“Good Location - Average Hotel - Pricey”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2013

I visited this hotel during a recent business trip. Madurai is a breathtaking place and has a mesh of lanes and bylanes crisscrossing like a circuit diagram. Royal Court is bang opposite the railway station and do no mistakes to ask an auto guy where is this. He will charge you 30 bucks and cross you over to the other side of the road. Royal Court is in the heart of the town and the temple is walkable and there are also transport in the form of cycle rikshaws and autos that ply at a minimum fare.

Please do not go there with an expectation of a resort like facility. The rooms are just about ok not spic n span neither dirty. The linens are little old. Most hotels in the city are like this, even if they give a bath tub inside the room you might not want to use it. Madurai is a place where you would want to spend time outside the room and not inside and thus the hotel truly encourages you to step out as the room is not very comfortable. The color combinations used for sanitaryware was quite unique 'olive green' and this color kind a hits you.

On the food and beverage section, this is a place where non-vegetarians would love to go in for a binge as every variety of delicacies are available in chettinad style. As the dining area is quite small and cramped considering seating there vegetarians would find the the aroma of the non-veg food around always and might not have a comfortable meal.

So what do you do in the hotel..... Just Get Out! Madurai is magical.

From lane full of Saree shops, exotic flowers aromas of freshly brewed coffee, fruit juices, idli dosa stalls on the road the whole fanfare leads to this magnificent temple dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi. The temple has been renovated about 2-3 years back and every tower of the temple is a marvel of artifact. You can spend hours gazing at these mammoth structure and step in to the wonderland. The temple complex is a mini city inside where you have a complete market inside the temple complex. The main diety is Goddess Meenaksi - Parvati and her consort Lord Sundareswara - Shiva. Make sure that you buy Rs.100 ticket otherwise you do not get to see anything. Photography is allowed in most parts of the temple so take your camera along. Dont miss the 3d Shivalingam on the ceiling of the temple (photo added) search for it ask for it you will not regret the effort. This picture of shivalingam is a 3D effect wherever you go it will face you - left, right, centre and you go to the other side of the corridor it will invert itself... How is is painted i still keep wondering.

Other attractions are Tirumalai Nayakan Mahal and a temple of Murugan in Tirupparankundram a short drive from Madurai.

Most of the city is best visited on foot, so set loose and get immersed in the city which never sleeps. We found the most amazing curd rice in a road side stall at 1.00 am. Gauri Ganga is a restaurant where you want to go forever. Idiyappam, Paniyaram and the list goes on. Dont miss filter coffee and Nannari Juice a local delicacy.

Room Tip: Please choose a room which doesnt face the railway station as the trains keep honking at any hour of...

I normally go to Madurai only for family functions and royal court is a family friendly hotel. The rooms and bathrooms are clean and the food that they serve is good (they now serve buffet lunch). Location also is good as it is within Madurai. There are now better & newer hotels in Madurai but they are outside the city. If primary objective is a nice place to stay (without luxury / ambience), then this is the right hotel for you.

we were well received at reception at late hours 11.30 night. After a tiresome journey from Thiruvananthapuram by train we were hungry as well as tired. Restaurant was closed but still arranged some quick food and served to room neatly. Toilet was indeed very much clean but bit stinking. Complimentary breakfast had a good variety and palatable. Lunch and dinner available on buffet but very very costly. However right opposite to railway station and walkable. Good local taxi arrangement provided to us. Overall good stay. Staff are friendly and obliging.

Room Tip: We stayed in 3rd floor room which was quite comfortable.

Stayed here for a night on 18th August with family, and was very happy with the service and the overall room. Was upgraded to an Executive suite right at the check-in as it seems, Superior rooms which I had opted for were not available. WiFi access worked like a charm, they were happy to get more than 2 devices connected. room quality was good. Very good food.

The only issue I faced in this short stay was, there were no one for the valet parking after 9pm and the hotel parking in the basement exits to a crowded back lane and then getting out from there is a nightmare.

Overall a Very good hotel and an equally good staff who are more than happy to go the extra mile to make you comfortable.

We stayed at the Royal Court for two nights, and were, well, is whelmed a word? We were neither under- or over-whelmed. On the plus side the bed was OK and the bathroom was fairly clean, on the minus side the wifi codes given out only seemed to last 20 minutes before we had to call reception to get another, the laundry ruined two of my wife's tops, and the blown double glazing (dead flies between the panes is such a giveaway!) meant it was incredibly noisy; the place is between two busy streets and across the street from the railway station. Fortunately, we always travel with earplugs. Breakfast was OK, but be warned, this hotel is dry; if you want beer, you go elsewhere! And don't think of buying a few bottles of Kingfisher at the offy across the road and putting them in the minibar; despite the original booking telling us there was a fridge in the room, there wasn't.

stayed in royal court on 12th and 13th of august. the hotel is located bang opposite to the railway station and the rooms are spacious. But somewhere felt not comfortable with the bed and the bathroom. After hard day work and travel, you always want to have a good sleep, which is lacking because of the hard bed. The bathroom has a foul smell and the shower is really slow and poor lighting. Average stay...
