“Plenty of shopping”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

We ventured from Nusa Dua on a rainy day to do some shopping in Kuta Square ( used Bali essential tours as our private driver for the day). Lots of shopping ,from Matahari Dept store to the local markets across the street. Matahari had good selection, everything was clearly priced so no haggling over prices. We wanted to get a flavor of the local markets and that did not disappoint either. Just be prepared to be called out many times by the vendors. and don't be shy about walking away . That's what usually gets them to lower the price. Also, the money exchangers offered higher rates here than at our hotel.

A short walk from the local market is the beach, which on Jan. 2nd, looked like a mess, probably due to the New Year's festivities. Garbage was all over the beach and the boardwalk. This made me glad with our choice of staying at the quieter Nusa Dua area.

Great shops. Thank god for air conditioned shops. Just watch the traffic crossing the road. The cost of items in these shops a small saving from home

“A lot of different shops selling all sorts of things”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2014

Not being a local Kuta Square seems to be a main street with lots of shops on the side streets.
The main street has a lot of standard store fronts including beach clothing, surf gear, brand names and fashion. If also has a KFC and MacDonalds and Gloria Jeans round the corner.
In the middle is the Matahari which is a multilevel department store selling all the standard items including shoes, kids clothing and luggage.
As you leave the main street you get into a bit of street stall style hard sell vendors. As always they want to get as much as they can from you for their item. They will offer you specials for more items and get you to put on the item etc. Here the rule is know what the item is worth or what you want to pay and be prepared to walk away. It can be a real hard sell, but I found the vendors nicer than the ones in Thailand.
