“Corporate, Professional,Cold yet CHARMING !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2014

Rokeby Manor! From Walter Scott to Landour property, a Boutique hotel. Only one of its kind we think. Very much expensive yet beautiful as a gem inside a casket! One has to stay here for two or more days to understand the magic in the air of Landour. And staying at Rokeby makes the feeling very special. We went there as a honeymoon couple and stayed at Rhododendron Suite, a perfect fantasy-maker for anyone’s first trip together. The stay, the food the service and the experience- all are memorable, with a coldness of behaviour from the employees. They are quite professional and corporate; they are apt and smart but somewhere the warmth was missing, as we found at Padmini Nivas in Mussoorie just before the Rokeby-days. But one thing we liked here, the very special and beautiful CORNER SHOP, where one can easily get exotic handicrafts of Uttarakhand. So ultimately Rokeby lefts a R-O-C-K-I-N-G impression on its presentability to the clientele. That’s all.

Room Tip: Try to have Rhododendron Suite and adjacent cottage rooms for valley view.

We were 2 families who stayed in the log cottage for 4nights including new years. While booking we were quite apprehensive about the cost (it is not cheap) the cottage was the only room available , and maybe 4 nights is too much. But I must say a fabulous trip
Cottagewas as expected a nice 3bedroom , we had 5kids with us so we gave them the master bbedroom room, a functional kitchen n living room. What made all the difference was the staff, everyone was so polite and helpful cannot commend the staff enough.
We froze thru our 4layers of clothes ..... Not used to the cold at all they made us a bonfire outside our cottage and provided extra blankets so we could enjoy the outside till way past midnight . Even organized a barbecue in our little garden where the chef came n cooked for us.... The view of the sunset is the best from right outside our room ... The walks around the hotel where breath taking..... It's location is amazing .... If you are more than a family do go for the cottage as the private space around you will not find in the regular rooms. Our boys managed to play football everyday.
The hotel has a lovely restaurant with amazing food and a minute s walk down is hear Duran where you get the yummiest North Indian fast food .... Parathas... Maggi noodles.. Pakodas I can still taste them and pancakes and waffles too. My regret was not eating there again could have avoided going to mall road and eating there...

PROS
1. Beautiful location; Landour is heaven as it is.
2. Cosy restaurant; good food
3. Good, attentive staff.
4. Lovely rooms
CONS
1. They cant help it but its a small property.
2. Not very easy to access. In fact for a first timer to Mussorie and that side, its a nightmare.
3. Not much to do at the property itself
4. Room tariff i felt was a tad high; its an expensive place; especially rooms. Food is reasonable

All in a great property. Mussoories not been developed well like Shimla. Unless you love the mountains and the bliss they offer, you might not like the place, or the property. On a personal level such people should not go to the hills either. Theres something missing in the place to get a 5 star rating. I dont have a pulse on it, but it is. However its a must visit place. Monish and Nicholas were excellent, and did all they could to make it a great stay.

Room Tip: The normal rooms are all good. some dont have views. thats a bit of a let down. we stayed at the rho...

Any tourist destination is bound to be busy for year end. This holiday to Masuri I was mentally prepared for the hustle bustle of an overcrowded, over exploited hill town.
Rokbey Manor is not in Masuri but in Landour and that makes all the difference. It's a place far from the crowd. A Manor that is as English as it can get -on top of a mountain nestled among Spruce and Deodar trees with some spectacular view of snowy mountains and winter sun sets.
The Manor was done up for Christmas so beautifully when we arrived that we felt pampered. The staff was courteous, warm and helpful. The place offers good food. Also there are some great options near by from the Gobi parantha at Char Dukan to the yum Tibetian fare Dumma's Inn.
The walks around the property - the chakkar- as they call it are picturesque and one literally have the place to oneself.
A minus if any, would be the size of their dessert portion. They were too good but they were too small.

