“A treasure we must save”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2012

This is the only heritage train and runs at the highest elevated place in Southern India. We left Mettupalayam at 7.30 AM and the train started traveling at a speed of not more than 12 KM/hour. This train covers a distance of 46Km in a five hours journey passing through Hilligrove, Coonoor, Wellington, Aravankadu, Keeti, Lovedale stations and finally ends at Udagamandalam or Ooty. Taking a ride of this Nilgiri Toy train is must. There are close to 16 tunnels and bridges on this scenic route. It is the steepest railway track in the whole of Asia. Alternate Biting system (ABT), also called the rack and pinion system, is used to overcome this steep ascent. It is similar to the fashion in which we climb a ladder. Here the engine pushes the train from behind during this uphill climb and is present in the front while going down from Ooty to Mettupalayam. Tickests can be booked in advance from www.irctc.co.in.
- 12671/Nilagiri Express (from Chennai Central to Mettupalaiyam) connects to this toy train.
- Try to book the first class. First class seats are much more comfortable than the second seating ones. First Class coach is in the front of the train. So it gives a full view of the scenic route as the engine is in the back of the train. There are onle 16 first class seats. Try to book atleast 2 months advance.
- There are no toilets in the train. But that was no problem for us as the train halted at Coonoor station for 40 minutes.
