Our second trip to Landour in Mussoorie was indeed the fondest. This was a business trip like our first but this time, the warmth we experienced (in the midst of a 5 degree C winter) was incomparable to any other. We landed there on the 28th of December and left on the 30th of December, 2012. Reena and I (Lindsay) are a musician couple and we were in Mussoorie to perform at a party hosted by hotelier and businessman Mr. Sanjay Narang. His charming hospitality included him putting us up in the cosiest, warmest, loveliest, cutest, most delightful little Villa that I think exists in all of Landour...La Villa Bethany.
About the Villa: The first thing that struck us was the absence of anything hotel-like or lodge-like about the place. THIS PLACE WAS LIKE WALKING INTO YOUR OWN HOME....or at least....into a friend or relative's home. It is such a quaint, dainty little place that it gives the impression of Snow White's cottage when you're looking down at it from about 40 feet up. You'd half expect to see the 7 dwarfs running around !!! It's so picturesque from the outside and thoroughly charming on the inside. Every single room has a story behind it. The rooms are individually named and you will be provided with the history behind each name. The decor is a fine blend of art, simplicity and colour and you can never tire of admiring each piece of art, be it a wall hanging or even the humble doormat. This place is a virtual art walk where every single item, be it part of the decor or just plain utility stuff, has been personally selected and carefully placed by the awesome people who run this place. I'd like to go on about the place but I cannot resist the urge to gush about the owners so here goes.....
About the Owners: Sunita and Amarjeet Kudle are the exemplary twosome that give La Villa Bethany it's unique comfort levels. The backup support system is their very bright, chirpy and extremely charming 4 year old daughter Srushti...Oh ! She's a doll. And then there's Nani...Sunita's Mum....always knitting and ever-ready to break into a conversation or dish out some heart-warming parathas. Amarjeet and Sunita both come from impressive hotel backgrounds and the knowledge, experience and quality-control they've both gained from the industry have gone on to guide them expertly into making La Villa Bethany the superb place it is. Both of them seem to have bottom-less energy, enthusiasm and spirit and all that converts to you feeling instantly welcome. We got so close to them that we sat up chatting with them till 2 in the morning. We probably would have gone on longer but we all suddenly realised that everyone had an early start the next day. Amarjeet has an immense knowledge of topics ranging from the history and geography of Mussoorie to recipes of some yummy dishes and he can speak on issues varying between running a business to child psychology...a virtual encyclopedia but also very aware of the interest levels of his guests. Sunita can cook up a storm in a very short time and can make the most delightlful conversation while she's cooking too. The only thing that comes close to her mouth-watering food is the excellent tea she can brew in minutes....very welcome in the winter ! The breakfasts are simply to die for....Indian or English, they really pep you up to to take on the day and the miles before you (if you're the walking type). Now I really have to say a lot about the rest of this little paradise so I'll finish about Amarjeet and Sunita by saying that both of them have the perfect attitude and the deepest determination to making their 100 year old house in the hills a sure shot success story. I hope God continues to give them the grace, strength and patience to keep going in the exact same unwavering direction they are just now. We wish them all the success for the future.
About the experience of living here: Let's say you are pampered hand and foot by this awesome couple. We have never before experienced such direct and endless caretaking from the owners of a place we've stayed at. Right from personally waking you up at your desired hour to preparing a good-night cup of tea or coffee, you seem to get anything you ask for at L-V-B (La Villa Bethany). They even left the in-room heater running for us before we got back from our performance...how thoughtful is that !!!!! Oh ! I must inform you that the Kudles are "Green People" ...not aliens but yes ...... environment-super-friendly. They have the whole nine yards going.....solar water heaters, compost pit, organic cosmetics, the works..... ! and get this ! they are also work providers for the less fortunate and the unemployed. They use and sell enchanting products made by unemployed women in remote villages. The yak hair blankets we used are oh so cosy and warm and it's difficult to believe that the bath soaps are made by people from a remote village. So by providing support to people in need we found one more reason to love and respect Amarjeet and Sunita. With all the stuff these two do all day, they even found time to relax and unwind with us and another lovely family in one of their larger rooms that has A FIREPLACE !!! This was probably one of our best spent evenings on the job. A real live fireplace..... with drinks and yummy snacks doing the rounds !
There's so much to say about La Villa Bethany and it's very charming owners but I'll end here with a couple of thoughts....If you've got Mussoorie on your travel schedule then here's where you have to be staying because apart from the breathtaking view of the valley and the hills, you get an experience worth every penny you spend here (and it's reasonable pricing here). You will be taken so much care of that saying goodbye may be the only difficult thing you'd have to do. Despite the simple homely feel of the place, you will get all the facilities and professionalism of a regular hotel.
Finally, Mussoorie is truly a beautiful place with unspoiled environs and lush vegetation. The air is clean and good and a perfect detox for people from chaotic cities. If you have to enjoy all this, there is no better place to do it than from LA VILLA BETHANY ! Amarjeet and Sunita, Srushti and Nani, you guys simply rock ! Keep up the spirit and keep smiling those megawatt smiles. We'll see you soon ! All our love...
Reena and Lindsay from Bandra Mumbai !
If you're a family, you have to take the room with the fireplace. If you're a couple take on...
