“Dinner at the EARL's SECRET located in the King's cliff hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012

We were not staying at the the Kings Cliff hotel ..... but just visited for couple of evenings and dinner at the Earl's Secret (which is the name of the resturant located in this hotel). We were there from 6 pm to 11 pm on two nights in November 2012.

LOCATION : The winding route which brings one to the top of the hill, on which this hotel is located, is breathtaking. The huge girth of many of the trees on the way to the hotel signifies the ripe old age and antiquity of the location. Within the compound, the hotel seemed spacious & heritage. Its far enough from the main city below to ensure solitude but near enough to reach the city with just a 5-7 minute drive....which is perfect.

AMBIANCE inside the hotel: This seems to be one of the best part of the hotel. There are only 9 rooms & Mr. Nazrul (the General manager of the hotel) was kind enough to show me a couple of them - even though we were not staying here. The rooms have a fireplace inside....Though this sounds very classy & rustic but from a practical view point i hope that this is not the only source of heat in the rooms....bcos a fireplace is good for 1-2 hours....then dies out and the smoke / smell can also be irritating if the fire is kept raging thruout the night.

The common areas of the hotel are absolutely bloody fantastic. The seats/ sofa's & the outside fireplace are very very comfy. Great place to sit alone and read a novel for hours....or an even greater place for friends n family to sit and chat. The ambience is very british, ancient & charming. The live music / entertainment makes it even more lovely.

Finally, the Resturant :- The Earl's secret was possibly the only resturant that i found in Ooty that can dish up a decent Continental offering. The continental menu was elaborate and whatever we ordered was available & was delicious. The ambience of the resturant making it even more palatable. The resurant does not serve liquor but you are free to bring your own.

The DOWNSIDE : - Since the hotel is small there is no where to run to if u are in bad / unruly company..... This hotel is meant to be a nice quaint but aristocratic place to enjoy a serene time. You can only hope that your luck is good and none of the blabbering/ jabbering / noisy / noveau rich families with their brat children or just group of friends are staying there with you. This hotel is best for rich, sophisticated, calm, aristocratic, mature people to spend a good time. (I hope the hotel screens their guests throughly before allowing them in).

I would love to stay in this hotel on my next trip to ooty.....alibeit only if the entire hotel (all 8-9 rooms) are booked only by me / our family and friends - in order to ensure that no idiotic people come around to spoil my quite, luxurious holiday. I sincirely wish that the hotel restricts kids (below the age of 18) from entering this magnificent property & i hope that the hotel management bends backwards to MAINTAIN the property such that it remains fit for a King to stay & also ensures immaculate express fast service.....even if it means charging more for the rooms.

Room Tip: There are only 8-9 rooms in totality....and even these are divided into 3 catagories!!. I suggest yo...

I want to first write negatives as I faced them: Bad room warming system, No internet service, extra charge on alternatives even if the main source doesnt work, the beds are not good in semi-deluxe rooms, cold air seeping through the windows.

Positives: Nice food, good service, nice staff,

Room Tip: Cold air seeping in through the windows even though they are cold. They keep charging you for every...

the grounds in this place are beautiful! there's a restaurant which serves delicious food- both the complementary buffet breakfast, and the a la carte dished that are available for other meals.
he staff were friendly and helpful! you can arrange tours/trips through the reception.
the room we took was the Tempest room. it was very comfortable and felt very luxurious. they come to light the fireplace in the evening, which was amazing in the chilly nights in Ooty. the room is quite large, and therefore was a bit cold. the only heating is the fireplace. still, best nights' sleep we had in india! very comfortable beds and quilts.
we were a bit surprised that at a hotel of this caliber they were not able to help us print out a paper copy of our flight ticket home. overall the service was good.

Room Tip: our room, Tempest didn't really have a view. delux rooms are more luxurious, larger. give you...