Rokeby is perched in the picture postcard village of Landour, high above Mussourie. Views from the hotel are wonderful and walks through the village are great, giving views of the great Himalaya in the distance. Check in was easy and we were offered a choice of rooms. The rooms themselves were very pleasant and followed the hotel's general theme, which was somewhere between an English country cottage, Rockies log cabin and slightly twee American 1950s diner. The restaurant was very good and offered excellent Continental food in addition to Indian fare. But it was a shame there was no alcohol licence. The main public room has the TV on all the time, which I could have done without, but also offered books and magazines. It was frustrating though that even the easy reading paperbacks were catalogued into the Rokeby library collection. Understandable for coffee table books, but a book exchange for the paperbacks would have been appreciated as even a quick reader will struggle to get through an American thriller in 2 days. The strict rules governing the library and its books and magazines seemed a little unnecessary.

The hotel had a fleet of modern SUVs which were very useful, in great condition and well driven. They also all contained working seatbelts, which is pretty unheard of in India, and for tourists wary of joining the 145,000 that die in car accidents each year were most welcome. Rokeby also has a great salon which offered very reasonable massages, waxing and haircuts. It also seemed to be a keen supporter of the Klean campaign which looked to free Landour from the Indian blight of garbage and Rokeby clearly has promising environmental policies. Most impressive of all was Monish John, who looks after guests. He was unfailingly helpful.

We visited in the run up to Christmas and seasonal decorations were everywhere. Clearly much thought and time had gone into hotel's beautification which I think is generally indicative of the thought that has gone into the hotel as a whole.

Thank you so much for your elaborate review.
We will definitely look into the issues that you have pointed out and sort it out, though there seems to be a misunderstanding regarding exchanging of paperbacks from our library. Many of our guests exchange, donate or even request if a book could be taken.
We wish you all the best and look forward to your next visit.

We went to Mussoorie to see the house where my mother was born. Rokeby Manor was an excellent place to stay as it was away from the noise of the town, had wonderful views from Landour (sunrise and sunset especially picturesque), was comfortable, and, moreover, had very helpful staff, especially Guest Relations Manager Monish John, who discovered my family's old home, took us there and found out from local people what he could of its history. We appreciated it immensely. The hotel is quite small so feels quite home-like, has a beauty salon, where we had facials and hair cuts, a small shop selling locally-made items and taxis at the ready to take you wherever you want to go. There are very pleasant restaurant and lounge areas, very quiet in the week before Christmas, but the rooms were decorated and there was a Christmas tree so it looked quite festive. The food was good. A tip - if you go at a busy time, try to avoid the rooms off Reception as they may be noisy.

This place comes highly recommended by the locals. The cottage is secluded away from the market place. When we visited ,the place was already decked up for Christmas. The mood both inside and outside the cottage was so wonderful that you tend to forget that you are in India. We were shown to our rooms but we were not too happy with it. We wanted something more private. The staff were very helpful and they showed us all the available rooms for us to choose from until we were completely satisfied. We got the rooms with the stars and it was was very magical.
The staff in every department were very courteous and their services were excellent. Small gestures made a lot of difference during our stay. The people at Rokeby also plan out the activities that you could do during your stay based on what suits you. And if you want to just do nothing and just cuddle up with a book you can do that too. The lounge area has a decent collection of books for both kids and adults.
They food at Emily's had a wide choice and was excellent.
There was a choice of using the jacuzzi but we chose to spend time at the tea garden staring at the winter's line which is unique to the place.
The place does not have a spa but has a very homely salon.
I strongly recommend this place.

Room Tip: The size of the rooms could be deceiving in the pictures.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Rokeby was built in 1840 by Captain G.N. Cauthy and is one of the landmarks of Landour. The house and two acre estate are situated slightly above and to the east of St. Paul's Church and the old cantonment parade ground, which is now Char Dukan. Like many houses in Mussoorie, its name is taken from the writings of Sir Walter Scott, whose book-length poem describes heroic battles near the original Rokeby Castle in England. Methodist missionaries continued to operate the property as a guest house throughout the rest of the 20th century. Today, Rokeby has been carefully restored to its original glory. This heritage building is resplendent with character in its elaborate brick arches and niches, intricate stone walls, real wood floors and beams, and cosy fireplaces. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, the traditions of bygone years – where colonial officers, renegade soldiers of fortune and pious miss saibs lived under one roof – can still be felt. An air of mystery beckons visitors. ... more   less
