spread they must have seerious issues!!!! Pool was loveley & clean although pool surrounds cld do with a freshen up.Aircon cold. Rooms clean. Toilets flushed. Hot water good but takes 10min 2 come thru. Free surfing lesson was awesome! HAVE A GO. we were aged between 18-48 and all had fun.I liked the location between kuta and legian.You can jump on the back of scooter and get anywhere..

They have a good selection of cheap rooms, the service was better than any other place that I stayed in Bali, great pool and restaurant. It was also directly across from the beach in the center of Kuta which is the perfect location! I would recommend it to anyone!!!

Stayed in May 2011, warm friendly staff made you feel welcome. Special mention to Jasmin one of the restaurant and pool bar staff, always smiling and friendly looked after us very well a valuable staff member to your hotel.
The only minor gripe was the Room Towels needed replacing a bit old and worn.
Great Hotel will be returning on next visit to Bali.
Credit to the Ground staff immaculate Gardens well looked after.

I stay in a lot of places all over the world on holidays and the Grand Istana Rama has been the best experience for years.

It's a real oasis in the middle of Kuta, with a tranquil garden, amazing staff, solid rooms (not 5 star, but they have everything), great pool (with a bar), best all-you-can eat breakfast I've seen and terrific entertainment in the restaurant of an evening (it's an open air place that overlooks the main road outside - tons going on).

Location

It's along Kuta Beachfront, just a few metres away from the shoppers paradise that is Poppies 1 and 2.

Arrival

The Reception Staff speak good English and are there to please. Booking in was simple, fast and efficient.

The Reception area is bright and spacious with comfortable chairs and a Tour Desk available.

The Porter who took us to our room was very friendly as well, explaining everything in the room very well. Unlike a lot of hotels, he didn't hang around waiting for a tip - he was out the door before I could get my hand in my pocket (we had this same porter a week later when we checked back in - he was just as good the second time).

Rooms

On our first stay we had a balcony room that overlooked the gardens (they have a tom of green leafy gardens and lawn that give the hotel a very relaxed feel). The beds were very comfortable, perfectly clean with modern fixtures. The Safe was an added bonus to store passports in.

The balcony was a great spot to relax and take a breath after the hecticness (don't even know if that's a word) of Kuta.

On our 2nd stay a week later, we had a Garden Villa - it was far more spacious, with a much larger bathroom (including a bath). Lovely spot to sit in the garden.

Facilities & Activities

This is where the Grand Istana Rama really excels.

The best thing about it is they have lots of free cultural activities - from language classes to cooking to coconut climbing.

They want you to experience the real Balinese rather than the typical tourist thing.

The staff love showing tourists traditional Balinese activities if they're keen and it's a real feature of the hotel.

Add in the:

* great pool (complete with Pool Bar),
* massage people beside the pool available for foot massages to full body
* surfboard hire and lessons
* Free WIFI
* Tour Desk

Food

The breakfast is the best all-you-can eat I've seen. They have everything for a hearty eater to fill up before a busy day.

I ate in the restaurant at night a couple of times and it was great value for money (and a real experience watching the Balinese belly dancers, bar jugglers and more).

The restaurant (where you have breakfast and dinner) overlooks the beachside road, so tons going on to look at.

Grand Istana Rama has real charm, great value and authentic experiences for the tourist. Loved it.....and that's the longest review I've ever written!

Room Tip: Loved Balcony room with nice views over the garden
