“Heritage train Ooty”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

from ooty to Coonor train is pulled by diesel loc, from Coonor onwards the steam engine comes into action, very little space for your legs in the carriages, try to book first class! Going down coming from ooty try to get a seat on the right hand site.

“A great experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

Locals described it as the 'toy train', but it's definitely a full-sized steam rack-and-pinion mountain railway! Wonderfully atmospheric, slow (which gives you all the more time to take in the views) and very well-used. We were 9 in our first-class compartment for 8, and other compartments looked even more crowded. In a way, the best bits were the several halts for the train to take on more water, when you could get out to stretch your legs, buy drinks and snacks, and take photos!

“SterlingViews at Ooty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

The mountain scenery and tea plantations. This is real India and not too touristy like the coast. Authentic indian shops and food. Reflected in prices which made it a good value for money place to visit. Be careful though where you eat - drink only sealed bottled water. Health & Safety and Hygiene do not appear to be one of India's priorities.

“Scenic Ride”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

It is advisable to book your tickets in advance, if not you may not get on the counter as the tickets are issued on first come first serve basis. You may have to go there an hour earlier, end up in long queues and may not get. We did not get our tickets in the morning as it was weekend and we had go back for the afternoon train.

The train journey is measured and takes you through the lush green tea gardens, picturesque locations and fantastic lookouts all in the beautiful hills of the Nilgiris.
You get unconquerable views during this journey depending on the weather.

An announcement of different locations and a halt in scenic spots would make the journey more enjoyable. Also the return journey timings from Coonoor are not convenient as the trains are either earlier or much later and forces one to return by taxi or bus.

“Not wow, but it is still #1 and must try”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013 via mobile

I enjoyed Nilgiri train ride on 19 March 2013. I booked fc tickets from mumbai for conviniance but belive me its no much diffrance between fc and sc or general. So feel free to book second but reservation. Geneal un reserved is also well managed by rly police by forming q to board so all well. Dont spend more on fc and try sc or general unreserved. Its osm experiance but rly should modify train to provide more view to passangers while maintaining its heart of steem engine. These days railway runs desial loco is also good. Overall its amezing experiance to try once.
