August 2009: I actually won a free stay voucher for the Nahar Residency and decided to take a chance. Did quite a lot of research before I reached there.
True to what others had commented, the Nahar residency hotel is situated right in the middle of the Ooty main bazaar and if you didn;t have a local auto/taxi driver with you, you would surely miss it as the entrance looks more like a shop.
The hotel has a small reception area, definitely more appealing than the entrance. The rooms however are pretty clean and comfortable. Having been to a lot of hillstations, I was satisfied with the quality of the rooms as I did not expect 5-star facilities. The staff was very courteous and helpful. They were able to arrange a room for us when we reached at 7 :00 a.m even though the check in time is 12:00 noon. The room service is prompt.
The food in the hotel is not bad. It is at par with other known places. There really aren't many great places to eat in Ooty, so after a day full of sightseeing, you can actually have a sumptuous vegetarian meal back in your hotel room at Nahar. It is preferable to order food using room service than eat in the restaurant which is musty and cramped. Facilities like hot water , drinking water, cable TV are available in the room. For any issues, the staff is available immediately to help. They also helped us book the taxi for our daily sightseeing and did suggest places to see as well.
Being located right in the middle of the market, you can actually stroll around the shops and do some local shopping after your day tour. It is walking distance from the bus stand and the railway station.
All in all, a decent place to stay. There is so much to see in Ooty that your hotel would be the last thing you want to explore around. As long as all you need is a clean and comfortable place to retire after a long day, Nahar Residency serves the purpose.
