“Stay in ooty”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2011

I have been using internet in getting reviews about products, places, etc. for quite some time and this time something made me write my first review. I had been planning for a small trip with my wife for quite sometime and somehow chose Ooty. Based on inputs from the net & few friends we zeroed in on Hotel Nahar. These were few points I wanted to share about the stay we had in the Hotel.

Booking : I had to call the reception for booking as their website was down.I called three times and my name was noted down only on the third attempt,on my interest, though in each call they told that phone booking is enough. We got a deluxe room confirmed.I couldn't really guess if their attitude was lethargic since they didnt bother to note down the name/phone number, though couple of managers sounded professional.[talked with three managers :)]

Reception: We anticipated that we would reach Ooty @ around 7:00 AM, but reached at 5:30 AM. The manager(s) were not found and one of the securities attended and checked if we had booked in advance. We explained and we got the room.

Room & Cleanliness: We were given a room in the ground floor, which is actually a little lower than the normal ground floor. The room size was ok. The moment we entered the room, we found that it lacked ventilation and it was kind of damp as the floor was carpeted. The bathroom was also missing ventilation :(. The lights available in the room were also shaded and it doesn't really reveal the look of the room. We decided that we should change the room at the next available chance. We got a room in the upper floor and even there we found the room was not clean.[the bed spreads, towels in the bathroom]

Room service: I found the room service to be kind of made compulsive on the guests rather than attending on need basis. One such instance, we reached the room and in about 45 minutes, a guy shows up without you calling and starts pestering you with need for taxis for local sightseeing.TIPs should be given voluntarily and I found it to be on the contrary. They stand at the door till you give them tips :(.

Location : The hotel is very well located and is at a walkable distance to the Botanical Garden and shops.Bus-stand is also close by.(aprox 2 kms)

Pros: 1) The managers were flexible. They give you some grace period irrespective of your check-in/checkout time.[Not sure as to how it would be during peak season]
2) The restaurants and the food they served was hygienic when compared with a couple of other restaurants we tried.
3) The drivers from the hotel's travel desk were quite friendly.
4) The response on need basis was good.

Cons : 1) Cleanliness in the room was one thing we really missed. The towels were quite old, the bedspreads were not replaced and was dirty in both rooms were we stayed.
2) We felt the room service was kind of compulsive on certain occasions.

In short, a decent hotel to stay, but the room is not worth the money you pay, when compared with hotels in other towns/cities for the same price.

The hotel is very well located and comfortable. The food is great, but only veg and room service is a little slow.. The south Indian restaurant is excellent with genuine filter coffee... We had a great time...

Went there with my small daughter and wife. stayed there for one night.

The location of the hotel is very good. Very good hotel to go with a family. Stayed there for one night. Good food but only vegeterian food available. Rooms are slightly highly prices. room heater is charged extra.

Running hot water is available only in the morning or evening.

Nahar's Nilgiris hotel is situated in the heart of this hill station. Stayed here with my spouse and thoroughly enjoyed our little holiday. I will recommend it as it is conveniently located. Stepping in and out of this hotel leads you to the city's central street. Be it shopping or eating out, this is the best place to be in.
Their restaurant serves great food. Mix of south and north indian and other popular cuisine. We loved their food. Rooms are pretty neat. The gardens are well maintained and the sight of flowers in bloom is a welcome sight.
Service is a little slow, as the place is over crowded. Speaks of the popularity of this hangout. It is often difficult to get seating space at the restaurant. Parking is a tad bit difficult as the entrance is very narrow.

The first thing that would attract you is the location of the Hotel. It's located right on Charring Cross(The most happening place in Ooty!) and walking distance from the Botanical Garden. It's also got a good South Indian restaurant(Garden Restaurant) which serves authentic food and hence is mostly crowded and so one could experience delays in service sometimes, though worth a wait. The other restaurants attached to the hotel, Chandan & Sidewalk too are pretty decent.

The property wears a congested look inside with buildings set close to each other. There's just adequate parking space. The room is just ok and is priced a little higher for the value it offers. Do not make a booking on the hotel website, the hotel staff are just not aware of the fact that booking can be made from the hotel website and vehemently argue that it's a 3rd party site!!!!. The website would talk of promotional offer till 31st Dec 2010, with breakfast and wi-fi being inclusions, but all this become exclusions, the moment you book the room through the website. You bring this to the notice of the front office staff and all they put up is "I don't care" attitude.

The room service is good and the staff very courteous.

The hotel is an old property in Ooty. It needs to come a long way from being an erstwhile Super Deluxe lodge to a star property. This place is right for someone looking at merely a decent boarding & lodging in Ooty in the heart of the town.

I stayed in this hotel during December, 2009. The hotel is situated at Charing Cross, in the commercial road of Ooty. The botanical garden and rose garden are within 1-2 kms. Interestingly one SBI ATM is situated just opposite to the hotel, which was convenient for us. A Higgins Botham book store and the Ooty cooperative store is just opposite to the hotel. For visiting Coonoor, we have to take a taxi for railway station, from where we went by train (run by steam engine, some call it toy train). We have purchased a variety of home made chocolates and Tea packets, but other things we found very costly. The staffs are very much cooperative. I feel the price looks little bit at higher side, as many nearby hotels can be considered with cheaper price, though facilities are excellent here. I strongly recommend for the people who does not care for few extra bucks and are searching for a hotel with very good location in Ooty.

I found many shops with name as Nahar including a famous Jewelry store in Ooty.
