3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2008

We stayed for 2 nights at the Taj View while visiting Agra. To be honest we didn't spend a lot of time in the hotel but we found it to be fairly average. We chose it because it was the delux option in the kuoni brochure which did leave us wandering what the standard and medium hotels were like, compared to other hotels on the tour such as le meridien in jaipur it certainly wasn't as delux. We did have a Taj view (just) - i think the website says all rooms are Taj view but they aren't. Also having a Taj view room means you are at the front of the hotel which looks onto a busy road and we were kept awake most of the night by wedding celebrations in the street, considering you can barely see the taj mahal through the haze in the distance I'd opt for the quieter back rooms.

The restaurant was very average, breakfast was chaos as the place was busy.

The room was nice, quite spacious and nicely furnished with a small but good bathroom. we were too busy to use the pool but the gardens looked nicely kept.

As we said about the Taj palace in Dehli, the hotel was fine for our purpose but it certainly wasn't 5 star, however there's too much to see and do in Agra to be spending much time in the hotel.

Having stayed at two other Taj hotels in India (Land's End and Exotica) we were expecting much more when we booked this hotel. It's old, the rooms need work, and the restaurant is just so so. Pool area is pretty. Check in person didn't seem to know what to do and kept asking questions when I presented her with my Taj Inner Circle card.

For the first timer, Agra and Taj Ganj, the area surrounding the Taj Mahal and to a certain extent the TM itself are not perhaps what you might expect. Frenetic doesn't prepare you for the number of people that you will see on the street and state of buildings etc. as you approach the monuments. Put any romantic images away and brace yourself for the reality that unfolds as you arrive.

For that reason alone the Taj Mahal provides a welcoming and comfortable oasis for those who want it. The area behind offers a calm garden, which includes a well-presented swimming pool, dining area, fitness room and small spa. The restaurant and bar area were great and breakfast was an abundance of Western and Indian cuisine.

We requested a room with seating area on a high floor and we got what we asked for. It included a view of the TM for what it's worth, although unless there's a full moon you won't see it at night, likewise if there is a layer of haze, which we found omnipresent. Don't let that put you off though because you're bound to visit the TM anyway so no need to gaze only from the room. What's most important is that it is clean, comfortable, fairly priced and good (although as usual eager) service is provided.

I can see why people who have visited other Taj hotels would be disappointed, but for 6,000 rupees and a reality check that we were in Agra and not Mumbai or some outlying resort, I thoroughly recommend the hotel for a short to medium length stay in the city.

Stayed two nights in mid February. After reading Tripadvisor reviews, we specified a view of the Taj Mahal. We were on the fifth floor in a comfortable deluxe room and certainly had a good if rather distant view. The staff were obliging and the room was very clean. We didn’t use the grand front restaurant but had an excellent buffet supper on the first night in the more informal dining room at the back overlooking the garden and found the price reasonable for a large hotel. Breakfast was equally good. In the foyer a man was performing classical Indian dance on a small stage. The stylised dance was fascinating and I’m only sorry for the dancer that no-one else took the slightest notice. Quite a nice garden around the pool.

Adverse comments have been made in reviews about the noise from the road outside. Well it is India and life has to go on outside, usually at an enormously lower standard than that enjoyed by the hotel’s guests. Seeing the grand sights (none grander than the Taj Mahal!) but otherwise being isolated from experiencing the surrounding city life seems to miss the point of travel. On the contrary, if you have a photographer’s eye for Indian street scenes, there is no better place than standing outside this hotel’s gates. In half an hour I saw a wedding, a high speed funeral procession, almost every type of four legged animal and about a million vehicles most of which were heavily laden. We got up early to see the sublime Taj Mahal at sunrise and still felt overwhelmed at breakfast afterwards.

On a clear day in Agra you can see the Taj Mahal off in the distance from the hotel. The grounds are beautiful, eat outside when you can. The breakfast buffet was quite varied with lots of choices between European and Indian cuisine. The room was small but nicely decorated. The staff was quite nice. One night there were musicians playing the Sitar and Tabla in the lobby, quite nice.

We did not intentionally include a stop at Agra on our recent trip to Rajasthan however the travel agent insisted as it also worked for a train connection to our next stop. After 12 long days driving around Rajasthan and having less than acceptable hotel experiences along the way I was happily looking forward to staying in a Taj property again. Silly me for picturing the serene, sublime quality of the Taj Lake Palace and setting my hopes and expectation for a soothing stay at the Taj View. That fantasy was quickly burst. A superior room was booked for us which I had been assured would be facing the mausoleum. That was not the case. I was quite upset and tired from nursing a sick husband. Eventually the hotel came up with an ‘upgrade’. Sadly the room we were given was dingy with shabby carpets and stale fabrics from being smoked in. (note to hotel managers: Spraying air fresheners masks problems when a thorough cleaning is the only solution to fix a stinky room.) The room had twin beds and I was told that this was the hotel standard. I asked for a non- smoking room as per our reservation however none were available and that the room was “close” to non-
smoking rooms elsewhere on the same floor. This was laughable as when getting off the elevator the entire floor stunk of smoke.

My husband was feeling terrible and wanted to have a hot bath. There was no hot water so he tried boiling the kettle (silly man) and tried to fill the bathtub that way. He was obviously delirious. Fortunately our train to Jhansi left early the next morning and we couldn’t wait to be on the road again.

The best hotel in Agra is the Oberoi where all rooms face the Taj Mahal.

  • Liked — There was nothing to like about this hotel.
  • Disliked — The Taj View left me wanting to get out of town fast.
