“Room with a view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

The service was excellent as were the meals. The architecture and decor of the hotel are stylish -if a touch over-stated - and the ratio of space to guests is exceptional. THE feature, however, is and must be the views of the Taj from the ground floor lounge and from every bedroom. They really are out of this world. A true luxury experience and one to be savoured!

We stayed for 2 nights in a Premier Balcony room which gave a wonderful view of the iconic Taj Mahal. The room was really comfortable and looked out onto beautiful gardens with the tomb in the background. The only negative was that sitting outside on the balcony was noisy as there was a religious festival taking place.

Our stay coincided with Mother's Day and the hotel sent some lovely biscuits with a chocolate greeting plaque - nice touch!.

We ate in the all day dining restaurant and enjoyed good food with a wide range of choice. I used the spa and had a lovely massage but sadly did not have time to sit by the pool. The pool area looked very inviting!

With its proximity to the Taj Mahal, fabulous grounds and wonderful staff this really is a stunning hotel. Beware if you want to connect to the internet as it is expensive!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for posting your reviews on Trip advisor with regards to your recent stay at The Oberoi Amarvilas. I am happy to read that you enjoyed your visit and your positive feedback is appreciated. This definitely helps us and our teams to stay motivated.

Due to festive season, nearby township can be noisy with celebrations. You have travelled during the colourful festival of Holi which is one of the most important festivals according to the Hindu mythology. I hope our distinctive services will tempt you to return with us in not so distant future.

Thank you

Slick corporate style hotel. Totally lacking in ambiance. The first exception on our trip of indifferent service (only in the breakfast restaurant). I did comment on this in the review they ask you to fill in and hand in to reception but never heard anything back except a round robin email received today saying they hoped we had enjoyed our stay! Typical result of staying in a large impersonal hotel catering for bus loads of tourists and business people.
The reason I've given them 4 stars is the hotel is exactly what you'd expect from a chain and faultless in that respect and the rest of the staff were exceedingly nice as they were everywhere we stayed but I would recommend staying in a smaller heritage hotel.

The headline for my review is exactly how I approached the extra expense, that staying at this 'palace' of a hotel, would mean!
My partner and I, being normal people from working backgrounds, would never have afforded ourselves this kind of opulence. However, after reviewing this Hotel beforehand, and knowing that each room with balcony overlooked the TAJ, I spoke with her and said,"We're going 'all-out' on this one!".... "We are only going to have this experience ONCE, to see one of the 8 Wonders Of The World,.... so, let's make it a good one!"
I can say to you that it is an expense that you will never, ever, regret! The Oberoi AmarVilas gives you the feeling that you are 'actually' staying in a 'Palace', and you are treated accordingly, throughout your stay. We stayed for 2 days only, but they are two days that will never be erased from our minds. If you can accept that everything is perfect,..... then, this is the Hotel that will make you feel that!
Yes,... we only entered The Taj Mahal once,... the rest of the time The Taj was right there in front of us. From your room,it was like having front-row seats at your favourite opera, or show! You never had to move!...... There, in front of you, is The Magnificent Taj Mahal, and you are enjoying it in absolute luxury!
These days, you can pay as much for the right seats to your preferred show performance,..... therefore I feel that the cost is to be absorbed, and suggest that to you!
The Taj is right there in your presence, and you can simply indulge yourselves in witnessing it's Majesty, from the most desirable front-row-seat!....... Which is your ROOM!
The grounds and the pool are magnificent, and should you choose, you can take your evening meal by the pool,.... in Candlelight!..... All this area is lit by hundreds of candles, and if you want to create a second honeymoon,.... Then go-for-it!
From the moment you arrive, until that awful time when you have to leave, this Hotel provides you with the unique experience of viewing The Romantic Taj Mahal, in all it's glory!
I promise you that it will be a time in your life that you will remember, vividly, forever!

Room Tip: There is no secret to this Hotel. Each and every room faces The Taj, and has it's own balcony...

Agra was stop off number 2 on our golden triangle tour of India before heading to Jaipur and then onto Goa. The train from Delhi to Agra was most definitely the way to travel (despite the fog which limited our views) as it gave you a small sense of normality outside the tourist bubble ( don't worry though no chickens/goats sharing frost class more like bored commuters a equally apprehensive looking tourists)

Agra isn't that pretty, the Taj is spectacular and the Oberoi currently sits as one of the best run most professional hotels I have ever stayed at. The rooms, restaurants and pool are all excellent but the service culture is the thing that stays with me. Genuine interest in you as an individual and continual unobtrusive attempts to go beyond expectations appeared to be in every one of the hotel staff attitude that we came across....really impressive. I don't want to write down all the examples for fear they may become the norm or somehow undermine your experience but as a reasonably well travelled and cynical Yorkshireman this hotel really impressed me....my only advice would be go if you can afford it there is simply nowhere better in town and when you are there let your guard down and let this fabulous staff look after you.

On a more practical note the balcony rooms are magnificent and the view of the Taj is something a bit special. The food in the hotel is geared toward predominantly Foreign/American taste so if you like your food with some flavour/spice then please let your server know....and be met by another genuine beaming smile .....tandoori Raan (leg of Lamb)and Biryani both "asian spiced" come with my recommendations.

Best Hotel of the Holiday - Thank you

Room Tip: Its got to have a Balcony !

Dear Guest,

Thank you for posting your reviews on trip advisor. I am happy to read your comments and it gives me pleasure to share your review with all members of the staff.

Traveling by train is definitely one of the most comfortable ways to reach us in Agra. However, now with the new express way we are not far from Delhi and takes you less than 3 hours to reach Agra by road. I am delighted to learn that hotel services and team impressed you at The Oberoi Amarvilas. We take lot of care in recruting and training our teams so that we can exceed our guest expectations.

My team joins me in welcoming you back to The Oberoi Amarvilas.

Thank you

The Taj Mahal is extraordinary as much for what it is as how it has escaped the banality of cliché. For 350 years, this monument evokes a sense of wonder. Only by being there can you witness its true majesty, its symmetry, its setting and the delicacy of its carved marble inlaid with precious stones. Now just suppose you were to overlook it from your hotel room? The Oberoi Amarvilas is 600 metres from this tribute to love. The lavish interiors and elaborate gardens add to the serenity of the scene. The guestrooms are palatial: all have magical views and are luxuriously furnished with traditional fabrics, white marble, hand-crafted ornaments and every modern amenity. There is a luxury spa offering a range of therapies, a swimming pool where snacks and drinks are served; an ornamented ballroom and fine restaurants to suit the international palate. But the lobby lounge is a feast for the eye designed, as it was, around that glorious view of the Taj Mahal. ... more   less
