“Best Bet in Varanasi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2010

If you are venturing to Varanasi and want to stay in the best local hotel, Hotel Haifa is the place to be. With a kind and accommodating staff, safe clean food, a money exchanger in the hotel and access to the internet this is the best you can get while in a safe area and only a very short walk to the Ganga. Hotel Haifa is wonderful!

I stayed at Hotel Haifa thanks to a recommendation from a friend who spends extended periods in Benares. As another reviewer mentions, it was indeed difficult to make a booking (no response to my e-mail for several days)--but once I arrived, I was very pleasantly surprised from start to finish. Rooms were very clean, and desk staff incredibly helpful and friendly; the travel desk is helpful and there is free wireless internet. When the heater proved inadequate, they went out of their way to rustle up a better one. The food in the restaurant was quite decent and very reasonably priced (though takes a very long time to come). This is not a luxury hotel (hot water was fitful in my room), but for $25/night it was superb value in an excellent and relaxing part of town. Highly recommended!

For everything that Varanassi offers or is, the Hotel Haifa is a welcome refuge from tghe outside world.
Only stayed the one evening but staff were ever helpful and facilities immaculate.
Ate a late evening meal in the restaurant which was really yummy and inexpensive.

We didn't actually stay here, but checked out a room but turned and found another place. The reason why is as follows... I sent a reservation through the form on their website, after three-four days and no repsonse I sent an email to the booking email and jumped on the train the next days. When we arrived early in the morning we were far from greeted by some person who seemed to be annoyed with new arrivals, and had no clue of what he was doing. After some one way conversation and hardly any respons he agreed to show me the cheapest nonac room, which was nice and clean, looked good for the price.
BUT, the room was allready booked, he found out after he showed me... and what happened to my mails? He found some other guy who told us they might have a room for us after noon, but after the freezing cold welcome we got the h'''' out of there and down to the Assi Ghat where we found a really nice place, cheaper and with a balcony and view towards the Ganga.

This is by no means a fantastic hotel - my room was average and the food was nothing special. Location of the facility is the best thing about this hotel

I stayed here with 2 friends. We made a reservation the day before. Each of us got our own room and attached bathroom, which were small but decent enough for about $20, though my friend's room had an odd, mildewy smell. At night, we watched a bit of Slumdog Millionaire which was playing in Hindi on TV, and my friends watched a squash game.

For dinner, I got the vegetarian thali for around $2, and it was pretty good. In the morning, I got the banana honey pancakes, the best pancakes I'd had in India. (Tip: Since Indians don't understand the concept of syrup, make sure you get the banana honey pancakes. Banana pancakes will get you a plain banana pancake, no syrup.)

In the morning, we woke up at 5 am to take a boat ride down the river. The air was horrible from 24 hr cremations, and we saw a dead body floating very close to our boat, but this city was very peaceful with nice architecture. If we weren't working in India, it would've been nice to spend more time in Varanasi exploring the restaurants and shops in the alleyways and taking a yoga, Hindi, or meditation course. However, we didn't have the luxury of staying more time in Varanasi.

All in all, I would stay at this hotel again, if I ever come back to Varanasi. While not luxurious, the hotel was decent and clean.

We had heard of Hotel Haifa from a friend who had praised it. So when we were in Varanasi without any reasonable online booking available, we drove to the hotel. We saw a couple of rooms and chose one without a balcony (the cost for a room with a balcony was more). The double room was priced at Rs. 1000 per day. That was a little too steep for the small room. The room had a television set (not very useful, when there is no power).

We booked the room, and as it was not ready, we went out for some sightseeing and returned around lunch time. There was no power supply and we were told the power would come on later in the afternoon. This of course meant that the air-conditioner could not be used most of the hot afternoon -- and the sun was blazing on a huge window with a thin curtain. Most good hotels have generators which are used then there is a break in the power supply.

We had lunch at the restaurant. The restaurant boasts of cuisines of different kinds, particularly middle-eastern. However, we had a vegetarian Indian thali lunch. The price and amount of food was reasonable, but it was too spicy and oily.

The power did come on later, and the air-conditioner could be used at night.

The next morning, we needed hot water for an early shower. There was a geyser, but it gave no hot water. We were told to keep the tap running for 10 minutes, and then hot water would start coming. But even after a longer time, nothing happened. The reception sent a boy to take a look. He checked and found there was no hot water. He did nothing, and went away, leaving dirty foot-marks on the floor. The reception did not do anything. We had to manage with a cold-water shower. Apparently, they have solar heaters for water, and when the sun is not bright enough, there is a standby electric heater. But neither worked that day.

We used the restaurant again for breakfast. We were close to a table where someone was smoking. So we moved to another table. But there another person lit up. We were shocked to find that the room displayed a sign asking people not to smoke. We pointed out to the restaurant manager that it is against the law to let people smoke in public places, and that there should be a separate place for smokers. He said that these foreigners do not listen to us.

In short, the hotel was overpriced, it was not comfortable, lacking in some basic amenities like power generators and water heating, and the staff were neither cooperative nor friendly.

  • Liked — That it was available when I needed it
  • Disliked — The amenities