Every time I visit ooty{ From 2003 till now} - Make it a point to have atleast one meal in Kings Cliff- And everytime have come back totally satisfied. Well maintained heritage property. Would rate food 5/5. Friendly Staff. View from sitout specially night and walkable distance from main road makes place worth visit. Being Veg choices are good both chinese and northindian with special touch by chef{ Call it cliff touch!!!!}
Never stayed there{ Since officially stay in Nahar} though had look at the rooms
Must try - Soups/Panner starters and Bendi Starters
Never miss Blue berry dessert!!!! Simply out of world

A 100 year Raj property that has well maintained gardens. The period furniture itself is worth the stay. For history lovers, catch hold of the old, tall, bent, cranky-looking retainer who does not smile, for a guided tour of the photographs of Lord Reginald and Lady Mabyn getting married, with the local biggy Lord Havelock (whom the major Ooty road is named after) looking on benignly. He will even show you the tariff card from way back 1920's! Our room had a charming photo of the lady of the house, before she was married, standing next to her oil-portrait. There is something about this photo that made this whole trip worthwhile for me. Perhaps the way she is standing, happy and relaxed with fresh, wild flowers all over the house and her dog rushing up to her tail wagging. The place certainly has a soul; you can't take that away from it.

The fireplace was an absolute delight and luxury! It warmed up our room superbly all night. The room was comfortable, clean, cozy but small, but with the cold we didn't mind one bit. But rest assured, most other rooms on the property are bigger. I do think though, that at the time of booking, we should have been given some inkling that our semi-deluxe room would not have any view! One does generally go to Ooty to view the beauty, doesn't one? And, much to my chagrin, in the morning I was not woken by birds outside my non-window, but by servants loudly gargling in kitchen/pantry next door giving any gaggle of warring jungle babblers a run for their money.

But the main problem was - I had chosen this hotel because my husband needed a functional internet connection as he had a deadline. I confirmed that the hotel's internet was working when we left. Upon reaching we were told, that it was not working. This put quite a damper on things. And at night when we arrived, the hotel was not helpful on making any alternate arrangements for us at all. The staff seemed quite helpless compared to their peers at the Destiny Farm site run by same company.

Anyhow, moving on to the basics - food, fire and water. At dinner, the food was wonderful. Service was brisk. Extra hot water bottle, logs for fire, towels etc. were all provided briskly.
One of the few rooms to have a bathtub was ours, but we could not use it because it was dirty. One expects a certain level of antiquity and dust in a heritage site, but bathtub grime doesn't qualify, especially when there are managers in suits and staff in uniforms to take care of just such.

Room Tip: All rooms are on the ground floor. You need to be sure to ask for one with a good view or you might...

Kings Cliff is a very cleanly maintained heritage property. We stayed in Macbeth room for two days & I would like to rate this as one of the best stay of my life, felt like living in early 19th century.
Food quality is awesome, though the choice is limited.
I heard a lot from other guests who checked in during the same time, there is farm stay called Destiny which is maintained by same group & is a must visit place.
3rd day we have shifted to Sherlock , which is maintained by same group < Little Earth> stay was very good & location was even better then a Kings Cliff. Still I will give full marks to Kings Cliff for its amazing food quality, friendly staff & accessibility to the city.

A star property with a homely touch. The services and attention of the entire staff headed by Mr Nazrul, the GM of the hotel is extremely homely and the extra care they took in ensuring our stay to be splendid. The property took us back to the Shakespearian days, while walking along the corridor between Tempest, Windsor and Midsummer. The food spread was awesome and gave a flavour of a 5 star property. It also gives a sensation of Lady Maybn while reading through the various heritage pictures of the walls, which talks of the history of the property, but well maintained.

Visit to the Tribal Museum in the outskirts of Ooty and meeting the knowledgeable watchmen is an experience of its own. Wax museum is also an amazing place to be in. One must visit and promote these two neglected places while in Ooty. It is just fantastic

Our experience was awesome with the heritage, food, ambeince, fire place and on top the warm friendly service of the entire crew. It is a vacation which our family will remember over the years and if we get back to OOTY again, it has to be KINGS CLIFF ONLY.

The wandering Ghost of Lady Maybn is just a rumour and please do not get carried away with the website of Kings Cliff.

Room Tip: Hamlet would be the picturesque room and Midsummer, Windsor or Tempest would give a heritage British...
