“Over-rated and expensive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2011

We thought this guesthouse was over-rated and expensive for what you get. It is in the Lonely Planet guidebook which seems to mean they charge more and won't bargain on the room price. If you are visiting Agra for the Taj Mahal this is several kilometres away so you would be better off staying in Taj Ganj. The courtyard is nice and cool, but they will want you to buy food (over-priced with not much choice on the menu) or drinks if you are sitting there. Our room was clean and tidy but didn't have a hot shower as promised.

What a terrible excuse for a hotel! By far the worst place we stayed during a 3 month trip to India.

They cancelled our reservation for some reason, even though it was confirmed, so we arrived to find that we didn't have a room. They finally squeezed the 4 of us into a tiny space. There were rat droppings (not mouse, rat) in the bathroom, and all night we could hear the rats running around in there. When you add on the people yelling outside our room at 3am, it didn't make for a good night of sleep. The better rooms were all right and not too expensive. However, they smelled very strange, almost like gasoline, and we never had hot water even though we paid for it. Electricity was also a problem.

The staff were thoroughly unhelpful and rude. One example among many: we booked a taxi to Delhi airport for the day we were leaving. We checked with them 3 times to make sure it was confirmed. On the day, it was obvious that no one has booked it. We ended up waiting 45 min while they told us repeatedly to "sit down". We barely made our flight and the taxi ended being on of the worst we had in India. The "manager" was one of the nastiest men I've ever dealt with.

The food was awful. We only had one meal there and managed to get a curdled lassi and curdled porridge. The toast was terrible. We never ate there again.

If you have to stay here, pick a room upstairs, do not eat in the restaurant, and don't expect much.

I've stayed at this hotel several times over the years and always been impressed by the service offered.
The hotel has clean rooms with and without A/C and a pleasant garden restaurant offering excellent pure vegetarian food.
I thoroughly recommend this hotel as the best value backpacker/budget accommodation in Agra.

Room Tip: various classes of rooms are available with A/C, fridge, but all with hot water and TV. See a few...

This hotel is clean enough to lay your backpack 2 or 3 nights but its far from perfect.
First, the price in Lonely Planet can induce you wrong.
It is written rooms go from 250 to 550 and 750 with AC.
But the truth is they show us a small room with a tiny bathroom without hot water for 450 and gave us a room a bit bigger with hot water for 650 rupees. And It was not one of their best room.
When I asked about the prices, just saying about the guide book, they told me the good rooms are 750, 850 and 1000 rupees.
Then, when i asked if i could make a local phone call, they said they have no phone, however the phone was just in front of me... And that I called them for booking.
Last, if you take a shower in the evening, you take it with 15 mosquitos as they don t cover the air hole in the corner.
The restaurant they have is quite cheap and the food is okey, with a good atmosphere in the evening. Though, if you stay somewhere else, it don t worth going just for their restaurant.

One of my favourite hostels in India, loved our time there. Can't say enough nice things about the people who ran it

Myself and my boyfriend have been travelling around india for a month and we stayed here last week for one night. We were really pleased with our choice. Bedrooms were spotlessly clean and comfortable. The staff are so helpful, and they have a couple of on-site Rickshaw drivers who will take you wherever you want to go, even at 6 am and Rickshaw prices are very reasonable. The staff also gives excellent advice on places to avoid, people to look out for and activities to do.
My only beef was that we had booked the "spacious double room" but when we got there we were told that it wasn't available, despite having confirmed my booking twice by email! But the room we got was more than adequate. I think the only difference was a tv and maybe air con? But I wouldn't have had the air con on anyway, nor would we have sat in the room watching the tv! So it worked out for the better. Room price was 450Rs for the night. Wifi reached the room and was fast and reliable. Wifi costs 100Rs for 24 hours. Food is ok, nothing great but large portions and not too expensive considering you are in a tourist hotel. Whatever you do, don't let the outside of the hotel bring you down when you first arrive. It really doesn't look like much. But the courtyard inside is lovely and peaceful and rooms are safe. As well as wifi you have a computer in the hotel (old!) but no USB connection. (whatever you do, don't connect your camera USB into an Internet cafe computer- they will corrupt your card!happened to ours and now we have to send it off to a techy!) Sheets and towels were very clean, bathroom clean but not spotless. No hot water for those who like it (I don't mind cold showers as it was hot when we visited) Saw or heard no mice/rats as previously mentioned- and we stayed on ground floor so would have noticed if there were. I am a clean freak and I was very happy with this place. Don't go anywhere in India expecting western standards- unless you are paying through the nose and staying in a give star, YOU WILL NOT GET IT! Free pick up from the station, all food is billed to your room and you pay at the end. Travellers of all ages, met people 20 to 65 here, great place to meet others.

Instead of fluffing up this review with adjectives like horrible, terrible and "hell-on-earth" (no matter how true they are), I will simply give a list of facts about my 3 day stay at Tourists Rest House.
1. The unfriendly, filthy and non-responsive staff gave away our reservation before we got there so we were forced to sleep 4 to one room for the first night. They were completely unapologetic and gave no explanation.
2. There was rat poop (not small mouse, actual rat poop) in our bathroom and a rat scurrying around in there all night (along with yelling by the staff at 4am outside).
3. Though no live bed bugs were present thankfully, the sheets and towels were filthy, with blood and other questionable stains on them.
4. They claim to offer hot water in some rooms, but you won't get any. Or any help if you complain.
5. Wifi only works in a couple of places in the guest house (not the rooms) and only when the electricity is actually on, which wasn't all the time.
6. All dairy products we were served were rancid and we found dirt and tabacco in much of the food.
7. We ordered a taxi 2 days in advance and confirmed it twice with the front desk. They never actually ordered a taxi for us and we were forced to wait for 45 minutes and nearly miss our flight. They offered no explanation, only told us to sit down over and over again.

In short, don't stay here. Even though it's fairly cheap, it is not worth it at all. Never have I experienced so much filth, lack of work ethic and rotten food in one place.

Room Tip: If you have to stay here, go for the second floor. There seemed to be less vermin in those.
