“Unforgettable Varanasi Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2010

I am in Varanasi, India and experiencing this beautiful city in the way I have never imagined. I am staying at The Palace on Steps Hotel in the old town, near the ghats and galis and this was the right decision for me. I chose this place based on an article in the SpiceJet Airline magazine Although I came here with little plannning and knowledge of Varanasi, the staff here really helped me connect with the community and experience Varanasi fully, from navigating through the galis, getting my palm read by one of the best palm reader in town, taking some amazing yoga/meditation classes, etc. Also, my room directly overlooks the river Ganges. In the morning, I wake up to the chants of the birds and the sound of the people taking holy bathes. In the evening, the Ganga Arti is taking place right at my doorsteps, literally! I feel so fully immersed in Varanasi now that it will be so hard to leave this place. If you are going to Varanasi, give The Palace on the Steps on Rana Ghat a shot!

Okay is India and okay you cannot expect the best, at least a little hot water in the morning... no is too much! The view is nice, so if you are planning to go and swim in the Gangee, that is okay, do not plan to use facilities in there as they will not work for sure, the staff is friendly and the tea expensive... we had overall a nice stay, THANKS TO GOD ONLY 2 NIGHTS!
At least when you leave the hotel, the guide that takes you around called Shivam, is very good, friendly patient and knows exactly where to take you, something important around the labirinth that Varanasi is.

If you really want to go to this fantastic hotel make sure you ask for Shivam, is the only good part overall ;o)

P.s. Watch out from cow poo, is VERY slippery!

My friends and I stayed at Palace on Stepss, and had a wonderful stay. When we were there in August, the hotel was very quiet and peaceful. The staff was very friendly and cuteous, and we received all of the help and guidance we needed in regards to our travels.
In terms of the hotel itself, we adored the roof-top-terrace, and got a great kick out of the neighbouring monkeys.

The View from Rm 204 was great. Room was comfortable. The access to the river, city & other places of interest was very easy. All within walking distance. If trying to get to hotel by vehicle, As for all hotels located on ghats, get the hotel to pick you up, as for a person traveling for the first time it is very difficult to locate. The Management lets you use the internet free of charge. The service is honest. They honour their word.

the worst hotel of varanasi ever seen and exprienced by me . we were in varanasi for three day vacations and it was suggested to us by travel agent of new delhi . promises made by agent about this hotel were vague . charging was crazy...........services were worst than given in a inn . restaurant view very majestic but services and quality of food very awful . think twice before booking this worthless hotel .

ask for room 206!!! it's a dome-shaped doubleroom with a great view over the Ganges and very special! (used to be the meditation room of the Maharadscha) it's very simple, but clean!
but beware of the monkeys. so keep the french window closed, when you're gone.
the service is keen to help. when there was no running water one evening they tried as long as it worked again. they also organized the early morning boattrip for us (300 rupies/2 hours for 2 people)
internet could be used for free at the front desk.
the attached restaurant "sunrise" had good food, but a quite slow service in the morning.
