“Simple, but clean and nice food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2012

I stayed there only for one night. The service was really good and the staff friendly. It was close to the Taj Mahal and my room had a view of the Taj (a bit far, but who cares, it's still the taj).
the room was clen, but the bed not really comfortable.
The buffet offered a good selection of local and western alternatives, also for breakfast. I would go back without hesitating.

Room Tip: Chose a room with a view of a Taj Mahal if you can

All you need to say about The Gateway is that The TAJ has been impeccable during my Sixteen years of travel. A Hotel where you would love to come back to.... The Hotel might be in need of a make over but the Staff as usually leads the Hospitality industry in India... After all its a Taj Group Hotel... Need I say more???

Room Tip: The 5th Floor Rooms facing the Taj are the best....

This hotel thought of everything to accommodate the Western needs. From psychics or palmists in the lobby, to gracious uniformed guards hosting the elevators. It's beautifully laid out, but overall the hotel has a musty odor on the upper floors that assails you as soon as you get off the elevator.
The food is lavishly and creatively presented - a bit too lavishly. While the food is abundant and the variety endless, it lacks unique tastes. Many of the deserts sort of blend together. A simpler tastier selection would be much better. The wait staff in the restaurant was plentiful, but getting someone to clear the plates or bring tea or coffee was impossible. We constantly called out to waiters who simply looked the other way. So service was lacking.
Bedrooms overlook a wall of glass that is the bathroom so anyone in the bathroom or bedroom can see each other. Though there are shades for privacy its a bit interesting.
As in most of India, its hard to get change for large sized rupees. Large means 1000 rupees or $20. This hotel did have change but the woman at the front desk made sure to give guests the dirtiest bills she had in the drawer. A real turnoff.

Room Tip: Rooms are sizeable with sitting areas

It is very well located fairy close to the Taj Mahal. The hotel is not very nice and rooms are crying out for renovation. It is OK just to spend 1 night, no more. Room windows are not properly isolated so not suitable for light sleepers. 3 out of 5.

Room Tip: Some rooms have views to the Taj. Try to get one of those!

Room with a view – but what a surprise to see the Taj surrounded by so much development. This is a TAJ hotel which really could do with a makeover – it is quite shabby in places, especially the coffee shop/restaurant. However, the staff are friendly, the service is very good and there is some wonderfully quirky entertainment in the lobby. The bar is tiny but cosy and we had a seriously good meal in the Jhankar restaurant.

Room Tip: Taj Mahal view rooms are worth it - though you will be surprised at the setting!

Once again, having to go through security to enter a hotel is something to get used to. This hotel is starting to look a little old and tired. We did have a view of the Taj and they were cleaning the windows that day as others we were travelling with commented on their view was obstructed because of the dirty windows. Rooms were clean though, the bathrooms small. There were power surges throughout the day. Wi-fi pkgs available. paying for something that should be incld. started to be a common complaint among other travellers and ourselves. The buffet was mixed and large but there was no outdoor eating offered. The pool and area were really nice, but we had little time to enjoy even though we stayed for two nights. The staff were very pleasant.

This is a hotel positioned in the upscale economy / executive segment of the Taj Group of Hotels. It is not in the Luxury segment of the Taj Group but immediately on entry we felt the unmistakable warm Taj ambience. From the welcome drink to the ultra courteous doorman, bellboy and front desk we were so impressed.

The room was reasonably clean and spacious and along with the decor was consistent with the hotel category and positioning. (So do not expect 5-star paying for 3-star).

What floored us was the awesome herbal toiletries they put in the bath ... that was 5-star no doubt. Keep it up Taj.

The buffet breakfast is the other definite highlight .. not to be missed at any cost. Good quality once again and great spread too. From Continental to Indian fare to fresh fruits. Fill up and it can keep you going till dinner.

The Taj Mahal is not far at all but dont miss the camel ride.

Room Tip: In the winter it stays foggy till at times noon. So even though they promise Taj View from Room I wo...
