“One of the best hotels in varanasi to stay with...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2013

So if you are visiting Varanasi and don't want to spend too much (4-5 * hotels) Surya can be a good choice. The property is huge with lawns, Bar, restaurant and other in-house facilities. The staff is very professional and they know how to take care of their customers. Location wise it's on the premium cantonment area. Food is decent & drinks are not so expensive.

Room Tip: Open lawn facing rooms for morning sunshine

Good Service. Starting from reception to housekeeping everybody does pretty good job and attentive to our requests. Arrangement for our local trips even at odd hours are made, without anything to worry at the reception desk. May be one can get a cheaper transport just stepping out the entrance gate of hotel.

What you are seeing as old Palace is just a restaurant, bar and swimming pool area. The actual accommodation/rooms are in the multi-storied building with balconies. So don’t expect that you are going to stay in an “old Palace”. But you get 24 hours hot water in the bath rooms though the bath rooms are very standard.

There is a mall 500 meter away from the hotel with reasonable stores. Try "Nimbu Chai with Salt" down the street ( Near Varanasi Doordarshan TV Station) if you are not averse to taste a roadside chai.(Opposite to TV Station main gate- across the road and inside a compound you will find this)

We are glad you enjoyed staying with us and experiencing the area around the hotel. Thank you for taking time to share your positive review. We are very happy to hear that our staff met and exceeded your expectations. You are correct that the palace is where we have our restaurant, bar and banquets. Most of our rooms overlook the garden with a direct view of the front of the palace. We hope you will visit us again at Hotel Surya.

Away from the rush of the city. Lovely garden area.

Check-in: Takes a lot of time
Rooms: Needs little refurbishing, bathrooms mostly clean
Food: Breakfast was included in our rate. But otherwise the food is overpriced.

Room Tip: Room with balcony and facing the gardens/lawn are better

Family owned and operated, this hotel used to be the palace of the King of Nepal.
With stain glass windows, marble floors and a huge courtyard in the center of the grounds, Hotel Surya is an oasis of serenity in the midst of a completely chaotic city.

Hotel Surya is located in the Catonement Area of Varanasi which is a lot nicer than the areas near the ghats and the Ganges. They have a pool, a spa, cute boutique shops, a funky lounge bar, an outdoor cafe, an inviting, comfortable indoor restaurant and spacious banquet halls. Definitely not what I expected when I decided to come to Varanasi but I was pleasantly surprised and indulged in the many amenities.

Rooms are comfortable. Service is outstanding. Meals are delicious.

All the restaurants have the same menu but they offer a very diverse and eclectic mix of cuisines. You can enjoy nachos, chicken satay, pizzas, pastas and fresh salads. I was pretty reluctant to order a salad since I was concerned about the water quality but once I heard they used filtered water to clean the vegetables, I thoroughly enjoyed the spinach and beet salad. I ordered it a second time a few days later and never got sick. I was also surprised to see they served alcohol so that's a nice feature if you want to unwind with wine, beer or a cocktail. Breakfast is included in some packages and the spread is wonderful. Fruit, pastries, cereal, juice, local dishes served buffet style and an omelette station. Copious amounts of chai, tea or coffee await you upon your request.

The therapists at the spa were so pleasant and courteous. I enjoyed a special Ayruvedic message and a detailed manicure. The women were so sweet and accommodating to any special requests that I truly felt like royalty.

Outside the palace, life in Varanasi is a little different so be ready for an adventure. Either way, Hotel Surya is the perfect place to retreat after a hectic day in the city.

Spent several nights here with spouse. After late afternoon arrival we waited nearly 20 minutes before we could check in and received a dark and smelly room that was hardly more than a closet with bugs in the bathroom, on the first floor at the back of the hotel. We respectfully requested a different room.

We received a different room with balcony and facing the gardens/lawn. Much better. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom mostly clean except for some mildew on shower curtain. Bath amenities lacking, but I always travel with my own. There were two bath towels and one hand towel provided; no wash cloths. Two small soap bars and two shampoo packets. No hair dryer, not even to borrow. Told I could go to the spa to dry my hair.

The door lock was troubling. You needed the key to lock the door and also needed the key to operated the lights. This was problematic because there would be times when you'd have to remove the key from the lights to unlocks the door and be left standing in the dark! This is also a concern because if you need to leave the room in an emergency, you're trapped until you can insert the key, unlock it, and leave.

Kettle for coffee/tea. Fridge in room (but it wasn't turned on). Two .5L bottles of water daily.

Internet available but for a fee of 150 Rp for 24 hour period.

Breakfast was included in our rate. It caters more to western tastes (few Indian dishes) and also not many vegetarian dishes.

Lovely pool and garden area. Spa also on site, but we didn't use it. Several gift shops also on site but I didn't check their prices. Also a coffee house and bakery on site.

Manager Anad does his best to ensure guests are happy and should be commended for his efforts.

While I'm not sure I'd stay here again (it's geared towards Western groups and budget travelers) Anad's efforts towards an enjoyable stay went far. We were just really put off by the initial smell, dark room with bugs in the bathroom. Many travelers seem to enjoy their stay here.

It's a short walk to the nearby Mall where there's a food court, a McDonalds and a Pizza Hut if you don't want to eat at the hotel.

On a business trip for 6 nights, stayed here for the entire duration.Comfortable rooms,Spacious lawns. It's supposed to have belonged to a Nepali Prince, photographs of who adorn the Canton Room(where we usually had breakfast).Everything from the service, food to the ambience is remarkable. They have a spa too which I didn't try.Two cafes, a bar, terrific swimming pool.
My only grouse:I only hope the hotel personnel do not fall over themselves pandering to Caucasian tourists.Examples abound such as dressing themselves up in "Halloween" costumes etc.The city has already sold itself out bending backwards to please the foreigners.

All in all , a good choice for a vacation or business stay.

Room Tip: Choose the ones facing the lawns.

Thank you for staying with us. We are very happy that you enjoyed the services and ambiance of the hotel. We did have a Halloween themed dinner party for our guests and staff to enjoy. I'm sorry that you did not appreciate the festivities. It was my intention to bring my favorite holiday from the U.S. where I'm from, to Varanasi where I now live. Our local Varanasi residents enjoyed celebrating, probably more than our foreign tourists guests who were already familiar with Halloween. I hope you joined us for our wonderful Diwali celebration three nights later, where we enjoyed classical sitar and tabla, fireworks and a full buffet dinner with live tandoor. This time we dressed our staff in kurta and pajamas instead.
