“Nice Heaven in Chaotic Varanasi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2013

From the moment we arrived we felt very welcome at Harish and Malika's home.
Harish is constantly caring for his guests, offering insights into his city, explaining the Hindu religion, Indian traditions, etc. Malika, "The Boss", is a sweetheart and the perfect Indian chef. We had dinner at their place and it was delicious.
Breakfast is simple, but very tasty. If it had more fruits, it would have been better.
Our room was in good condition, clean and the beds were fantastic (hard, the way we like them!). The bathroom though (not a fully enclosed Western-type shower) could get a face-lift. Although a shower curtain separates the shower from the sink and toilet, we had water all over the place because the floor is single leveled. The towels were in bad shape too: hard, old, and looked/felt more like rugs.
Location is good. It's a little bit far from the ghats, but ideal to relax from the chaos of the city.
Overall, a very nice stay and we truly recommend it!

Thank you very much dear Guest to have taken time to write about the Homestay. We have taken your complaint seriously and some of the old towels are being replaced with new ones today itself.
Regarding the Bathrooms,as you have seen dear guest, ours is a genuine Homestay (A family home) and it was not built like a professional hotel, and we want all future guest also to know, this place is for the experience of living with an Indian family and to exchange culture and we surely do not have the infrastructure to match any big star hotel, so please come to enjoy your stay with all basic facilities and share good time with my family.

Looking forward to serving you again in the future, dear Guest. Wishing you all the best in life.Best Regards.Harish

Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted by Harrish, the owner. Within minutes we felt at home: In a very relaxed atmosphere, clean room, hot water and wireless. Harrish, and his wonderfully accomplished daughter Ananya made sure that we were safe, and made every effort to guide us in the right direction on a daily basis. If it were not for this family, our trip to Varanasi (Benarres) would have been just a normal sight seeing adventure. Instead, we were invited to partake in Harrish's family events learned of the culture, ate the best meals ever every evening and breakfast at his home, cooked by his lovely wife Malika and had the pleasure of being guided by Ananya on personal adventures from the Ganges -to the back streets of Varanasi. Our only problem, and with sadness, we could only stay for four nights. We learned so much from Harrish and family. Anyone would be fortunate to score a future reservation at Home Stay.

The owner, Harish, and his family are wonderful, as are the rooms and home cooked meals. I would not stay any where else! Not only do you stay in incredibly comfortable rooms, but you can learn so much from the family and other travelers.

To repeat the previous reviews - Homestay is fantastic. The family are so welcoming. Harish does everything possible to make your stay in Varanasi enjoyable and he will make any arrangements you need to explore the city. Ananya, his daughter, is an excellent guide as she takes you on a walking tour through the maze of alleys, pointing out interesting sites and shops where you get fair prices.

Down a quiet side street the location allows you to get away from the busy streets. Rooms are clean and the shower hot. The food is probably the best we had in India.

Varanasi is not for the faint hearted! But staying at the HOMESTAY gave us a peaceful retreat to come to and relax. The meals cooked by Malika are divine and Harish can organise all your activities with ease and professionalism. The rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable. Plenty hot water and toilet paper which were two things we found hard to find in India! They have a shared tip box which you can donate to at the end of your stay which is voluntary. Thank you for looking after us. We would definitely recommend your accommodation to our friends and family.

The polite and eager to serve behavior of Mr. and mrs. Harish overtakes all the shortcomings of this home stay. The pure veg food though expensive is simply excellent.
The super deluxe room I was given was very clean and big with nice furniture though the bath room was small but with good fittings and 24 hrs. running hot water.
Big old style a bit noisy bed with clean linen.Towel though clean but looked old and should be replaced.
Now the minus:(1)General brand window AC is so noisy that if you switch it on for 15 minutes it gives you headache.
(2)A very tiny TV with wire and switch board hanging gives a dharamsala look to the room though they have installed Tata Sky connection.
(3) The fan regulators are also not working hence if you put on the fan it runs full blast.
(4) The entrance of the home stay is from a very narrow lane and there is no parking facility for your car though over the phone before booking I was assured parking will be provided.
(5) There is no facility for driver not even a toilet.
Will not stay here again and not recommend to friends. Overall a 7/10

Dear Shree Patni,

Thanks for taking time to write about us at tripadvisor.

We felt honored to have you as a guest at our home. We have always tried to do our best to serve all guest in the highest traditions of Indian hospitality and i would like to clarify here some issues you have mentioned, pictures and size of our bathroom are on website,so all guest can see these before they book, and,i am surprise with you finding our beds as NOISY as we have always been told by our guest that our beds are the most comfortable they have ever slept in during their India travel,up on your complaint i have personally checked both fan regulators and they are working properly, regarding AC,we have fixed the highest and most expensive brand of O'General ACs in our rooms and you are the first guest to complain about these, regarding location and facility for the driver, you were categorically told on the phone by me personally that we have no place to sleep the driver in our home,so i beg to differ with you as you are claiming the opposite, and it is your driver who insisted on taking the car with himself and refused to park at our home,as far as the Cable wire of the TV hanging out side, when our home was built in 1936,LCD/LED TVs were not in existence, and these are fixed as after thought and we are yet to open and dig our walls to insert these Cable wires inside the walls and we thank you for your kind mentioning of these and we promise you, this will be done in next lean season of Summers,as this is not a electrical wire it is harmless.Even though you have decided not to stay with us in your future visits, but me and Malika would certainly like to have you back with us,and we will certainly try to make you more comfortable here at Homestay. So please do come back and let us know what special arrangements you would like.Regards.Malika & Harish

I arranged Home Stay at Varanasi for my mom and her 2 friends to spend around 10 days during Deepavali time. My mom and her friends had a wonderful time with Harish and Family. They asked me to write a review on behalf of them. Room was bigger, spacious and Clean. Daily mineral water bottles were provided to them. Break fast was very nice , bread and Jam was prepared by Mrs. Mallika Harish in hygienic environment which were so tasty.
At the time of Booking Homestay, Mr.Harish helped me in designing the itinerary for my mom & her friends. They wanted to visit Allahabad, Ayodhya and Gaya apart from staying in Kasi. Mr. Harish offered tips on places to be visited in Varanasi, Allahabad, Ayodhya and Gaya. Also he arranged very good stay in those places. He also helped in arranging Innova (Mr. Misra)for outstation travel and arranged auto rikshaw wala (Mr.Rampal) for local varanasi visit. Both drivers were so helpful , kind and had patience to took my mom and her friends to all the places.
My mom and her friends wanted to perform "Pooja" for which Mr.Harish referred south Indian Prohit and my mom was quite happy with that arrangement.
Overall my mom and her friends enjoyed the trip , felt safe and comfortable. They would like to recommend her friends to stay in "Home stay" at Varanasi. My mom said that it is "home away from home".

Shree,
Chennai
