“Avoid Bakas Elephant Park”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2011

Do not go to Bakas Elephant Park. This park is primarily aimed at extracting as much money as possible from tourists, with little regard to the welfare of the animals.

As all the other reviews have said, this was by far the worst "attraction" I have ever been to. The elephants were clearly underfed and the one we were on kept trying to stop and eat, which resulted in a sharp bang on the head with the keeper's stick. On the way back we passed through the area where the elephants sleep - a big concrete pad dotted with large chains. There was one elephant chained there unable to move when we rode through. Once you arrive back at the park the elephant is made to perform a few tricks with you on its back, before you disembark and are quickly ushered away from any further interaction with the elephants (unless you want to pay extra to buy some fruit). From here, things only get worse, as you then see the park's other animals. Parrots chained to trees, desperately trying to bite the chain off. Sad-looking monkeys in cages that are only big enough for small birds, with no water at all. There were also a couple of young orang-utans wearing nappies that you could hold and take photos of if you pay extra.

“Worst animal abuse I have ever experienced...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2011

Our hotel guide organized this tour for my boyfriend and I. The day before the same guide took us on a tour up to ubud stopping at every place that he can get commission for if we bought something. Be careful and decide where YOU want to go prior to any tour..
The animals at the park were all in cages and not looked after. The park has 10 elephants. We rode Andrew a beautiful male. Except he was undernourished, had skin problems and our guide told us he would work his entire life every day for the tourist park. At night they are chained at the leg. On our ride we could tell how unhappy Andrew was and had to be continually demanded by the rider to keep going. The rider told us that they don't feed them their adequate diet and asked for a tip to go towards fruit for Andrew. He did seem sincere and we gave him $20 but we could not be certain of his motives. Over all a horrible experience that has left me ridden with guilt. Please don't support this business by spending any of your money there...

“We got scammed by our driver as well”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2011

To be avoided, baby orang utans in diapers, birds chained to trees, elephants from Sumatra, elephant trip on concrete path, not jungle. Terribly expensive and elephant trainer conversation centered on how much tip he should receive. A complete and utter waste of time.
This is supposedly close to ubud and not Denpasar from my understamding.

I just wanted to add our vote to the others as to how truly awful this place is. I am sure that are driver wasn't aware when he took us there but have now advised him and said that all right minded people would be distressed to see how this place operates. I really wish we had read the other reviews before going as we wouldn't have.

The other reviews are spot on in all regards but I would like to add how we didn't see any parent orangutans which worries me that they were shot to get at the babies to exploit.

Plus there were other animals housed in small cages or concrete pits not looking very content at all.

We don't know whether the alternatives are any good but DO NOT do the Bakas park!

“AVOID BAKAS (Taro might be okay but this review is for Bakas Elephant Tour)”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2011

Avoid this place like the plague, a big tourist rip off, we got a driver from Ubud and he took us to a few places over a couple of days and to be honest even though we enjoyed quite a few of them looking back some of them were either overcharging or just poor quality which the driver was obviously taking us to to get some kick backs. None more so that Bakas Elephant Tour (this review is not for Taro which from some reviews appears to be much better). We arrived early in the morning and was shocked at the prices to start with, the warning signs are there really in all the different duration rides to tease out of you the most dollars that they can get. We opted for the 30 min ride - we were there now and wanted to ride to opted in to the scam :-( The ride was enjoyable and our guide seemed nice, but it was just a loop around a concrete path and the guide was definitely laying on his life story and using every opportunity to ensure we knew a big tip was what he was after. Once we were off the ride they were immediately trying to get more dollars from you with pictures with other animals. Within 50 mins we were back in the car going to the next place - did we enjoy the ride? - yes - but that was the quickest US$ 275 I spent on a family of four trip in Bali. Since checking out the website on our return I see we also supposed to get a welcome drink and a buffet lunch in the price - we never received either. However judging by other comments I just read maybe not receiving the buffet was a blessing in disguise.
Final words... AVOID Bakas Elephant Tour and be careful with your driver picked up in the Ubud area - maybe go with the driver recommended by the place you stay... we did that later on and that driver was good. The place we stayed was fantastic (Alam Shanti) and despite this elephant trip we had a fantastic time in Bali - especially in Ubud.
