I stayed in this hotel with my teenage son. This was some father-son bonding time so, as soon as he said 'WOW' when he stepped into the room, I had a good feeling about the place. The rooms remind you of simple cottages in North Scotland. The old and uneven dark wood flooring adds a lot of character to the room. The beds were comfortable and the amenities sufficient. This hotel has received awards for being an environmentally friendly hotel and it is evident in the fact that they don't place various cellophane wrapped toiletries and more than two towels. Since the housekeeping team is literally next door, any request (other than ordering in meals) doesn't more than 5 minutes. The service is excellent and very friendly.
As soon as we entered the reception, we were served Hot Toddy in shot glasses. Despite the receptacle and the name, this drink doesn't contain alcohol. It is made of hot water, honey, cloves, ginger and cinnamon and a bit of tea leaves for colour. We would come up with all sorts of excuses to go to the reception for a 'shot'. But we needn't have to because after a certain point they would ask us if we would like some hot toddy, as soon as we walked in.
Don't miss the 'fireplace administrator', Mr. Kassam. He has been there for over two decades and is a storehouse of stories about Ooty. The GM and the Front Officer Manager never once said no to anything. We loved the jute/cotton yoga mats that are placed in every room. I just had to have one and the Management, despite the fact that they don't sell one, made concessions for us and allowed me to buy one. The man who gets the luggage out of your car is the ever-smiling Prakash. Everyone at the Savoy was there just to put a smile on your face.
They have just one dining room and all meals are served here. The food was a welcome change from the usual 5 star monotony. The buffet was surprising every time we went in. Please don't miss the 'phulka station' for lunch and dinner. Ordering food in was not a good idea because it is expensive as well as takes about 45 minutes. So we always opted to go tot he dining room.
The Savoy is a good place to recuperate from whatever one needs recuperation from. One reviewer stayed there to recuperate from an extensive Indian travel. It is good for mental and emotional healing.
