“Cozy Class”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

We absolutely loved Rokeby Manor. We didn't stay there but wish we had. The whole ambiance is cozy and has an old world charm of a British country side home. The rooms look so tempting to stay (have a look even if you don't stay). Must eat at Emily's restaurant and of course take the seat outdoors regardless of the weather. The food is great and the view is amazing.

Rokeby is peaceful and serene and a MUST visit. The tea garden and outdoor seating on the ground floor are a great place to hang, or you can play the addictive board games in the lobby area.

I love the Rokeby. I have been many times and never come back disappointed.

Pro's:
Location - It's located in one of the most peaceful places in India, Landour. It's secluded, a far cry from the madness of Mussoorie. Perfect for a relaxing getaway.
Beautiful property - They do a great job of maintaining the property. It's rustic and beautiful at the same time. It's one of the best heritage properties I've seen.
Great food - You would be hard pressed to find such so many tasty options anywhere in Delhi, much less in the middle of the mountains. I always leave impressed with the food.
Comfortable beds - The beds are very comfortable, soft with big fluffy pillows.
Great staff - The staff is well trained, fast and courteous.

Con's:
I can't think of a single one. Even the price, although a bit high, is very reasonable for the quality of the place. You'll have a hard time finding a better value anywhere.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good but small. If you need space, go for a suite. The Rhododendron suite has it...

small hotel with a location that only an avid traveler would find, away from the bustle of Mussoorie town. Though we didn't stay here but visited repeatedly for the food. They serve Indian and continental food at their restaurant - Emily's. The continental is great. Good authentic taste, fresh ingredients and unique dishes (which you probably wont even find in Delhi). The chicken in mustard sauce is good and so was the kalamari (amazing that they can keep it fresh, that far away from the ocean). The highlight is the desserts with the pick of the lot being the sticky toffee cake (melt in your mouth) and the key-lime pie (perfect mix of sweet and zing).
Note - the place is small so you should call ahead and make reservations.

Rokeby has a lot on offer - and is expensive by local standards, but if you're willing to splurge, it is undeniably one of the better hotel/lodging options in Mussoorie/Landour. The food is quite high-end with the menu shifted around to continually try new things (while retaining favourites), the staff is able to answer questions and willing to do their best to accomodate any particular desires; however, it is important to note the great variety of room options (from single rooms to dorm space to smaller cottages), and the fact that there are often parties on the property - which may be loud and distracting to those trying to get a good night's sleep.

I have been there for lunch about 5 times in the last 1 year. This time on 30.09.12 our salad came on the table 45 minutes after we ordered and was a really white looking version of the so called 'Mix Green Salad'. The pizza was full of oil, I could literally see my face reflect in it!
Very upsetting to see the downfall in food quality and service. I don't think they are able to handle a full house at their restaurant.

Rokeby Manor is part boutique hotel, part country house hotel and part Swiss chalet, which is fitting for a converted colonial house in the mountains which has been brought right up to date. The decor is refreashingly witty, no two rooms are the same and one feels as if one is in a friend's home, rather than a hotel. The food delicious, varied and plentiful. The staff are not just friendly, but kind. If you want to experience a whole other side of India, spend a few days in the hills. Breather the air, take in the natural beauty and be wrapped in the warmth of Rokeby Manor.

Tucked away in Landour, this place came as a surprise even to me, who has been born and brought up in Dehradun. Came to know about it from Tripadvisor and was wary of the reviews it had got. But now I can assure you, each one of them is true.

Apart from the beautiful colonial property, nice, clean rooms and courteous staff, the biggest attraction was the scrumptious food, a rare commodity in Uttrakhand. The owner Mr. Narang has a high end food business in Mumbai and the influence can clearly be seen (read tasted) in Mussoorie.

The only thing that I wished they had was a SPA.

Room Tip: Rooms inside the main section, ground floor are better.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Rokeby was built in 1840 by Captain G.N. Cauthy and is one of the landmarks of Landour. The house and two acre estate are situated slightly above and to the east of St. Paul's Church and the old cantonment parade ground, which is now Char Dukan. Like many houses in Mussoorie, its name is taken from the writings of Sir Walter Scott, whose book-length poem describes heroic battles near the original Rokeby Castle in England. Methodist missionaries continued to operate the property as a guest house throughout the rest of the 20th century. Today, Rokeby has been carefully restored to its original glory. This heritage building is resplendent with character in its elaborate brick arches and niches, intricate stone walls, real wood floors and beams, and cosy fireplaces. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, the traditions of bygone years – where colonial officers, renegade soldiers of fortune and pious miss saibs lived under one roof – can still be felt. An air of mystery beckons visitors. ... more   less
