5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2009

Located on a 60 acre property at an elevation, this is one of the best resorts we have stayed at. We stayed here for a day and we couldnt find fault with anything. The staff is excellent and extremely helpful. The rooms a right blend of character and modern amenities. From our room, we got a great view of the city. The resort is quite spread out with lot of trees and dense vegetation. There are some 60+ peacocks on the property. The food is outstanding and they were very accommodative with customizing the dishes for our kids. Highly recommended

This hotel situated on a hill-top give an aerial view of the entire city of Madurai.

The rooms are very comfortable.

The food is chanceless so tasty.

The event management and the arrangements are really wonderful.

The view from the open-air restruant will be amazing.

When our car started the slope in the dark, I could not guess how the hotel would look like. Then came the pleasant surprise. Typical colonial look, surrounded by trees with rain drops sliding from the roof and welcoming us.
As it was late night, we preferred to rest in our rooms directly. In the monrnig, when we came out for breakfast, there was little rain and we walked to the breakfast place which was little away through the garden. One can have the scenic view of surronding from the hilltop.
The hotel was truely a garden retreat!

Stayed here some years ago. Tried another hotel in town but memories of Taj Garden retreat were too good in comparison so called on the phone and booked for immediate check in- the most wonderful hotel we stayed in.
Quaint place, more like a bungalow in British Raj than a hotel, sprawling over several buildings and cottages, wonderful view of the temple and scenery around.on a little hillock in almost in middle of the town, gardens all around. Peacocks in the garden.

very polite, courteous and attentive staff, great food, delightful room. Would like to come back here and spend a few days just lolling around this delightful property while I would like to visit the 14 acre Madurai temple and see it again in detail and at leisure.

All this for a really reasonable price for a superior room was fantastic value for money. Pity we only spent a night here and rushed off to Tuticorin on work.

Taj Garden Retreat is a romatic location close to the backwaters and the Vembanand lake. The accomdation is available in cottages that are really nice and the total rustic experience. The service was good to however the rooms were not very well kept keeping to Taj standards. The place is wonderful and makes you feel rejuvinated.

A large, quite luxurious resort in its own extensive grounds on an isolated hill perched above Madurai and well away from the traffic noise and hassle of the city. We had a comfortable room with a good view over part of the city.

The dinner buffet, mainly local food, was pretty good, as was the a la carte lunch the day we arrived. On one evening we had a formal outdoor BBQ under the stars, which was very enjoyable if pricey.

Madurai is a facinating city which we included as a detour from our holiday which was otherwise confined to Kerala. We have not been anywhere else in India but from all accounts I suspect that this is more like the 'real' India, with all its noise and chaos, than Kerala which is relatively orderly and reminiscent of Malaysia. The temple is a wonder to behold. Do try to get to the evening puja ceremony.

We asked our local guide to send us somewhere 'local' for lunch, but ended up at the Regent Hotel. The food was fine, but another buffet, not much different from the Taj. I'm not sure if this was because there was nowhere else (or nowhere the guide was prepared to take foreigners), or because it was the best local offering. Whilst the Regent looked fine as a hotel, the Taj Garden Retreat is definitiely a level higher (metaphorically as well as physically) and is a great place to relax after the exertions of sightseeing.

In Kerala, we stayed mainly at CGH hotels, which were superb. We cannot fault the Taj Garden Retreat on any point, but somehow it doesn't have quite the charm of the CGH places. Perhaps it's because there are business guests and diners, which gives it a more urban and formal character. Still it's a very enjoyable place to stay.

I had a wonderful stay at the Taj in Madurai in March. The location of the hotel makes it a welcome retreat after a long day's sightseeing in the city and the grounds of the hotel are incredibly well maintained, and great if you enjoy bird-watching - I was amazed to see how many peacocks were parading around the gardens and pool area! The pool is an excellent size, and I would highly recommend the spa - I had one of the best massages of my trip here. I stayed in a deluxe room, the rooms was a good size and had all mod-cons needed. They also have a garden area which have wonderful views across to the Sri Meenakshi temple and the city.
Only thing that let the hotel down slightly was the food. The indian food was good but the continenal options were not brilliant. The hotel also has an a la carte restaurant - I ate here as it had a lovely atmosphere and a great way to experience Madurai by night though the food was a real disappointment.
