“Kurumba - affordable paradise to be enjoyed. Atleast once.”
KURUBA VILLAGE RESORT STAY EXPERIENCE
First things first:
The first time you see the resort you will appreciate the line, "In the lap of Nature". You should definitely go for it if you are a nature lover and seek peace from the monotony of daily life. Even for others, a weekend there is equivalent to ‘Refresh’ing your life. If you are living in city, this place is definitely a heaven for you – affordable yet out of the world experience. Make sure to book in advance, you may find the resort full for long time especially in the seasonal times.
The trip to Kurumba & Reception:
The resort is situated on the way to Ooty in the slope of the hills. And upto a certain point you will be using the public roadways. Then from nowhere you will see a beautiful mud road that the driver will take you on. This route is well known to them and you will start to understand the real efforts the people at Kurumba have taken to ensure your enjoyment from the start.
You are welcomed with a warm bouquet picked from their place, with traditional Indian formalities and a lovely welcome drink – made from nutmeg and other spices, fruits grown in the resort (we asked for the drink when we started back home – you won’t get this drink in every other place!)
We wanted to drop our bags in the room and start to the pool to have a quick energizing dip. But we ended up staying in the room for nearly half an hour taking in the details of ‘the Jacuzzi Suite’. Let me put the room details in the next part so that I can explain the other facilities.
The swimming pool: Take a look at the picture in their website and also the ones I have attached. The pool looks like it has protruded from the hill as the beautiful architecture is planned to use the breathtaking view of the landscape as its front. It may feel that the pool ends nowhere as they have cleverly left some length without the pool raised wall (with safe extension on the lower side which cannot be seen until you go to the edge). You can relax on the benches with some food or you can enjoy the view from within the pool itself.
The dining place is also done very thoughtfully, it looks like an open restaurant made of wood completely protruding from the slope of the mountain. (Even the salt & pepper containers, the food mat are all made of wood, bamboo to go in sync with the theme).
Trekking: If you are clever you will get up early not only to take in the view of mountains peeking out of the fog, but also for the trekking tour. Two tribal people will guide and take you safely for a real-trekking experience. One of them walks in front of you and the other behind you, they can smell elephant many meters away and in case you are lucky you may end up seeing some elephants and even, wood peckers, langurs, prey birds, etc. It is quite steep and you will start at 8.00 a.m. and return in couple of hours for your breakfast. We went to trekking with a lovely foreign couple, older than us by age but younger by stamina. The four of us had a great time taking snaps and enjoying the surrounding and speaking to the tribal guides.
We missed the spice-plantation tour as we were running short of time. I am sure to make it the next time we go to Kurumba.
Food: You get authentic food both Indian and Western. You not only get South Indian food varieties (Kerala, Tamil Nadu,.. recipes) but also North Indian cuisine and other famous dishes. When you are going as a group you will get an eight course meal with many varieties in both veg and non-veg. There is a lot to say about the food and the serving, buffet arrangement – check out some menu images I have uploaded. Apart from what you see in the menu, you have other standard items for example you have everything from Cereals to Toasts and also dosas made in front of you (Cheese dosa was one of my favorites). And every time you had fruits, ice cream, a special pudding, a unique payasam and some times cakes for your dessert. When I went with my husband, a 15-20 people group had come and we enjoyed the buffets thoroughly.
Sports center: You have table-tennis (ping pong), snooker, kids play area, foosball, etc. I personally enjoy tt and we had a great time in playing tt in such a place.
Every room in Kurumba is in fact a separate cottage. It is like a separate house that is on the slope of the hills. It is like, you draw a 45 degree line and make houses on it, similar to that the cottages are built on the slope of the hills. You need to see it to appreciate the architectural beauty. It is so with nature that you may sometimes fail to notice a beautiful fence on the pathway or a shrub of roses that was made/grown by man.
Kingsize bed: If you have arranged an anniversary/ honeymoon package, you will have your bed beautifully decorated with real flowers. It’s a four poster bed in the Suite and you will also find a cake for your celebrations. You have a hill side view from your bed as you have glass walls between the bedroom and the sit-out.
The Jacuzzi: You will be like OMG! The Jacuzzi is very huge and with many features including massager. The Jacuzzi is on a platform raised from the rest of the bathroom. I have spoken of the Jacuzzi so many times to so many people and I just want to say ‘Check out the pictures’.
Sit-out: Cane chairs, a long cane seater and a nice glass table is added to the sit out for you to enjoy your cup of tea with the view in the morning. Suit yourself!!
I am writing about the services at last as I want this be on the mind of the reader after completing this review. There are so many different people appointed for every single task, right from giving you a welcome bouquet to the tribals who take you for trekking, people who serve you, who clean your rooms, who launder, who cook, who take you for some sightseeing and driving,… You need to be there to actually see and experience the service instead of me simply putting it in mere words.
I am writing this review especially for another person in a city like Chennai or Delhi and to every other person who has a hectic minute by minute schedule. Kurumba will be an escape! Do give your comments too after you visit for others to benefit on the lap of Mother Nature from this paradise.
I have loaded some images. Check out the images at their site too www.kurumbavillageresort.com, http://www.natureresorts.in/kurumba/
